LET'S MAKE SENSE OF THIS

Jan 2006 CPI = 67.4
Dec 2024 CPI* = 867.8

CPI means Consumer Price Index

Inflation rate between 2006 & 2024 is 1,187%

What is the purchasing power of ₦8,000 in 2006 today in 2024 [*before Rebasing inflation] = ₦102,939

This means ₦100,000 in your pocket today cannot buy what ₦8,000 bought in 2006.

So also is 100k in 2006 cannot buy what 8k can buy in 1987.

In1990, a 50kg bag of rice cost N350.

In 2006, a 50kg bag of rice in Nigeria cost ₦6,000.

In 2025,a 50kg bag of rice cost N70,000.
Let us do the maths.

6000 divided by 350 gives ~ 17.

70,000 divided by 6000 gives ~ 11.6= 12(approx)

Comparing the two with the space of 16 and 19 years,Tinubu has done better because price went up 17 times in 1990 (space of 16 years to 2006) even with the fraudulent Fuel Subsidy.

In 2025,with the removal of the fraudulent Fuel Subsidy, price only went up approximately,12 times (and things are still coming down exponentially, we pray)

Kudos to President Tinubu for having got the gut to make these hard decisions that brings prosperity to Nigerians soonest..

This is becoming very serious, in a space of 10 years , Nigeria's economy has been gutted by a single individual and his warped economic views

Next time you buy ₦200 groundnuts, take time to count them. They are not up to 40 seeds. grin

The issue with some of you is, you are not exposed to the reality around the globe.

The Kenya gen Z protest which was about the finance bill, 90% of the bill have been passed which makes the price of things to go up.

Have they also increased their wages and salary?

Those who are in the opposition are known not to know Jack about governance.

They should tell us in the last 5 years, which Africa. Countries have increased their minimum wage even upon their low purchasing power.

Their wailing and nagging is now becoming generational

The purchasing power is what gives Nigeria edge not just above other African countries but globally( Reasonably).

How much is the price of basic things anywhere compared to Nigeria?

Then read up consumer price index and basket of goods and services.

Minimum wage in most countries is calculated based on these realities.
How you hate your own kin and kit is bemusing to me. Staying obtuse and supporting a fallacy that Nigerians have it better now than ever is mind boggling.

What is the true value of our minimum wage? Compared to that of South Africa(which raised its minimwage this year)?

2006 is too far. Try just 10 or 11 years ago.
Compare the timeline of 2011 to 2015 and then 2015 to today.

These hateful people had no plans to rule. They just wanted to hijack power and rebranded their desperation as some kind of save Nigeria project while spewing out hateful ethnoreligious rhetoric.

I still can't believe how some Nigerians fell for all their gimmicks. Well there are consequences for being naive and that's what we have today.

Better luck next time Nigerians

Nearly 3 years in, currency devaluation and subsidy removal haven’t lowered prices. Interest rates at 30% crush retirees and the vulnerable, over 70% of Nigerians lack formal paychecks to cope.

The government’s silence on targeted relief deepens suffering, families struggle with basics, small businesses fail, and poverty worsens.

If OBJ did what his mates were doing with dollars, we'll not be where we are today. He and Atiku built their personal business while Dubai was building their metros, Dubai mall, burj khalifa and co.

Dubai Metro started construction 2006.
Cost: ≈ US $7.6 billion

Burj Khalifa started construction 2004.
Cost: ≈ US $1.5 billion

Dubai Mall started construction 2004.
Cost: ≈ US $1.2 billion

(Before you say maybe money no dey) Obasanjo government had committed approximately US $16 billion to electricity with nothing to show. You can guess where the money went.
It was the same period that they sold PHCN and NITEL. Please, don't tempt the truth.
Re: ₦100k In 2025 Cannot Buy What ₦8k Could Buy In 2006 - StatiSense by AngelSlay: 8:36am On Aug 09, 2025
Back in January 2006, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 67.4. By December 2024, it had jumped to 867.8 — that’s a whopping 1,187% rise in prices.

To put it in perspective: if you had ₦8,000 in 2006, you could buy the same goods and services that would now cost you about ₦102,939 in 2024. In other words, ₦100,000 today has roughly the same buying power as just ₦8,000 back then.

This isn’t just a statistic — it’s a wake-up call. The money in your pocket silently loses value over time when prices rise faster than your income. That’s why keeping cash idle is dangerous; it’s like leaving ice in the sun. Investing, saving in value-preserving assets, or creating extra income streams are not luxuries anymore — they’re survival strategies.

If you’re still thinking in “face value” instead of “real value,” inflation is already winning.
