Relocation Considerations: Sustainability And Quality Of Life In Lagos, Nigeria by Meerahbel(op): 1:29pm On Mar 13, 2025
From DM
Dear meerahbel

I am 36yrs & contemplating relocating from the UK to Nigeria and seeking advice on the viability of sustaining a comfortable lifestyle in Lagos, leveraging my investment income. My mutual funds generate approximately ₦5,000,000 every quarter. I am concerned about whether this amount will suffice to provide a decent standard of living for my family, comprising my wife and two children, in Lagos.

Will that be enough to make me live well in Lagos with my wife and 2 kids?

Can I also live happily in Nigeria without working and just using my investment funds to carry on with my wife and kids?.

I appreciate any guidance or advice from individuals with experience living in Lagos or similar environments.

Coming back to your country is a good idea, as their is another perspective country see japa syndrome now..alot of country now is doing away with foreigners, where the world is going to in few years time, everyone will go back to his country and bear his or her name..
Back to your topic, it's fine relocating to Lagos, but their are some questions you need to ask yourself,.aside from getting a nice place for your self and family, what investment are you looking at to sustain yourself and family?. Do you have ideas to integrate yourself back? How can you sustain your investment??. And lots more.

Live happily without working keh🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's house rent, fueling (car & gen) and utility bill (Band A) that will consume all those money in a month.
Nigeria economy is shabby and he should consider a lot of things too. He can still be managing UK because there is still hope there. while he invest in Nigeria wisely, he can now come back in his 50's he will then have something to back himself up, he just need to be investment wise. Uk system still work compare to Nigeria system
As for me I earn 250k and am trying to survive. You better stay back and live happily there. You can travel down to Nigeria for vacation though

It depends on the location in Lagos and your lifestyle.

You can budget this way:
1.Rent. #5m
3 Bedroom flat with agency & agreement. In Gbagada.

2.Equipment, Furniture & Fittings #5m

3.Monthly expenses #800k

It's a tight budget. But #2 is a one-off not yearly. Except replacement.
As for #1, you can go for 2 bedrooms (#3.5m).
As for #3, I suggest you buy foodstuff in bulk. Prices are not always stable, and they increase often.

However, they are cheaper states like Ibadan, Uyo, Asaba, Benin and Osun not Lagos because people are running away from Lagos.

With your 5m quarterly you can try and buy a little apartment for distress around 50/60m 🤔
If there is a way you can plan yourself towards that .
I can get it for you then when you relocate then you will live and dine in your own house with your family .
So I think if rent is not part of your burden then your life in Lagos has just started positively... 👍

First, why do you want to leave the UK? Is it an urgent situation?

Second, the UK economy and the Nigerian economy are two different things. You could move down here and experience shege because if your investment and salary are bringing in 5 million every quarter, then it's not possible for you to leave the comfortable life here.

Plus, in Lagos, the prices of things are really high, and the economy is very unpredictable. I would suggest you stay there with your kids and seek other opportunities.

Nigeria should never be your next option in whatever you do.

You make around 5,000,000 every quarter. Every quarter is about 90 days. The 5m divided by 90 days is around 55,000 per day, then over 1,600,000 per month.

55k is equivalent to some people's monthly pay in the same lagos.

I live in lagos, what I can say is that the money is more than enough to live with your family very comfortably in lagos. Just plan well and stock enough foodstuffs, then buy most things in bulk. This is what I do.

Lagos is not as expensive as people think. It is just about proper planning. People with less income live comfortably here. There's no way you'd be lacking any basic things of life in lagos with such income and good planning. Infact people with such income in lagos belong to the rich class.

Please, Nigeria has nothing to offer you.
you go think say na joke till you start battling network, light, police brutality. Whatever your reason for moving may be, don’t ever consider coming back to Nigeria. Even if you want to start a business, this useless government would find a way to make it crumble.

I'm begging you for the sake of your kids.

I honestly do not get it why people are scared to return to their own country. You do not have to live in Lagos if you have nor work or business in Lagos thereby reducing your expenses significantly.

Moving from the UK to a country where not a single one of the 774 LGAs can boast of any of the following
■ Clean water supply to homes
■ Robust sewage and water management system
■ Effective Waste management system
■ Good schools with world-standard educational and Skills training services
■ Internet connectivity in both homes and businesses
■ Electricity supply to homes and businesses(through building of dams, use of wind turbines, and better distribution services)
■ World Standard equipped Healthcare network
■ Sturdy road network complete
■ Passenger Rail system linking at least the major towns and cities
■ Network of Libraries with free access to members of the public to support learning
■ Better prison facilities and rehabilitation programs
■ Expansion of police-community programs to help capture crimes across all parts of the state.
■ Robust Gas transmission network for the direct piping of gas into homes. , etc.

You would probably need way more than what you are budgeting there unless you are trying to downgrade your life in the end. undecided

Not entirely a bad idea to relocate home.

Due to currency depreciation Nigeria is actually one of the cheapest countries to live in for expatriates or those who earn in foreign currency.

Your investment income in naira will keep rising as naira keeps depreciating.

To address your questions properly we need to know what kind of life you you wish to have in Nigeria.

With an annual income of 20m, i would advise you look outside Lagos, perhaps Abuja. Abuja is cleaner better planned, and the residents more civil in behavior therefore will give you a higher quality of life.

Relocating and can never live in Lagos. I don't know why people think lagos is the only state in Nigeria. At this moment, Lagos is way too congested

You will get a better standard of living in lome than in lagos. Look to other African countries. Lagos and standard of living shouldn't be in same sentence.
