MTN has had a Fibre broadband service for quite a while now but is now quickly expanding its coverage. I looked into it at the start of the year, and was happy to see them finally begin rollout in my estate months ago. Here's a rundown of all you need to know about the service. This post is not sponsored and is just my own personal experience. 1. Installation begins in my area around April 2025. Poles are installed, with the Fibre device mounted on poles. 2. After access point installation, I reach out to MTN customer service about joining the program. Also even go to the nearest MTN office to inquire. They are unhelpful and provide no information on when the service will become active in my locale. 3. I see them installing the poles around the area in May and take the contact of a salesman. We keep in touch and he promises to let me know when service begins. 4. In early June he tells me service has begun. I verify from a friend at the MTN office. I pay for it in late June. 25k. NIMC servers go down nationwide. All forms of registrations are put on hold as a result and I'm unable to have a profile created. Not MTN's fault. 5. NIMC servers are fixed in late July. On July 30th I receive my FN ID. The very next morning, Thursday July 31st, I get a call for installation. Installation is done but installation is done wrongly and the inept technician lacks the tools to troubleshoot. 6. Monday August 4 I receive a call from MTN for activation. But activation cannot be done because installation was done incorrectly. Issue is escalated. On Tuesday morning I'm visited by four MTN engineers who come to troubleshoot. They figure out what the issue is and team lead asks the installer to come and fix it. 7. Wednesday afternoon my installation is fixed. I call for activation and by ~7pm the service is active. Why do I outline the events? To give an idea of how MTN's customer service is. I was impressed. The only big issues I faced were: - NIMC servers - Bad installation initially (MTN does not provide their own installers, and this is actually outsourced) Now for the important details. 1. MTN's FibreX is a fiber connection. A cable goes from the access point on a pole in your street, into your house. That, of course, means it's susceptible to more infrastructural issues. Poles may fall due to wind or anything, and access points may fail like all electronics eventually do. On the flip side, it's also a more stable service since it's not directly tied to signal reception I believe. 2. Installation is free. I only paid 25k for the 50mbps plan. 3. Availability is currently limited. As at the time of posting this on August 8 2025, MTN's FibreX is only available in 14 states. Abuja, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Rivers. They are currently expanding, though. Two months ago it was only available in six states. It's also only available in select areas in these states. Typically the most high-brow areas where they're likely to have the most customers for a service like this. 4. You can confirm availability in your area using the MTN app. Just open FibreX, select new customer and plan you want, and all available locations are listed. It's not always up to date, though. My street hasn't been listed yet, for example. 5. There are currently five plans, defined by bandwidth. 20mbps - 15k monthly 50mbps - 25k monthly 100mbps - 50k monthly 150mbps - 60k monthly 300mbps - 100k monthly And on to more technical information. 1. My Fibre X router is a ZTE F670L. It's not a particularly great router by most accounts, but that can be expected considering the fact that it's free. It also gets the job done. 2. The ZTE F670L lacks any sort of battery or backup power. And runs off a 12v 1A power supply. Ideally you need a steady power supply, or a power bank with a 12v output. Thankfully I have one from an older MTN router I bought. You can theoretically also buy a USB to 12v barrel connector cable and use with a regular power bank, assuming the power bank supports 12v output anyway. 3. The router interface is solid. Has all the necessary features including security controls, firewall and DNS settings with filters and the rest. There is no data usage page, however, but that's not really necessary seeing as FibreX is unlimited. Regrettably, my router does not pair with any of the ZTElink apps. I'm not sure if that's down to the router itself or modifications by MTN. Either way, you're stuck with just the standard web interface. And on to speed. I'm on the 50mbps plan and Ookla's speed tests generally always give a dl of 47-55mbps, and ul of ~25mbps. Ergo, just as advertised. Idle ping is typically under 30ms. I've not had my speeds drop at all, even in peak usage periods around 5-9pm. I should point out, though, that I'm probably one of the few people on the service in my area at the moment. Not sure if that's a factor. So far I've been able to stream ~8GB 4K movie files off my RD service without any buffering. I'm happy with it. It's a significant upgrade on Airtel's 30k monthly 20mbps unlimited plan which I was using prior. Speed tests usually start off with dl speeds of up to ~150mbps before dropping to 50mbps as capped by my plan, so I believe anything up to the 60k for 150mbps plan should be fine. I'm not sure it can deliver 300mbps, though. As for range, I've had no issues anywhere in my reasonably large apartment even on the 5GHz network. Pictures attached below. |

Very interesting read. They also installed it in my estate around April this year. Although I have not subscribed yet. I will now |

HeavenlyBang:The upload speed is fantastic. This really makes sense |
| Re: MTN FibreX - Installation, Speed Tests, Availability, And All You Need To Know by HeavenlyBang(op): 8:26am On Aug 08, 2025 |
AfahaAbia:You should. For me, it was either this or spend 354k + 57k monthly on Starlink Mini. This makes a lot more sense for my use case. AfahaAbia:Yeah, it's solid. |

