Transaction Monitoring System: FIRS Now Monitors All Online Banking Transactions by DiamondsAreFore(op): 2:33am On Aug 07, 2025
Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a real-time transaction monitoring portal aimed at tightening oversight of Value Added Tax (VAT) collections across the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

The new system, dubbed the Transaction Monitoring System, mandates integration from banks, fintechs, and payment service providers, granting the tax agency visibility into VAT-eligible electronic payments. While the portal does not directly collect taxes, it enables FIRS to assess taxpayer thresholds, reconcile invoices, and audit declarations against bank records.

“This system represents a transformative leap in transaction visibility,” said FIRS Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji. “By monitoring VAT-eligible activities in real time, we are fostering a fair and transparent digital marketplace for all stakeholders.”

The rollout follows recent legislation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration that empowers FIRS to automate tax processes. Although the new laws take effect in January 2026, the agency is leveraging existing provisions to begin implementation with a 30-day notice to taxpayers.

Financial institutions are required to register on the portal and integrate via APIs. Payment service providers must submit VAT data for each transaction, whether collected at checkout or calculated post-payment. Transactions above ₦5 million ($3,265) are prioritised, with encryption and AI-driven validation ensuring data integrity.

The move underscores Nigeria’s push to modernise tax administration and plug revenue leakages in a digital-first economy that has outpaced traditional compliance mechanisms.

It's not new and didn't start today. This is misleading.

FIRS has always had eyes on banking transactions since the PMB era but now incorporated into the new tax reform laws wink

Btw, EFCC, NFIU and some national intelligence agencies do too

It has been checkmated with technology just like with developments at the immigration which those officers don't so much have physical presence with travelers in which the extort you, beg you for money. This is a very welcome development and we should do our best to make it work.

Absolutely, all these crypto systems you are using were designed and built by individuals and no matter how much walls you think have been put in front to stop the regulatory institution from seeing what you do, they can.

China and Russia have proven that to be the case

A Portal should also be created for all citizens to see how the money generated from tax is use for betterment of the citizens. Additionally a system where citizens can stop executives from mismanagement of the Tax money should also be created, expecially where executives uses money generated from tax to send their children's to school or travelling abroad for holidays and hospital. We can be expert in creating systems to Tax citizens through banking transactions, agbero, all manners of revenue, but we can't be expert in creating systems how the citizens benefits from their Tax money. A security men the citizens contribute to their salary will mount road block to extort from the same citizens and the authority that suppose to stop the evil act will look the other way.

Tax Tax Tax and taxing mechanisms, that's the only major thing that Tinubu knows how to create.

How many available alternative revenue streams has he carved-out from the abundant mineral and natural resources on ground.

Many SMEs are crawling due to high cost overheads. But these clowns will rather continue to milk the poor more and more.

Yet, misappropriating the derived proceeds like drunkards. Shame.

Good! This is applicable everywhere. I remember my first year working abroad. On filling my returns, I was informed that I was owing the tax regulatory body a lot of money cause they had tracked my extra revenue from my side hustles via my account activities. All Nigerians must pay their taxes. No more anyhowness

That my brother is What WILL happen ! I know of a story where someone was allegedly owing over two billion Naira in taxes . He settled with about 200 million and paid government about 100 million . That settlement was allegedly at the top of FIRS management .
This is just one of several I have heard.
