Troops of the 63 Brigade/Sector 1 Joint Task Force Operation Delta Safe have successfully neutralised three suspected kidnappers and rescued a woman held captive in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The operation was confirmed in a statement released on Monday, August 18, 2025, by Captain Iliyasu Bawa Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, Asaba.

Intelligence-Led Operation

According to the Army, the rescue mission was launched following credible intelligence reports about kidnappers operating around Issele Uku. The gang had reportedly collected ransom from victims’ families, prompting troops to intensify their pursuit.

Acting on the intelligence, troops, in collaboration with a tracker team from the Delta State Government House in Asaba, stormed the kidnappers’ hideout in Otulo Forest. A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting about 30 minutes, during which three of the criminals were neutralised.

Items Recovered

The Army disclosed that troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, 52 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a cutlass, four mobile phones, a power bank, a phone charger, a pack of Benson cigarettes, and ₦2.3 million in ransom money abandoned by the kidnappers.

However, the operation was not without casualties. One soldier sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the rescued woman suffered injuries inflicted by the kidnappers before her release. Both have since been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, and are said to be in stable condition.

The remains of the neutralised kidnappers were handed over to the Keystone Police Station in Ogwashi-Uku for further investigation and necessary action.

Another Rescue Mission in Ethiope West

In a related development, troops of the 63 Brigade, working with Operation Delta Sweep, responded to a distress call about a kidnapping incident at Ekrodo-Jesse community, Ethiope West LGA, on August 17, 2025.

On arrival, the kidnappers abandoned their victim and fled into a nearby forest. Troops pursued the suspects for about six kilometres but made no direct contact. A subsequent cordon-and-search operation led to the discovery of an abandoned dane gun.

The victim, identified as Saviour Okiemute, 25, was safely rescued and reunited with his family.

Army Reaffirms Commitment to Security

Brigadier General M.A. Shonibare, Commander of the 63 Brigade and Sector 1 Joint Task Force Operation Delta Safe, commended the troops for their bravery. He assured residents that the Army remains committed to intensifying operations against criminal networks across Delta State.

He further urged communities to continue providing timely intelligence to aid the fight against kidnapping and other security threats.

This is the type of news many Nigerian wants to be hearing. I commend the army for this feat achieve in Delta.

I'm urging the same army personnel serving in the Northern parts to emulate their counterpart serving in the southern Nigeria.

I truly support State police with the rising insecurity. Yes, there's a bad side but we cannot ignore the upside of tackling this insecurity using them.

Very true. But how do you catch people that buy NIN and already registered sim cards?

I heard that some of them go as far as using other people's phone to make their ransom demands, even going to another state to make the calls and then immediately board a plane to fly back to the state their hideout is.

It's crazy man. Government would have to block a whole lot of loopholes to neutralize kidnapping.

Kudos to the military, but cant there be a better way of arressting them without bloodshed

Some of these guys surreptitiously live amongst us but we don't know until they're caught. Some people will never see anything good in good news even when it is glaring to their faces. If the govt didn't help..na wahala..now they have helped the victims yet you're not happy with that. What do you really want gangan?
The nation is in chaos today because most people in Nigeria are fraudulent and can do anything to have money. Artisans defraud people, people cheat in exams, there's politics in the church, market people cannot be trusted, civil servants embezzle public funds and alter receipts, just keep naming it. With all these in place, how can we have good leaders?
Let's stop deceiving ourselves. It will keep getting worse unless a miracle happens.

We are a people of the South South region of Nigeria with minority immigrants of Igbo origin.

Just as you can never claim Kano State because of the I g b o population in the Sabo market area, also, you cannot claim our Delta.

Delta is for the Ijaw and Ikwere. Go and rest.

At least, there's improvement but why did you conveniently forget about Kwara South where Fulanis have chased thousands of Yorubas out of their ancestral lands forcing them to be refugees all over the South West ? Now I know where your pains come from. I have summarised the truth for you. I should have put that "miracle" in quotes for you to understand what I meant. FYI, I haven't voted any politician before so I am free from whatever sling of accusations you're throwing at people. I have not seen a capable candidate yet and I'm not going to waste my time and energy to queue out there.
My point is, when you see something good, appreciate and celebrate it. Don't let sentiments defraud you of the truth.
