7 Clear Signs a POS Agent May Be Scamming You

1. They Don’t Provide a Printed Receipt

A legitimate POS transaction must come with a printed or digital receipt. If an agent refuses or claims “the machine didn’t print,” be cautious. Scammers use this trick to collect money without processing the transaction.

2. They Insist on Multiple Swipes

If your card is “declined” multiple times, yet money is debited from your account, this could be a scam. Always confirm via your bank app or USSD before allowing repeated swipes.

3. They Say “Transaction Failed,” But You Get Debited

Some fraudsters complete the transaction but claim it failed. They pocket the cash while you’re left to dispute with your bank.

Always check your bank notification immediately and don’t leave the POS terminal without confirming.

4. Unusual Charges

Standard POS charges in Nigeria are regulated (e.g., ₦100 for ₦5,000). If a POS agent demands extra fees or charges far more than expected, it’s a red flag.

5. They Use Multiple Machines or Personal Phones

Be cautious if an agent switches between machines or uses their phone to process your payment. They may be using cloned or unauthorized apps.

6. Agent Rushes or Distracts You During the Transaction

If the agent is rushing you, distracting you, or talking too much, it could be a tactic to make you less alert and prone to being cheated.

7. Their Business Location Looks Suspicious

If the POS outlet is in a hidden or shady corner with no visible sign or branding, be extra cautious. Many fraudsters operate mobile setups to avoid being traced.

Stay alert!!! There's so much sharp practises in the system. From government to banks, to a common POS operator at the corner of the street, so much financial malpractices.

Well everyone is a scammer... From being scam and graduating to a senior( President, Senator, Governor and etc) Animal kingdom is far better than here

Dont ever let them take your card out of your sight.

They pretend they are searching for network or plugging to charger.

Thereafter take a photo of your card

After a few days they wipe your account.

Do a thorough check and repost again

An agent can use multiple POS machines because of unstable network from the issuing bank. That doesn't mean every POS agent with multiple machines is a scammer

If they take your card and say they want to clean it and swipe it by the side of the machine... , Big risky red flag

1$4 can't be red flag cos we all know cost of printing paper, I cannot be printing paper that will be torn in my present or throw away I only print on demand.
It depend on the area you are and charges above 10,000 due apply you can't expect me to collect 200 naira for 10,000 and above

Just get Opay or moniepoint accout/card for you little transactions. Send only your expense for the day

Just hearing about N100 per N5000

Ive been paying N300 for 10k, N500 for 20k

I have ATM card I only uses at POS, you won't see any significant money in the account at most 50k at a time.

All these stem from bad economy and poor systems. There is no way banks should not be able to treat fraudulent transfers and reverse it. Nigeria is not really working, but we see everything in the eyes of politics.

I dont use ATM.. i do transfer from OPAY, So e bo concern me .. even customers are the biggest scammers
