A Growing Moral Challenge Among Secondary School Girls

A disturbing incident recently occurred in a secondary school that calls for the urgent attention of parents and society at large.

A female student in SS2 committed an offense that led her teacher to discipline her. During the process, blood was unexpectedly seen dripping from her arm. She was taken to the principal’s office, where she was asked to remove her shirt.

To everyone’s shock, it was discovered that the bleeding came from an implant device lodged in her upper arm.

The implant, medically known as a contraceptive device, is designed to prevent pregnancy during sexual intercourse. Once inserted, it can remain in the body for up to three years.

Upon questioning, the student confessed that she was not the only one carrying the device. A school-wide investigation revealed that at least 40 female students were found with similar implants.

This raises critical questions:

What business does a girl under the age of 17 have with such a device?

How did these secondary school students gain access to it?

What is the role of medical practitioners inserting such devices into minors?

The implications are alarming. If left unchecked, this trend threatens the moral upbringing of children and the future of our society. Parents cannot afford to remain silent.

The Role of Parents and Society

Parents have a divine and moral duty to nurture, monitor, and guide their children. Failure to do so not only leads to societal decay but also carries accountability before God.
Equally concerning is the role of health workers who administer such implants to underage girls. By doing so, they indirectly promote immorality and compromise the values of the younger generation.

Way Forward
Parents must intensify close monitoring of their children, both at home and in school.
Open communication between parents and children on moral, religious, and social issues must be prioritized.
Community leaders, religious leaders, and schools should work together to restore discipline and moral guidance.
Where possible, girls who are of age and have responsible suitors should be encouraged to marry, as marriage helps curb immoral behavior.
What was once thought to be a challenge only among university students is now creeping into secondary schools. This calls for urgent action from parents, schools, health authorities, and society at large. The moral future of our children depends on the decisions we make today.

I'm so surprise that you are asking this question concerning the implant.

I have seen mothers taking there children to family planning clinic for implants that they don't want their children to become pregnant.

We were brought up in different ways, so don’t be surprised if those girls’ parents are actually the ones behind the implants of these contraceptive devices. In this country, there are many parents like that. If you walk through towns and streets, you’ll see parents who take their children to herbalists for “yahoo plus,” just to make quick money. You’ll also find parents openly supporting their daughters to go into hookups, encouraging them instead of guiding them.

It’s sad because it shows how broken some values have become. Instead of teaching discipline, hard work, and dignity, many parents now push their children toward shortcuts and dangerous lifestyles. This is why society is getting worse because the very foundation, the home, is already compromised.

It's always best to take your child to the clinic to have her placed on birth control as soon as she starts hanging around boys to avoid a situation whereby she ends up as a teen mom.

prevention is better than cure... Traditional parenting no longer works on these teenagers.

Is Implanon recommended for teenagers? Because birth control inserted into the upper arm is usually Implanon. It's a long-term BC drug and would require a parent's permission to insert it.

My only worry is long term side effects of Progestin. But I believe it's safer than BC pills.

For the morality of this choice, it is really up to each family and each daughter. Some children respond to talks and will make good choices, others can't (environment, character, peer pressure).

I understand parents wanting to take this route, better to avoid teen pregnancy. But I would think it would be targeted more towards at-risk teenagers (usually low-income girls).

Nope. I have a lot of consultants in my family, so I know about it. I personally am still thinking of Gardisil vaccine and talking and training about sex.x education, for my daughter (she's right now a low-risk tween).
Re: Contraceptive Implant: A Growing Moral Challenge Among Secondary School Girls by delugadou(m): 5:04pm On Aug 21, 2025
The matter should not end there. They should bring that nurse that did the implant and jail her for life.

If it's a hospital, it has to be demolished. This is tragic

That’s a really wise step. Preparing her early with the right knowledge and protection will make a huge difference as she grows. It’s admirable that you’re already thinking ahead for her wellbeing

1. A 17-year-old is quite old enough to make decisions on the contraceptive method of her choice. Children younger than that would require consent from their parents before getting such procedures done. And more importantly, I believe those procedures are legally accepted forms of contraception. undecided

Implications of what exactly? Children getting birth control should be normal by now. What I am more interested in is why you are not incensed by the fact that the so-called discipline from her teacher is likely the cause of the bleeding? undecided

What parents should no longer remain silent about is the assaulting of the minds and bodies of the children that have literally helped turn a whole nation into a nation of agberos/touts. undecided

. Jail her for what? Why not consult your laws before going on one of these emotional rants? The one who erred in this case is likely the teacher and the school administration for seeking to humiliate students for their choice of birth control. undecided

Would you rather have a teenage girl have teenage pregnancy and drop out of school or use contraceptive and go on with her life?

The problem of Africans is playing saints and holier than thou, it’s not a secret that many secondary school students engage in premarital sexual intercourse even those whose parents have been advising against it

Many of them end up with unwanted pregnancies and the society suffers for it

If giving them implants will save them, then let it be.

The implant messes up with their hormones and prevent them from ovulating (release egg) pregnancy only occurs if the female egg meets with the male sperm, so if the female doesn’t release her egg, the sperm will just be moving aimlessly in her body and cause no harm/pregnancy

It's better than unwanted pregnancy and shame to the family. I believe their parents are aware. It's not bad, it is measures to curb shameful early child bearing without proper marriage. My worries is prolonged sexual intercourse amongst them since they know that they won't get pregnant anytime soon.
