Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has passed away at the age of 70, News360 Nigeria reports.

The news was confirmed by movie executive and producer Seun Oloketuyi on Instagram on Friday, stating, “Popular actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning. Details soon.”

Chief Kanran was a household name in the Yoruba film industry, celebrated for his distinctive style, refined elegance, love for luxury, sharp humour, and commanding performances that captivated audiences on stage and screen for decades.

In a 2020 interview with Journalists, he spoke about his decision to step away from the movie industry.

He said, “I stepped aside from filmmaking because of some reasons. There is politics everywhere and different cliques as well, even in our profession."

"Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional, and that has made some people upset with me.”

He began his career on stage before transitioning to television and film, starring in numerous Yoruba stage productions and gaining recognition through a popular NTA drama series.

His fame expanded further with his roles in Yoruba movies.

Over the years, Chief Kanran appeared in notable films such as Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala.

He was widely admired for portraying authoritative characters, often playing kings, chiefs, or village elders.

As of now, the cause of his death has not been disclosed.

I heard or read somewhere that Chief Kanran was a son of Oba Adesoji Aderemi of Ile-ife. Was it true?

RIP sir,since when this man the lost is fortune his life never remains the same,I remember some years back when I had an encounters with him in Iwo Rd Ibadan.He was so annoyed with me cuz I called him out to people he was in public bus going to Ife that night.He got angry and started abusing me but bcuz he is an elderly man I just maintain my steeze and walked away.
