In Japan, an unusual situation unfolded when the toll system malfunctioned for 38 hours, allowing drivers to pass toll booths without paying. But instead of exploiting the glitch, people demonstrated remarkable honesty and responsibility.

It’s not always easy to get people to pay for something after they’ve already extracted the benefits from it and returned home, Authorities later asked drivers to settle their tolls online, and more than 24,000 individuals voluntarily did so, despite having the chance to avoid payment. This collective act of integrity highlighted the deeply rooted values of trust and accountability in Japanese society.

The incident not only showcased the efficiency of the system but also reflected the strength of the people’s character. Choosing to fulfill obligations without enforcement is a powerful reminder that honesty matters and that doing the right thing often comes from within.

This mindset of integrity in Nigeria will make Nigeria great

It starts with enforcing the law. People will start obeying for fear of punishment. After a generation has passed that down to another, the next generation starts doing it because they were told to. The subsequent generations will then continue because it’s the acceptable culture.

First we need to format the current mindset, then install a new mindset.

Naija we see everything like opportunity to make money.

Even the president will not pay back. You can't have a dishonest head and expect the body to be honest

Sincerely speaking. My dad's first exploration around the world for international business was Japan. I also have first hand knowledge about that noble country, the very reason why I call Japan my first love is because of their deep rooted culture that reflects integrity based on conscience not based on conventional religion, not emphatically based on law enforcement but a cultural heritage moulded by values taught straight up from home, and emulation of societal collective character.

One of my dad's experience about Japanese integrity was in the early 80s. He had boarded a train but forgot something of value in the train after he had dropped. The train authority traced him almost immediately and gave back to him his belongings. There are few stories of such gesture of honesty like my dad's experience too in Nigeria though, but but with Japan and Japanese, integrity, honest, respect is their DNA.

China doesn't come close at all when you talk about integrity and honesty.

I don't fancy most of these western countries. They are mostly a nuisance, yes from first hand experiences. My first love remains Japan.

Hahaha 🤣😂 this op thinks Japan plays grin

All those vehicles plate numbers have been captured by the CCTV cameras there as they were passing the malfunctioning tollbooth. God help you if you dodge paying the fee and they later start sending out operatives to track you or they kuku wait for you to do annual vehicle license renewal and they fine you heavily for your deception 😏

Never.

Nigeria that cannot conduct ordinary election. Let's have an election without vote buying and intimidation first.

Of course where/who did you think Lagos copied the technology of installing CCTV cameras on public infrastructure and roadways from? undecided

True, but i think it’s more than just law enforcement. When a people know their money is being used to develop their society and is not ending in the pockets of some politician or gov’t employee, they’d be more amenable to paying their own fair share even without prompting or being chased down for it!

If they capture the license plates, they’ll just send the bill to the person’s registered address and it’s the person’s responsibility to pay, else they could issue an arrest warrant or license suspension. It’s also the person’s responsibility to ensure their current address is up to date.

The it means this news is just mediocre and sensational then undecided

nothing new or out of the ordinary since it's something the Japanese cannot escape even if they wanted to be deceitful or not

Yes they do it out of fear of punishment. If it continues that way, 20 years later into the new generation when children watched what their parents did, they’ll continue in that line, 40 to 60 years later if it continues that way, it becomes part of the culture.

So according to my theory, start enforcing the law and hold law enforcement accountable.
Re: Can This Be Emulated In Nigeria by Belurved1(m): 5:21pm On Aug 20, 2025
Its not just about it's citizens been honest or loyal. If they fail to comply, they can still be traced and penalized by the government. So its 50-50, their government is loyal to them so they also played their part as good citizens.

If our government can be loyal to us, we can also reciprocate.

The number one reason it can't happen is our leaders , for one day, have not been accountable to themselves let alone the country.

The Japanese did that cos they are seeing value with the payment of those fees.

Go and watch Japanese fans after the Olympics, they stayed back to clean the stadium.

Has nothing to do with enforcement, its their culture of honesty and doing the right things.

Nigerians can never enforce this due to our tribalism

What they did was the result of decades of nurturing.

I can’t explain it simpler enough.

Don’t enforce the law in Japan and in 10 years, a quarter of the population will start disobeying the law knowing there’s no consequence.

Continue for another 10 years and half the population would’ve joined them. After 20 years, a generation will be born to parents who no longer obey the law.

Do that for another 20yrs and you’ll start heading towards Africa.

Stop equating what happens in Nigeria with ''AFRICA''.

How many countries in ''AFRICA'' have you visited or know anything about?

ZERO.

Mr ''AFRICA''.

I don’t disrespect people based on their low IQ level except when they argue carelessly and become disrespectful, but anyway think about this:

When someone says “the World Cup may be heading to America”, they probably mean Brazil or Argentina though there are many countries in the American continent (North and South America) like Mexico, Canada and the rest.

It happens because unlike you people, JAPAN still practices its Traditional Religion and Spirituality, which when you research it further, is AFRICAN spirituality transposed to Japan by Africans in ancient antiquity.

That is what SHINTOISM is. Go to JAPAN today. There are over 200,000 shrines. The govt funds the upkeep of over 100,000 of them.

When the average Japanese man is going to work in the morning, he stops at a nearby SHRINE to offer his short prayer to whatever deity is of that shrine. And then he moves on.

When a Japanese man buys a car, he takes it to a SHRINE where the traditional priest pours holy water on the car for blessings.

SHINTOISM is easily comparable to the Edo religion. They had an era in Japan known as the 'Edo Period', and hundreds of Japanese names are identical to Nigerian, showing ancient connections.

In OUR precolonial history, WE were known for our extreme honesty.

The Portuguese and Dutch visitors to 15th century Benin wrote that the city was rich and industrious, and that people built no doors to their houses because theft was unknown.

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2016/mar/18/story-of-cities-5-benin-city-edo-nigeria-mighty-medieval-capital-lost-without-trace

So THAT is our culture being practiced in Japan.

Our culture untouched by British christian and Arab muslim invaders.

When you people wake up from worshipping the gods of your invaders, and return to your African spirituality, what you are seeing in japan will be a regular thing here.

Why they are honest
