Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to comments made by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who recently described former President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) strongest option for the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on his official X account on Friday, August 8, 2025, Olayinka criticized what he described as political inconsistency and ethnic bias within the PDP.

“Those who because of ethnicity worked against the reelection of Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 are now saying the same Jonathan is PDP’s best bet for 2027 Presidential Election,” he wrote.

His reaction comes shortly after Lamido, during an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, urged the PDP to make serious efforts to bring Jonathan back as its presidential candidate.

Lamido argued that Jonathan’s prior experience as a president, along with his understanding of governance and ability to collaborate across party lines, makes him the most viable option for the PDP heading into the next general election.

According to Lamido, any candidate presented by the PDP in 2027 would enjoy national support, but Jonathan’s leadership record gives him an edge.

He described the former president as someone who could unify both the party and the country, particularly in a politically tense environment.

Olayinka’s response, however, reignited memories of the 2015 presidential election, during which Jonathan, as the sitting president and PDP candidate, lost to late Muhammadu Buhari.

At the time, several influential figures within the PDP were accused of not fully supporting Jonathan’s campaign, with some allegedly opposing him on ethnic or regional grounds.

He's speaking the mind of Wike, methinks Wike will strongly be opposed to the idea of GEJ coming back. Some people brought up the idea of Obi retuning to PDP but the idea flew out if the window as quickly as it came. It seems GEJ stands a better chance but Wike will definitely have a say here.

No need to rewrite history. PDP imploded then because Jonathan reneged on a gentleman agreement that he had within his party. It's like Obi getting the ADC ticket now, winning the general election and then reneging on his promise to do only one term. Wike is in a dilemma with the prospect of GEJ joining the race as this clearly changes all permutations. The PDP (bar Wike) definitely needs him as a lifeline. This is a direct repercussion of Obi basing his candidacy on the promise of doing just a single term. Jonathan is known for taking advantage of circumstances but still he's eminently qualified to contest and he will take away most of the Northern and Southsouthern votes that Tinubu was hoping to get.

The problem of this party is that, they still have old minds thinking for them. APC has young vibrant strategist doing the work and feeding the old men who plays the card, but it’s glaring PDP and ADC still have old men thinking for them.

Nigerians are watching patiently as we look forward to 2027 poll.

GEJ can’t work for the same reason Atiku can’t work. They both damage the chances of politicians from their zones of becoming president or VP in 2031.

Northern governors are not backing Atiku because they want to be president in 2031. So also all those from SS defecting to APC is because they are lining themselves for Vo in 2031 and presidency in 2039. GEJ becoming president changes all of that to they won’t support him.

That said the best chance of beating Tinubu is GEJ. Certainly stronger than Atiku or Obi. But that’s assuming he is the only candidate I.e a 2 horse race. There is also a possibility that GEJ is thrown in as a spoiler to get Atiku elected. I guess this requires a bit more analysis.
