1. They Don’t Provide a Printed Receipt

A legitimate POS transaction must come with a printed or digital receipt. If an agent refuses or claims “the machine didn’t print,” be cautious. Scammers use this trick to collect money without processing the transaction.

4. Unusual Charges

Standard POS charges in Nigeria are regulated (e.g., ₦100 for ₦5,000). If a POS agent demands extra fees or charges far more than expected, it’s a red flag.

1$4 can't be red flag cos we all know cost of printing paper, I cannot be printing paper that will be torn in my present or throw away I only print on demand.
It depend on the area you are and charges above 10,000 due apply you can't expect me to collect 200 naira for 10,000 and above
For my area #200 for #5000. #300-#400 for #6k-#10k. I shock say Lagos POS ops are more reasonable

I preferred ATM until the day my card got stuck in the machine at one bank like that. When I went to complain the bank said they have shredded it. Heritage bank that time.

These POS operators are sometimes criminal in nature. Very educative piece. Thanks so much for sharing OP.
There is nothing educative about the article. All these are pure speculations. Most of the problems encountered from POS are results of poor data network. Mobile network operators, NIBBS and the banks. These have little to do with the POS Operators.

NekaG2233:
The rise of Point of Sale (POS) services in Nigeria has made cash transactions more convenient. But along with this convenience comes a growing problem, POS fraud. Many unsuspecting Nigerians lose money daily due to fraudulent POS agents who exploit loopholes in the system.

In this article, we’ll show you how to know if a POS agent is scamming you, how to spot the red flags, and most importantly, how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of POS scams in Nigeria.

Due to increased cash scarcity, poor banking infrastructure, and the convenience of mobile transactions, POS agents have become a lifeline for many. Unfortunately, this has opened the door to criminals posing as legitimate agents.

Fraudsters use tactics such as:

Fake transaction receipts
Unauthorized charges
Card cloning
Network excuse scams

Knowing the signs of POS fraud in Nigeria can save you from major financial loss.

7 Clear Signs a POS Agent May Be Scamming You

1. They Don’t Provide a Printed Receipt

A legitimate POS transaction must come with a printed or digital receipt. If an agent refuses or claims “the machine didn’t print,” be cautious. Scammers use this trick to collect money without processing the transaction.

2. They Insist on Multiple Swipes

If your card is “declined” multiple times, yet money is debited from your account, this could be a scam. Always confirm via your bank app or USSD before allowing repeated swipes.

3. They Say “Transaction Failed,” But You Get Debited

Some fraudsters complete the transaction but claim it failed. They pocket the cash while you’re left to dispute with your bank.

Always check your bank notification immediately and don’t leave the POS terminal without confirming.

4. Unusual Charges

Standard POS charges in Nigeria are regulated (e.g., ₦100 for ₦5,000). If a POS agent demands extra fees or charges far more than expected, it’s a red flag.

5. They Use Multiple Machines or Personal Phones

Be cautious if an agent switches between machines or uses their phone to process your payment. They may be using cloned or unauthorized apps.

6. Agent Rushes or Distracts You During the Transaction

If the agent is rushing you, distracting you, or talking too much, it could be a tactic to make you less alert and prone to being cheated.

7. Their Business Location Looks Suspicious

If the POS outlet is in a hidden or shady corner with no visible sign or branding, be extra cautious. Many fraudsters operate mobile setups to avoid being traced.

80% of what you listed here is pure rubbish. Transactions fail and it’s due to the bank’s network and not necessarily a result of the POS agent and not usually a scam.

Secondly, most POS agents buy the cash they give you when you go to make a withdrawal. How do you expect them to meet up while charging you 50 naira and printing out receipts for you too?.

People should be careful alright, but they should be more careful of scaremongers like you.

Most of your points are not valid.

This Op just dey cap rubbish.
Even though they don't print receipt for you, and it declined. Won't you ask for the receipt of the decline transaction.
The only valid point I spot is you letting your atm outta your site. Digital transactions receipt can be generated even after 500 years. So stop capping rubbish with your ewedu brain.

You dey mind the arindin, as if e wan chop the receipt.
I once run a POS shop, and once a customer transaction is declined and they were debited, I print out a receipt for them to contact their bank

U see what I talked about in the other thread...

Entitlement mentality of charges... U see how the senseless OP assumed ND quoted a 5000 transaction as supposed to be 100 naira..

Plz ask urself, what is the transactions charge for 5000 naira in the year 2019..?

Ok, pos ppl live outside Nigeria ND economy is never supposed to affect them .. all the bank new charges since 2019 should not affect them

Again he is putting unnecessary fear on customers ND the Mod allows this.. allowing a thread to label simple transactions woe scam, thereby causing panic in the business environment...

How can a decline mean he wants to scam u

How can not printing receipt means he want to scam u.. do u know how much is that receipt paper in the market..?.. u want 5k 100 ND u still want receipt...?

The OP ended up listing nonsense as points....

debiting for a failed transaction doesn't amount to fraud.
Re: POS Scam In Nigeria: How To Know If A POS Agent Is Scamming You by Jeje247: 12:38pm On Aug 18, 2025
What I do is to have a separate account for ATM/POS transactions.I only transfer money into that account when I'm sure I want to withdraw. Money goes in and out of the account in less than 10 minutes. Once the account balance is zero, scammer can't have anything to steal. Cloning the card is useless cos there's barely money in the account most times
Re: POS Scam In Nigeria: How To Know If A POS Agent Is Scamming You by emmykk(m): 2:12pm On Aug 18, 2025
I did this Pos business for two years and all the points given as how pos agent scam customers are all fake and lies.

When you are debited after awhile even after you are told that transaction failed,it is the fault of the banks involved at that time.either the bank of the customer or that of the POS agent.A reverse transactions can be done in the bank to correct that even ATM do debit and not give money.

There is no way A POS machine can be used to clone customer cards for further use, some customers loose guard their pins to their friends and when those friends use those details to do cardless transactions as any POS points it is now assumed it is pos agent that did that whereas is it lost of their pin.

A look at the other point given are not real, for you to be given the post machine all your details are need to start the business.

Hence you will not sacrifice you details for any sharp practices. The over charging is not a problem as you can ask them for their charges before transacting.

Disregard articles painting pos agents as scam.
.

Rather I have complete strategies that POS agents are scam if you as a POS agent is not wise

Those that scam pos agents are more than those pos agents scam. Pos operators are being scammed on daily basis. I'm saying it from experience.
Recently, I've concluded that most Nigerian youths are thieves, and they look for every opportunity to steal!

Most of those points listed are not red flag. Some POS vendors have many terminals because some machines reject some cards and pay others. It may also be the busy nature of the areas as the vendor may want to be serving two customers simultaneously. Most of them five the receipts because they consider it as waste not necessarily to scam a customer.
