FG Approves Establishment of 9 New Universities

The federal government has announced approval for the establishment of 9 new private universities in the country, ABUJAPRESS reports.

This came from a total of 79 active requests made by their promoters.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa announced the approval on Wednesday while briefing State House Journalists, after the Federal Executive Council FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The new universities include, Tazkiyah University, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Leadership University, Abuja, FCT, Jimoh Babalola University, Ilorin, Kwara State Bridget University Mbaise, Okirika-Nweke, Imo State and Greenland University, Jalingo, Taraba State.

Others are, JEFAP University, Suleja, Niger State, Azione Verde University, Amaigbo, Imo State, Unique Open University, Ojo, Lagos State and American Open University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Additionally, the FG also approved a seven year moratorium for the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions.

Alausa attributed the moratorium to none patronage of some of the previously approved institutions.

”We are doing this to further halt decays in tertiary institutions which may in future affect the quality of education and consequently cause unemployment of graduates from some of these institutions,” he said.

Establish more of skills acquisition centres across the country.. all the FG-owned Industrial development centres (IDC) rotting away in the 36 States can be transformed into modernized learning and skils acquisition centres for youths. This will reduce unemployment rate among the youths and help build skillful & employable youth population.

Establishing Universities here and there won't solve anything.. politicians should go outside and see the swarm of youths in Nigeria job hunting. It's usually a heart-wrenching sight most times.

Education should be balanced.. formal and skills acquisition.

You suspended establishment of federal universities only to be granting approval for establishing private ones. Certificate for highest bidder. Politicians now proliferating universities like they did to primary and secondary schools. No job to complement the number of graduates they turn out. The other day a graduate was lamenting how he spent over #10 million to graduate without a job. I just pity parents. Let your children learn a skill later, they will still be educated. Politicians have hijacked our educational system.

As long as they'll pass an additional rule that no politician pikin should school outside of the country...

I think that only affects creation of Federal Government owned universities or these ones have already been approved before the announcement.

All these degrees degree universities self!

Technical/practical education is more desirable for the country.

Why have they not approved Prof. James Adeche Momoh University, Igarra, Edo State? NUC delegations went for inspection earlier this year.

Tinubu being able to maintain a strike free academic calendar in our Universities is a great contribution to our Education sector apart from other achievements in the same sector by this administration.

If our Government owned Universities continue to enjoy strike free seasons and properly managed to attain sustainability and meritous. Private universities may start loosing their relevance.

When you know that 4 years course is 4 years course.

We require additional universities to bridge this educational divide. While India boasts over 5,000 universities, we have fewer than 500. We're making progress.

I hope the establishment of more private universities will make university education more affordable.
Hopefully, standards will not be compromised.

I thought they have been a new university for the next term 9 years I think I saw something like that how come again

the former ones should be given priority not adding new ones again.

More Universities lesser job opportunities for students when they graduate.... Is it that people can't invest in other areas to generate and take care of the unemployment mess in Nigeria?
