Our dad died three months after celebrating his 86th birthday. Before then, I've been hearing that once you celebrate some aged people's birthday, then you want them to die.
Now, they want us to celebrate our mums 80th birthday. Don't know if I'm in or out yet.

I have seen this happen with 2 people, but as an insider, both had something in common.
They just recovered from an illness and their kids used the birthday to celebrate their recoveries. Then they relapsed as is normal with their age and died.

The main problem I see here is we wait for our parents to get old and weak before we start celebrating them. Some of us for genuine reasons like lack of funds. Some because it begins to dawn on us that they are getting old and would be gone soon. If you guys had been celebrating your dad's birthday from the 50th, he would have had 36 birthday celebrations before dying and it wouldn't be unusual to die after his 86th birthday party. I mean, he didn't die after the 70th, 80th, 82nd and even 85th. It is also not unusual to die at 86yrs. That is good age everywhere in the world I bieve.

Without these birthdays, many families won't have family picture. So if you are still young and starting a family, try to create memories and take pictures. There is a trend on TikTok of couples who have been together for years. You will see the foreign couples of 15,20,25yrs, they have pictures of every year. Nigerian couples would have 2025, the next slide 2020. Then 2018. When they die, they will tell us that they have been in love for over 4 decades, yet their pictures would be 4 with angry faces.

The only picture you see them standing together would be their wedding ceremony and that of their kids.

Celebrate her if u feel.. It doesn’t have to be something elaborate, just within you and your siblings so she can bless you all wholeheartedly...

We celebrated my mum's 90th bday. She wanted yellow gele/cap and we had a good celebration

She died at 91, heheheeeee
We still had a grand celebration of life for her.

Don't be afraid to celebrate your mom's birthday for any reason, what you should do is to always make sure that she gets adequate medical check up, always take the proper medication.

That age is rip for any person to die, nothing of such, if your mom is destined to reach 100, she will definitely reach it

My friend has been celebrating the birthday of her mum every year. He throws a lavish party and call friends and family from far and wide to celebrate with them.

Ori na ndu is the name of the celebration, but there are some villages in Igbo land that specifically celebrate 80 years

DOnt celebrate her birthday till she gets to 100, lets check something

Go ahead and celebrate the birthday if it's what you want but try not to make it too stressful for her

If it's an yearly celebration, then I see no reason why you should suddenly weave any superstitious meaning to this one. Unless this is the first birthday celebration you people would be organising for her.

Must you gather the whole world to Mark your mother's birthday? True happiness is not in oppressing others but in appreciating God for His mercy and as such bless the less privileged in your community.

Besides, I don't believe in your assertion about elderly people's birthday and death ☠️

My mom is 100 years and we are celebrating her birthday this coming December.

If your mother is interested in the celebration, go ahead, but if not, just give her the money you are about to spend, let her enjoy her life while alive jare.
