Bishop Oyedepo Rejects Hijab Use in Mission Schools, Warns Against ‘Harassment of the Church’

Founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, has openly opposed calls by some Muslim groups for female students in Christian mission schools to be allowed to wear the hijab.

Speaking during a church service, the renowned cleric described the demand as “overstepping boundaries,” likening it to “a tenant decreeing for the landlord.” He insisted that mission schools must maintain their founding principles and advised those pushing for hijab use to establish their own schools where such dress codes can be freely implemented. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

“Leave the schools for the owners. Go to your school; men and women can wear hijab there. Stop putting your finger in the eyes of others when they are not blind,” Oyedepo said.

The bishop warned against what he termed “harassment of the church in Nigeria,” stressing that “God is a consuming fire” and cautioning that such actions could attract divine judgment.

In his address, Oyedepo also prayed against societal vices such as ritual killings, kidnapping, and farmland destruction, asking for God’s judgment on those behind such crimes.

The hijab debate has been a recurring point of tension in states like Kwara, where Muslim groups have clashed with church authorities over dress codes in mission schools that predate state takeovers.

Oyedepo urged Christians to remain steadfast in defending their faith and to stand firm against policies or demands that undermine church values.

His 100% right, go and build your own school, dress as you wish and introduce doctrine that suits you. You can't take your religion to a school build with Christians money, where the school doctrine based on Christianity way. The problem start from the registration, if registration office accepts students base on their religions faith, the school wouldn't have encountered the problem.

In as much as I support his stance of refusing to accept whatever these islamic extremists tried to push down his throat, which one is it with threatening them with "God is a consuming fire".
Oga oyedepo, abegi, there's no God anywhere... And ye Islamic extremists too abegi carry your advocacy for wearing hijab elsewhere, in fact go build your institutions and force your beliefs and ideas on your students....

Hijab should have no place in modern world. Hijab is nothing but a piece of clothes, seeing some people equating it to chastetity is madness

Hmm In my country, we all love Jesus, we all love Mohammed, we are so religious, we pray on Sundays and Fridays , speak in tongues and shout Allahu-Akbar but we hate each other. We are a conglomeration of hypocrites.

1/10th of what Muslims can't take, they will be imposing it on others, that's why they make peace run away from universe today.

When Christians were busy building schools, they preoccupied building Islamic jihadists, now they littered everywhere with bandits, insurgents, and terrorists, having overwhelmed with that, they want to infiltrate Christians schools, to remove the little remaining peace.

Hypocrisy is when you show us pictures of the mother of Jesus wearing hijab as a mother figure for decency and chastity but you vehemently prevent same practice for your female students some of whom may be from muslim homes and are fundamentally protected by the constitution of the country to practice their religion anywhere in the country.

I don't know when a landlord now has a say in what I practice for my religion?

huh

Would you allow a traditionalist to wear a masquerade attire to an Islamic school, because the constitution allows him to practise his religion anywhere in the country?

Women like Mary wearing Hijab was a cultural thing for the Jews, since the days of Abraham.
In Christianity, wearing hijab is not an item of religion, "decency & chastity" or code of dressing for Christians.

If you are so emotionally tied to wearing hijab, there are many Govt, private & Islamic schools that allow that code of dressing.
You are not under any compulsion or obligation to attend a Christian Missions school, that was established & funded by the Church & Christians.

This hijab stuff is still a debate?
He's got a point here. If you want to use hijab so bad, why not go to school in Saudi - why mission's school??

Eye-opening? I am not his fan but frankly, all he said should be obvious even with closed eyes. It is common sense.

While I agree completely with the bishop on this point, he is not your father. That honor belongs to the man who sired you, or to the man who raised you.

” He insisted that mission schools must maintain their founding principles"... Isn't free education part of the "founding principles" of mission schools?.. Why is his university expensive?

God bless you, Sir! If your children must wear the hijab, then take them to a school that promotes such practices. As a Muslim, you cannot bring your child to a Christian missionary school and then try to dictate how you want your child to dress. If the hijab is that important to you, consider taking your child to Afghanistan or Iran!

Are they pushing to enforce hijab dressing on a missionary school??

What baffles me is that islamic schools abound everywhere, why going to cause problems for the peaceful missionary school??
Re: Bishop Oyedepo Rejects Hijab Use In Mission Schools, Warns Against Harassment by ZeemsPropeties: 1:16pm On Aug 14, 2025
I support this. There's a sect in the other religion that just wants to cause trouble for no reason. I remember a time when some parents were complaining in Ibadan about a school (Christian school) that banned the use of hijabs. When the people protesting were interviewed, they admitted that their wards don't even attend the school.
What they protest over is something they would never allow. No Muslim school in Nigeria will allow a female student attend the school without using the hijab, yet you want to tell the others how to run their own schools.
