Kachikwu Warns of Political 'Fraud' in ADC, Accuses Atiku of Power Grab


Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, has warned about what he calls a "fraudulent" takeover of his party. In a news conference today, Kachikwu accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a group of veteran politicians of hijacking the ADC to advance Atiku's 2027 presidential ambitions, claiming they are using deceitful tactics to secure control.


Kachikwu said he has been proven right that Nigerian politics are still dominated by "region, religion, tribe, and tongue." He warned that former presidential hopefuls like Peter Obi are being "duped" by this coalition, which he alleges is a "one-man power grab."


"Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a man who claims affinity and friendship with the South, does not believe any southerner deserves to be President of Nigeria," Kachikwu stated, pointing to former Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan as witnesses to this "uncomfortable truth."


Kachikwu presented documents, including forged signatures, which were used to procure a court judgment from the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt. He claimed the signatures of some ADC state chairmen were forged and presented to the court as a settlement to clear legal issues around the party's leadership. "I have here copies of said judgment and international passport copies of the chairmen whose signatures were forged," he told reporters. He added that lawyers have sent petitions to law enforcement agencies.


The former presidential candidate also questioned the legitimacy of former Senate President David Mark's appointment as ADC chairman, calling it a "comical performance" and a "fraud being perpetrated in broad daylight." He pointed out that the former chairman, Ralph Nwosu, had no legal power to make such an appointment, and that Nwosu himself signed a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 29, 2025, as the party's national chairman.


Kachikwu went on to accuse Atiku and other northern elites of trying to weaken the South by spreading "deliberate falsehoods" against President Tinubu and other southern aspirants. He alleged they are using regional and religious divisions to "convince millions of poor Northerners that a southern President Tinubu hates them and is the cause of their poverty."
He claimed that Peter Obi has been told he will never get northern votes and should instead accept to be Atiku’s running mate. Kachikwu also alleged that former President Jonathan has been drafted into the race and is offering Obi the position of coordinating Minister of the Economy in exchange for his support.


While acknowledging that he is now championing the cause of a southern presidency—something he previously opposed—Kachikwu urged all Nigerians to resist Atiku and his group. "We must all come to equity with clean hands and sincerity of purpose,"


He said. "We don't burn our houses because we want to kill rats and cockroaches; sometimes we just need to make our houses clean so that rats and cockroaches leave on their own."
