Check out Dangote's Humble Beginning in this throwback picture. Young Nigerians please Learn how to start small and persevere and grow. Nigeria has too much wealth waiting for all to explore. Can you imagine if Dangote used his uncle's money gift to him to Japa. I also noticed that right from time, Dangote keeps supporting every president in power, without showing any interest in becoming the president himself; apart from being The President of Dangote Group.

What is humble about his beginning, someone from a wealthy background is what you call humble beginning? Secondly, the Nigeria of their time is not same Nigeria of today. So do not blame those japaing. Dangote never had a humble beginning, he started big, and got all the support from every angle including the government. So nothing humble about his beginning |

Dangote has always grown from wealth to wealth. He hails from a very wealthy background. You can only say that his business empire was not as deep and wide as it is today. |

Okoroawusa:There are lots and lots of young Nigerians having his kind of opportunity today... But misuse the opportunity. That write up asked a question. It said could you imagine what would have happened if Dangote used the money given to him by the uncle to Japa..? Of course he will still be a rich men... But I doubt if he would have been the RICHEST BLACK MAN ON EARTH today. |

kfasian:That's not humble beginning. He was already a Big Gun at this time. To afford a full page advert in a national newspaper is expensive! |

That was 1986, and this is 2025 (roughly 40 years ago). For those who think it is easy to start a business and hit it right away, tell them that even Dangote did not instantly become a big man in the game. He has been in the game for many years before he became the richest man in Nigeria, and then in Africa, and currently the richest black man in the world |

immortalcrown:Yeah, we all know that Dangote did come from a well-to-do background. However, you cannot deny his business acumen and evolution as a business man. He is totally in a different league. What stands him apart is his unique business perspective. While those jealous of him would attribute his success solely to political connection and/or monopoly, there is no doubt that he has a mentality that is not common in Africa. To your point, being the owner of the largest oil refinery in Africa and the richest black man in the world, many intelligent people would consider those things advertised in that newspaper to represent humble beginning. Humble beginning can sometimes be relative. |

Dangote never had any humble beginnings OP. He as a person may be humble but he has always been in money. The family he comes from have been in money since the 1800s. They were in money before Nigeria as an entity existed. Dangote's great grand father is the reason why the British created First bank(formerly British bank of West Africa) in Nigeria. He was that banks first ever customer. He brought 20 camels loaded with silver coins to the bank to deposit. Dangote's great-great grandfather, Abdullahi, was the wealthiest man in what is now called northern Nigeria. His son Alhassan, Dangote's great grand father, went on to become the richest man in British west Africa. His wife too was equally wealthy. The famous ground nut pyramids that Northern Nigeria was known for was the brain child of Alhassan Dangote. The man was that wealthy. He was the point man for all British businesses in what we now call Nigeria. The argument can be made that adjusted for inflation, Dangote himself is no where close to being as wealthy as his forebears. |

Seunpapa65:Going by where Dangote is today, some people would argue that to be humble beginnings. It is not everyone that would start life with no shoe. |

Which humble beginnings? His Grand father was one of the richest businessman in the North, if not the richest Dangote had no humble beginning, he was born into wealth, but took it to another level |
| Re: Check Out Dangote's Humble Beginning In This Throwback Picture by DoTheNeedful: 9:44pm On Aug 17, 2025 |
Dogalmighty17:There were other wealthy people during his grand-father's time who don't come close to him today. Many know he is from money, but he has a unique business mind. |

How many uncles do you have that have, and can lend the amount of money that Dangote's uncle gave to him. A family that has such a willing uncle, anybody that comes from there shouldn't be referred to as being from "humble background" ![]() |
| Re: Check Out Dangote's Humble Beginning In This Throwback Picture by Dogalmighty17: 10:12pm On Aug 17, 2025 |
DoTheNeedful:The reason why Dangote stood and still stands out in wealth is that the man is an avid consumer of knowledge and a hard worker. He studies about every business before he ventures into it. Till date Dangote wakes up before 5am to strategize and plan his day. Dangote reads books as if his life depends on them. He also has a unique sense of self preservation. He plays politics from the shadows. Few people know that in the first PDP national convention in Jos, Dangote flew in volumes of cash to support Obasanjo's candidacy. He did same for Yar'adua when he ran for president. Dangote does not openly support or antagonise any politician running for the presidency. He makes it a duty to befriend anyone who is the president. It has paid him massive dividends. At a time when dollar was exchanging for over 700 naira, Dangote was able to access dollars from the CBN at far less than 400 naira. This deal he struck with Buhari's permission, is the principal advantage behind his refinery today. He knows how to access the corridors of power. |

| Re: Check Out Dangote's Humble Beginning In This Throwback Picture by RightToReject(m): 10:46pm On Aug 17, 2025 |
Words might have failed the OP, but one irrefutable fact is that Dangote started with a definiteness of purpose, and that has helped him rise and remain on top. Kudos to him. Meanwhile, you too, whether or not you have a huge seed capital, can replicate what he has done and get closer to his enviable height or even surpass him. Never say never. In summary, definiteness of purpose and burning desire are the biggest assets you need to conquer your world. |
| Re: Check Out Dangote's Humble Beginning In This Throwback Picture by DoTheNeedful: 10:51pm On Aug 17, 2025 |
immortalcrown:How is relativism bad? It is unrealistic for everyone to start at the same point in this life. You have certain advantages over some other people in life too. Should that undermine any success you achieve in life in the eyes of people who are not as privileged as you? There were people with backgrounds similar to Dangote decades ago who are nowhere today. Dangote has done so well for himself. In my books, Dangote coming from money will not diminish it. His staying power is also to be admired. |

Dangote was only an opportunist and most people would do better if they had the opportunity he got. And that was no humble beginning, he had billions equivalent to today's value when he was still a boy. Also fact, he is one of the problem of this country. If you think he cares abt the country's welfare, then you must think Trump cares abt Ukraine. He only cares abt profits and position. |
