Nigerians can't take any more telecoms taxes please!
You don't know Nigerians. They will not only take more tax but they will come there to defend and justify it. We have lost our elastic limit. APC practically outlawed protest against bad government policies. Meanwhile APC protested almost monthly when they were opposition.

The average Nigerian have been mentally conditioned to take government abuse without limit especially southerners

Yes,I think we should add it because it will make things a little easier for the masses.

At least we should give kudos to them when they do our positive wishes and knock them when they are in the negative.

All courtesy of President Tinubu,no other Nigerian President dead or alive, has ever done all of these.

Apart from the hardship (we can see that it is easing slowly) which happened because of the fuel and FX subsidies removal,President Tinubu has given more than any Nigerian previous govts within 2 years and I believe, just like other sane Nigerians, that he will do more.
He will surely win easily in 2027 now.

Coupled with massive ongoing infrastructural development, these are what he has given Nigerians in just 2 years...

It doesn't make sense and this shouldn't be celebrated! He's removing tax after telecoms increased their tariffs...we all know what goes up in Nigeria hardly comes down! You make people go hungry on purpose, then you dangle a bowl of rice before them and allow them to take a spoon of rice when they are about to die of hunger!

What do you mean that it is basically the rich that will pay tax in nigeria now? Tinubu that is preparing to tax all cumulative transfers to accounts within a year over 800,000, irrespective of purpose for the transfers or the profit margins of the business. I am still waiting to see how that one will work.
Tax is legitimate and all nations of the world collect tax from their citizens.Tax is ordained by God in the Bible and the Quran.
If you don't pay tax, know that you are not an authentic human.
Nigerian tax is one of the worst in the world.
We don't pay tax in Nigeria and this is the reason Nigeria is poor because we rely solely on oil while our leaders are chronically corrupt.
We have seen that this govt is using our revenue (which has dwindled greatly) diligently, mind you that we can't rule out corruption because it has been there since the creation of Nigeria or even the world.Nobody in the world can completely erase corruption because it is a human trait but can be minimised especially with tech.
China just executed an official recently for corruption. It is in the news day before yesterday that an official of USA govt has been indicted for corruption.
Tinubu is doing a lot of infrastructures all over the nation.Massive ones that had never been done in Nigeria before.
They will surely need money and tax is one of them.
Nobody taxes like the developed nations and this is why they are rich and serious.
Out of 100 taxes paid in sane nations,Nigeria has never taxed up to 30.Their stupidity is their fixation on oil,oil and oil.

Same thing I noticed, I have had countless failed transactions on used and almost 7 naira is deducted . This must be the greatest scam of the century and most times I dont like opening my app for small transactions

oz4real83:
The USSD codes should be the worst fraud , alongside discos in Nigeria. Immediately you dial their codes, the N6.8 is deducted even when the transaction is not successful as it is most of the time embarassed. The poorer the network, the more the transaction fails, the more you have to redial, the more they deduct from you, even when the banks reversed the transaction, the USSD deductions remain embarassed

Don't blame the NCC it has been privatized, it no longer serves the interest of the public but that of its pay master corporations who are only interested in hiking telecom charges because they have a long-term goal of enslaving phone owners.

It is difficult to defend the indefensible. Those who are genuinely doing legitimate business in Nigeria understand that we already pay more “taxes” than almost anywhere else in the world. Instead of easing the burden on citizens, the Tinubu administration seems determined to bleed the people dry. This new so-called “income tax” on total bank deposits may well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Let me break down the reality of what Nigerians are already groaning under:

1. Import Duties

Nigeria is an import-dependent country. Import duties are charged on almost everything we consume—cars, rice, medicines, machinery, fuel, and more. Even locally produced goods that rely on imported materials are not spared; duties and levies still apply.

2. Value Added Tax (VAT)

We also pay VAT on virtually every good and service. The rate was increased from 5% to 7.5%, further tightening the squeeze on both businesses and consumers.

3. Taxes on Financial Transactions

Things became even more ridiculous when the government started taxing our bank transactions. Every transfer or deposit attracts charges. While typing this I transferred ₦100,000 from my Zenith Bank account to my PalmPay account. Zenith deducted ₦53.75 as NIP + VAT, while PalmPay deducted another ₦50 as the Electronic Transfer Levy. That’s ₦103.75 lost in a single transaction—without earning a single kobo in profit.

Now, imagine repeating such transactions multiple times a day, every day, as is common in business. The cumulative effect is massive losses for both individuals and enterprises.

4. Proposed Tax on Bank Balances

To make matters worse, the administration is now proposing a tax on all bank balances above ₦800,000 per year. It doesn’t matter whether the money represents profit or loss, or how it got there—the government just wants a cut. Which other country operates like this? In the U.S., for example, Donald Trump legally paid zero taxes for years despite transactions worth billions because he declared losses.

5. Unofficial Taxes
Beyond official levies, Nigerians face layers of unofficial “taxation” that government seems to tolerate. After buying land and paying all the official charges, you are still compelled to “settle” "omoniles" before you can build.

All markets in Lagos pay levies to Iya Oloja, bales and other unofficial institutions disguised as traditional obligations.

If you run a transport business, after paying official vehicle taxes, you must still pay agberos, police, unions, and local government touts at almost every turn. These are extortions disguised as taxes, and they cripple small businesses daily.

The Religious Justification Fallacy

I find it disturbing when people use religion to justify exploitative governance. The Bible never ordained taxes. When asked about paying tax, Jesus simply said: *“Give unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”* That statement does not equate to Jesus supporting taxation. It was simply a reminder that spiritual obligations and civil obligations are separate.

A Tool of Oppression

These oppressive taxes mirror the tactics of colonizers. The British taxed the Aba people so heavily that women rose up in the historic Aba Women’s Riot. It was taxes on imported tea that sparked the American Revolution, ultimately ending British rule in the U.S.

Yet here we are, in 2025, facing a government that has chosen to weaponize taxation against its own people. Defending such a regime is not patriotism—it is patronizing oppression.

They want to tax your income and then tax every other thing you use your already taxed income to buy!

Income tax, then tax transfers you make even to your alternate accounts. Then tax what you consume, then they planned to tax your calls.

Then they take all these taxes and pay themselves higher wages, longer convoys, execute ridiculous contracts which they get kick backs from neglecting public infrastructure like roads, schools, hospitals , electricity, water
Then you use your taxed income to repair your cars from the damage caused by the bad roads or buy a car (which they are heavily taxing) because there is no reliable public transport system in place, send your kids to private schools cos the public ones are useless, go to private hospitals and generate your own electricity and water and employ security guards cos the police are not policing due to poor funding

We will widen the tax net! Promises kept
By next year, many Nigerians would either die of frustration or take their chances and go on another '#ENDSARS kind of protest (no matter how many lives it would take) that would reset this country on a better path forever.

These politicians take these decisions because they know they always have those they can pay to support every of their wicked actions or better still, throw in some ethnic propaganda through their lackeys to silence Nigerians from complaining..

Next year will be tough for politicians, they should continue making bitter laws to tax the blood of Nigerians. Good luck to them.
