Nope, I was careful not to eat any heavy meals, only light street foods as Ibtried to sample almost everything.
Eating roadside abacha is risky, but it's worth the risk.
Some of those women have a special touch to how they make theirs, compared to homemade ones.

Naturally, people don't know what they have until they lose it. I was speaking with a client in Ghana and heard a cock crowing in the background, you need to see how envious I felt.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha grin

Honestly!
Like when I was in the village, and I'd wake up to the sound of cool breeze blowing on plants, swaying them side to side, right outside the window. I savoured every moment.
Such tranquility.
That alone can increase one's life span.

You are totally right but for a FB order, its a rip off considering that I had orderd a better dish for $30 bucks off of FB market.
But do you have an idea of the rate of turnover for the area? If it is low and she needs source the materials in piece meals as orders are made, then it might be the reason for the high price. I would suggest you engage her and bargain for a price you think is fair.

Nope, you have to physically pick up these foods so chances of fake food actually slim here.
Indeed, you have a point there.

That's the real meat or thrust of the thread topic. I want to believe that a significant number of the ingredients used to make the cuisine can be gotten locally in the United States, or alternatively from Latin-American as and/or Caribbean countries (since they grow tropical food crops and cash crops just like in tropical Africa and Asia) and NOT shipped directly from Africa, so, the FB marketplace retail price shouldn't be that high.

Some people just fix high prices for their products subjectively and hence put potential clients off. Some of us among the Diasporan folks can afford to spend that 60 USD from time to time BUT the thought of being ripped of can indeed be off-putting for some.

I ship sweet delicious smoked Oven Dried CatFish to an African store in UK.

They buy it at 19,000. That like 9 pounds. For 1 kg.

The African store buys it so cheap from me.

Then I discovered how much they sell 1kg of the Oven Dried catfish to UK people.

They sell for 27 pounds to UK people.

African foodstuffs are so expensive abroad.

It's best you buy the foodstuffs directly from Nigeria.

The woman that owns African store is making good money from the business.

And she told me she sells it from her house.

She also said people are always buying especially Nigerians and Ghanaians.

UK people. I hail una.
That's indeed what some Diasporan folks are starting to do or they ask relatives on the Continent to package and ship these items to them. Asian stores too could be a better option depending on where you live.

This thread is quite insightful. LARGELY brilliant responses too.

Def on the high side,I used to get something better than this for $30. There are other sellers on fb market for half that price.

Those selling at higher mark up prices on FB marketplace will learn some punishing lessons when those of us the internet-savvy buyers (who engage in online comparison shopping) totally ignore or weed them out. The Internet ecosystem can be ruthless for those who don't adapt to the current trends in the retail space.

Out of curiosity, I look forward to tasting "Abacha" and even the other dish called "Nsukka Okpa" down the road (I've read and heard about both from some food YouTubers and on this discussion forum within the last 10 years).

I thoroughly enjoyed the deep insights on this thread topic!

Cheers.

If 60 USD is not chicken change in USA, then now I understand why a lot of people in Nigeria are richer than a lot of people in Diaspora. Like me that have an equivalent of over 200,000 USD in Nigeria, why then should people living in Canada and USA not have far much more than that?

If you are in Houston, go to the local H.E.B. supermarket and for $60 you will find ingredients to feed you for a week. Not richly, but you wont starve. However, if you want to go to an eatery because you can't cook, it is your problem.

No it is not worth it. This is pure criminality. That's not even worth 20 dollars.

Who the heck told you this? 60 usd is NOT chicken change. In fact, you will do more with 60 usd in America than Nigeria. So stop saying what you have no clue about.
That person is ignorant, $60 can stock a fridge with groceries in the USA but I'm sure it wouldn't, here in Nigeria.

Is food that expensive in the USA?. Sixty dollars will feed you for more than a month in Nigeria if you cook

A crate of egg containing 30eggs is around $9CAD.
It's #5200 in Nigeria. It appears cheaper in Nigeria then.
How much is a kilo of rice where you are?
