indigenous234:In as much as I agree with your comment I put on bold to an extent, but you cannot still take away the below factors as the major source of mass poverty in Nigeria: Waiting for magic/miracle Blaming others Comfort zone Having too many dependents Early marriage Having too many kids Refusing to take some risks to break-even out of fear of failure Marrying for love Consecutive bad governments (President) Keeping the wrong friends |

Chief, a majority of Nigerians poverty is caused by bad government policies and not these things you listed below. A country of such large population and landmass like Nigeria has its only truly functional seaports in one state of the entire federation. How many of such retrogressive policies will I mention?. Do you know how many graduates are roaming the streets after up to 10yrs post grad without jobs? And you dare insinuate they’re lazy or not working hard or smart enough?. Do you know how many graduates that are driving buses/Keke or doing dispatch rides and earning less than 200k per month?. Nothing breeds poverty like government policies and we’ve had it worst since 2015. franchasng: |

indigenous234:I acknowledge the points you raised as very big factors in what has been responsible for increase in poverty among Nigerians. But those aside, how about those that have good jobs but refused to control the way and manner they produce children with the belief that God will take care of them? Birthing more than 2 kids is not ideal for average income earners in Nigeria of today. Couples should restrict their child bearing to just 2 whether boy or girl, they are all the same in our evolving world of today. Gone are the days of seeing a male child as a superior child just because of lineage continuation. Many guys got good job, started well and ended up marrying one zero ambition, lazy, zero talent, zero skill, zero dream girl in the name of mistaken love, and such marriage end up destroying all their hardwork and future prospect. Marriage is very critical to every man's future. Who you marry matters a lot. I am married and I am telling you this from experience. Many great guys doing well for themselves got slowed down and some sent back to square one by the woman they married. Don't waive laziness aside. There are lazy Nigerians, or haven't you heard about some Nigerians that traveled to western countries with opportunities and came back home in the name of the culture there is too different, who does that if not the rich? Examples abound all over the place so don't think there are no poor Nigerians that became poor out of their own laziness and zero ambition/push for success. Let me stop here for now |

I only watch my tv once or twice a month. There was a time I didn’t even put it on for 3 months. |

Chief, I acknowledge your point. However, I don’t think we have over 130million Nigerians that are multidimensionally poor today because they gave birth to more than 2 children or married someone under the excruciating burden of bad government policies like themselves. I’m not disputing the fact that indeed, some people are lazy but they’re just a tiny minority of the vast poor population of Nigeria.something like 1 in a thousand. I maintain that the primary cause of poverty in Nigeria is government policies. As a country, we all agree that we’re one good President away from becoming a developing country or at least getting the basics right. but, still somehow find a way to excuse the thieving and unpatriotic, inefficient government and elites. franchasng: |

Wealth comes from God. One can work all day and lose it all in a split second. Ask Job and Joe Kuhlman. |

franchasng:Honestly, I feel poverty in Nigeria is not just about all these. A big part of it is that people don’t have access to proper opportunities to grow their money. Take for example, many people are scared of investments because of all the scam stories. Meanwhile, there are legit platforms where you can co-own real estate with little money and actually earn steady returns. If more Nigerians had access to transparent systems like that, we’d see less poverty because people won’t just be depending on salary alone. |

Rexie59:Or rather, if Nigerians were honest enough so they collaborate amongst themselves while delaying gratification in order to become financially stable? Our people like quick quick money, that's why MMM and CBEX thrived. They want it now now whereas wealth takes time to build. |

Bearfruit:There is nothing like love. Even if there is, love cannot exist in a poor society. People who lack basic needs cannot love. It's not in them to love. Love cannot thrive in hunger. |

indigenous234:You made great points especially with reference to 2015. However, the majority of Nigerians whom you sympathise with vigorously campaigned and voted for Buhari in the same year. What do you say about that? In 2019, the same Nigerians voted for Buhari. The 2015 election had seemingly educated people who still maintain their obduracy to date campaigned and voted for Buhari. So why sympathise with such people? They knew what they wanted, and they got it. Seeing such a mentality amongst the majority, it behoves on others to adopt better practices aimed at avoiding poverty. Number one method is fewer children. Nothing beats having fewer children. Anyway, to solve the unemployment problem, we need a lot of good factory jobs. And yes, all other seaports have to function optimally for this to succeed. |

franchasng:A significant proportion of such men married women who have too many siblings and extended relatives. They married these women and as a result of cultural reasons and pressure from their wives, they took up the responsibility of providing for their wives' relatives/siblings. This is alongside sending money to their own immediate family members. Honestly, anytime I reason this arrangement, I wonder the benefit a married man, aside from politics, gets in Nigeria. |

Mosco100:... This kind of comment is particularly frustrating. China, a nation that does not identify with any religion, has outperformed us in every economic metric, while Nigeria, a country with a very religious populace, whether Christian or Muslim, is still relatively impoverished. I am confused, is it that we are worshipping the wrong God and the Chinese are doing the alternative. |

Chief, I agree with your take on fewer children but I generally don’t consider it as much a factor in the entrenchment of poverty in our country today as the retrogressive government policies. My point being, if you live in the Southern part or come from here, most families consist of majorly 2-3 children. Occasionally, you might see a 4-5 children Also, most couples practice child spacing, with the usual being 2 to 3 years gap and occasionally, you might find 5-10 years gap between siblings. So, I don’t generally consider Nigerians, especially Southern Nigerians as birthing too many children or the usual 2-4 children as a contributing factor for poverty in Southern Nigeria especially. In the North?, yes. I agree it is but not in the South. Secondly, if you don’t believe the 2015 elections was rigged, then I have a land to sell to you at Aso Rock. To the extent that a sitting president had to complain of external interference in the elections. Specifically, the Obama led government of The USA. Yes, some low IQ literate people voted the APC then but there’s no way they were in the majority. Gerrard59: |

As you grow older, you realise why our parents marriages that were majorly a product of matchmaking thrived and ours or marriages since the advent of Nollywood or internet in Nigeria built on love is failing. Honestly, you would have laid a path for your future early the earlier you realise this Gerrard59: |
