The newly appointed Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) chairman, Engr. Abdullahi Ramat assumed office at the Abuja, noting he would checkmate the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) to comply with the market rules.

According to him, his era will not be business as usual.

His words: “We will set the ball rolling up to Nigerians and we know the problem they are facing so this time is not going to be a business as usual the distribution companies and the generation companies must do the right thing. This is my message to them.”


He said he would study the handover note from his predecessor, Engr. Sanusi Garba to learn more and commence work in earnest.


He however noted that he and his team cannot change the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) overnight.


Ramat said with the team work of the management of NERC there will be efficiency for improved energy supply.


He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing them to serve in the commission.

He said: “We thank Allah and we thank the President for giving us such a wonderful opportunity.

“And we come here to the new environments. So we are going to go through the document they have and everything.

“We will learn a lot then we set the ball rolling. I believe we cannot change things overnight.
“But if we join hands together I believe we are going to have more efficiency as to improve the Nigerian electricity supply industry.
“So we are going to do a lot because I believe there are a lot to do and there is a lot of work to do.”

I don't understand how this electricity works ooo. What's actually our generating capacity now? People always say we are generating around 5000 since the time of GEJ but the truth is that power has improved drastically. How come power supply has improved and we are still on the same 5000MW. Or am I missing something?

Which rule? Is it that customers are not supposed to buy transformers? Or is it the one that when the customers eventually get a transformer the Distribution company will one day come and take it claiming maintenance and repair and it will never be seen again. They should specify.

Because the distribution capacity is different from generation capacity and actual generation.
Our generation capacity is about 11k mw, our actual generation is around 5k, the distribution is dependent on the distribution capacity of the disco supplying our homes and offices, if they don't improve their facilities, they can't take the whole 5k generated, why you see improvement in your community is because the disco responsible is fixing the facility around you.
We have the Genco, TCN and Disco.
Genco generates then sell to govt through TCN (govt uses this to control price, that's where power subsidy comes in), TCN then sells to Disco at subsidized rate in order for the disco to supply to you. However, the disco sometimes don't fix faulty facilities or don't have the capacity to distribute all power coming to them, so they reject the supply, and govt still needs to pay the Genco.
Eg, you turned on your gen to power your house, your gen can take 4freezers at a go, but because you don't have anything to put in the freezer, you only turned on 1 to freeze your bottle water, you have no choice but to still pay for the fuel for the gen, and the gen capacity still remains the same but the actual generation when you reduce the load will drop