I have so many questions *Was the installation free?? *Where did they connect the wire from the pole to in your house cause from the look of the router, its not connected to it. *Has there been any "down time" or during your usage?.(by down time i mean no network for browsing) *Are you a heavy data user? *Could you drop a break down of the amount spent from the inquiry process to the finalized installation I go really appreciate boss |

Simplecity:1. Yes, installation was free. Only thing I did was provide a ladder and tell them where I wanted the router to be positioned in my apartment. 2. Attached is a picture of the fiber optic cable plugged into the router. The cable runs all the way to the pole outside my house. 3. Too early to tell since it's only been active for about 36 hours. No downtimes in that period, though. 4. I wouldn't say heavy. It's mostly just streaming. I'd say I use about ~250gb monthly or thereabouts. 5. I only paid 25k to MTN. I rented a ladder for 1500 during installation, and tipped both the salesman and the installer who corrected the installation. Both of those were of my own volition because they rendered good service. 25k is all anyone needs to pay.

Simplecity:The installation is free.. you just pay for subscription, and an agent contacts you for installation. The router is connected to the cable. The connection runs from a pole outside the house straight to the router. Personally I have been subscribed and connected for about two weeks now, haven't experienced any downtime so far, neither have I experienced any issue with speed. I have been having constant 50+ Mbps that I subscribed to without issues. Even when network is sluggish on my MTN SIM on my phone the FibreX has always been constantly blazing 🔥 I would consider myself a heavy data user, and yes, the FibreX is truly Unlimited. There is really no money that you are required to spend during inquiry or even installation. To find out if your area is Fibre ready, just go to the MTN website and enquire, although some recent locations they are yet to even update on their website. For my case even the customer service agent I spoke with online did not even know that the Fibre was already live in my estate. It was after I filled out the Fibre form on my website a fibre agent reached out to me via email and told me my area was live. So I just made payment for the 50Mbps plan, and like two days later I received a phone call, an agent came around and installed it for free. But as for enquiry, no money is involved, my advice to you is go to their website and just fill out the FibreX form, that is all you need to do. If your area is live you will be contacted, then you can go ahead and make payment. The only amount you will be required to pay is just subscription charge, everything else is free.

I have been hearing this good news lately, fibre optic cable drawn to your house. Unfortunately all the location I want it wasn't available on their list. |

nani667:Damn, Huawei typically makes pretty good network hardware. Either way, at least mine isn't some ZLT crap. |

It is very affordable, I will get it for my desk top computer and smart TV later this year. How many devices can it connect at the same time? |

| Re: MTN FibreX - Installation, Speed Tests, Availability, And All You Need To Know by nani667: 10:30am On Aug 08, 2025 |
HeavenlyBang:Yup.. router looks very solid, I am surprised the router isn't Wi-Fi 6 capable tho, their 5G broadband that I also use has Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, so I expected to get the same Wi-Fi 6 on this FibreX router. Doesn't really affect anything, solid experience so far. |
| Re: MTN FibreX - Installation, Speed Tests, Availability, And All You Need To Know by nani667: 10:38am On Aug 08, 2025 |
Bukola94:I remember seeing on their website that it should be able to take upto 60 devices. Although if you will be connecting a lot of devices you will need to subscribe to a faster plan. If it is just a few devices then the 50Mbps plan for 25K is more than okay. I have my smart TV, two PCs, and about five smartphones connected. And I haven't had any issues. The 50Mbps, which is about 7MBps, has been casually carrying the devices without issues. |

nani667:They're just trying to cut costs, which is understandable. Anyway, Wi-Fi 6 isn't a factor at 50mbps, you'll only notice it when using the network for ftp. |

Starlink is making telecom companies sit up. We’ve had MTN’s 5G modem for almost three years now. Till this time of typing, our location has never received a 5G signal. |

HeavenlyBang:Great review and pricing. This made me notice the poles on my street. My only concern is the range, if I and my neighbours combine to get this for the compound. |
| Re: MTN FibreX - Installation, Speed Tests, Availability, And All You Need To Know by HeavenlyBang(op): 12:42pm On Aug 08, 2025 |
Mykcool:Definitely can't cover an entire building of flats. You're better off just doing the 15k for 20mbps plan if budget is an issue. |

I currently use the MTN Fibre X service too Great service (50Mbps). Great price too, considering I was paying more on my MTN wireless broadband. Truly unlimited with no drop in speed during peak period. |

O boy this is bloody no cap. Been using it now for three months and it's the smoothest network device I've ever used. I used Airtel router for over a year before the mtn broadband and the broadband is not only cheaper, but more stable. Yes there has been downtimes about two or three times which normally do not take time. Overall, I give it 97%. 25k monthly and I even connect my neighbour upstairs join. |
