Chetas81:You that have ideas why not set up the chocolate factories so that they start selling cocoa to you instead of exporting it. It is people like you that talk down on your country and glorify the Europeans as if they are gods. Why can't your European countries grow cocoa in their own countries? Nigeria will sure get there... |

aribisala0:We always celebrate mediocrity in this country ![]() Our focus should be converting those raw materials into finished goods, then export them. We cannot continue exporting only raw materials, countries don develop that way. |

Gerrard59:Now in my hometown in Osun state, the cocoa farmers are daring yahoo boys to compete with them because yahoo boys don do them shege in the past sleeping with their wives. 1 ton sold for close to 10m, which means a 100kg bag sold for 1m |

Gerrard59:Funny enough, most of the cocoa farms were already dying due to low patronage and market because most younger generation were not interested in it anymore. Infact, some farmers were uprooting cocoa trees to plant cashew, palm oil and rubber trees but I guess many will run back into the business now. My grandfather who died 5 years ago had 100's of cocoa farm and was even far richer than his children in cities doing civil servant jobs yet, no one deem it fit to go back to run the farms in Osun and ondo |

emmaodet:Thanks for the correction. If I am to correct it now, anti spam bot would block me. Cocoa beat crypto as the best performing internationally traded commodity in 2024. The menace of yahoo yahoo boys is disheartening, coupled with their so-called diabolical practices. I am very glad that a legitimate means of earning really good money (in USD) is available and in the hinterlands. Only oil workers, tech remote workers and investment bankers can compete with cocoa merchants. The bad thing about yahoo yahoo is that those boys have mentally subjected themselves to believing in earning money via illegal means. They have lost the patience for delayed gratification. This is why policymakers elsewhere ensure a large proportion of young men don't engage in illegal activities to earn money. They find it hard to change their paths. Yahoo yahoo is a bad thing for our society. |

Cocoa plenty like that? Crude oil is understandable because it takes little or nothing to produce. Cocoa takes a considerable length of time to be economically feasible. |

emmaodet:Interesting. The diseases and weather really affected Ivorian and Ghanaian farmers. Our farmers, those in Liberia and Cameroon, are the major beneficiaries. Unlike in Ivory Coast and Ghana, there is no price regulation for cocoa in the other trio. The free market wins. The increased prices have jolted Brazil, Peru and even Papua New Guinea to cultivate more cocoa so they can harvest and export. And yes, up until now, our total annual tonnes per annum have been reducing. Na small we take gap Cameroon. My fear is Brazil - those guys are very good at agriculture. If they surpass us, Ivoriens and Ghanaians should be afraid. If the Chinese and later Indians can adopt chocolates like the Europeans, hopefully, the price will remain high enough. May climate change continue to affect cocoa plantations elsewhere. When I saw the increased prices earlier this year and even read a prominent French banker's analysis, I went to church the following Sunday and told the pastor, "Cocoa prices have shot up this year and last year. Pastor, you Yoruba people have made a sheet load of money". The pastor smiled. ![]() Farming is good. Our farmers need security, and our big boys need to go into processing and exporting. No be every time land banking and real estate wey no get pedestrian walkways. 🙄 |

seunowa:However, experts have said the changes are not primarily triggered by increased production in Nigeria but rather by the naira devaluation, which has fuelled more exports of the product by farmers and traders. Although there are cocoa processing companies in Nigeria that transform cocoa into finished products like chocolate, many farmers and traders now prefer to export the product so as to earn more from foreign exchange. |

DeLaRue:The government official probably meant to say Cross River State. That state is the largest Cocoa producer in that region and it has the second largest landmass after Oyo State in Southern Nigeria hence Cross River State is a major agricultural belt. |

aribisala0:You are absolutely right on this, we shouldn't just be exporting raw materials but also add value to it to gain more Forex. Texas alone has about 33 oil refineries! but in Nigeria we can't manage just four refineries. |
