the law is sacred and does not change even if people don't obey it. What matters is that it can catch an unfortunate person once in a while. The rich can afford to hire the best lawyers and defend their case and tell you that money na water. You cant expect the same from the poor. what matters is that the law is sacred and sacrosanct. Like i said under Islamic law they are allowed to marry up to four women.

If you are legally married in Nigeria, you cannot marry another person unless you want to chop free beans in kirikiri but this law will only apply if you had a statutory aka court marriage (that “white wedding” covered by Oyibo law).

In Nigeria, we have 3 types of marriage:

1. Traditional Marriage: This is covered under African culture which encourages and allows polygamy. A man can marry as many wives as he likes but the wife can’t have more than one husband. The worst part is that the property of your husband will be shared according to native law which gives her nothing much because the native law sees the wife as a property to be shared and does not give her much power to inherit. Divorce is very easy in traditional marriage, it only requires sending the woman out and asking her family to refund the bride price you paid.

2. Islamic Marriage: You can marry up to 4 wives and divorce is very easy because the man can just say “I divorce you” 3 times. The property of the man will be shared under islamic law.

3. Statutory Marriage: This is covered by Oyibo law which demands 1 husband, 1 wife. Divorce is very difficult and you must go to court, follow strict process, and it is not cheap. The property of the husband will be shared according to oyibo rules.

AS a woman make sure that you demand for Statutory marriage with your husband because it protects your rights 100%. It’s harder for a man to just wake up and marry someone else. Your Peace of mind secured. It even protects you from the man's family and even your own children because the properties of your husband will be shared according to Oyibo law which gives you something huuuge and not according to native or islamic law. Before the man will be able to divorce you he must go to court and agree to give you half of his properties and also if he dies, the law requires that you will take half of his properties first even before the children will share whatever remains. Statutory marriage is the best for an educated woman in this modern world.

As a man, if you know you can mistakenly marry another woman or have side chick or give another woman belle outside your lawfully married wife please avoid statutory marriage before you enter prison. FOr you to marry another wife you must first dissolve the first marriage and be free to go into another marriage.
