Remembering Tokunbo Ajayi (Newscaster) 25 Years After Her Death Today

Golden Oldies is remembering Nigeria's Foremost Newscasters Tokunbo Ajayi on her death today (August 18, 2000). Olatokunbo Ajayi was a seasoned broadcaster. Ebony black, graceful and elegant, she had a charismatic persona that seemed to attract people to her. And coupled with her good command of English, Tokunbo Ajayi was one of the best female newscasters of the 90s. She usually read the NTA (Nigeria Television Authority) News at 7pm and also paired with a male colleague to read the Network News at 9pm.

Tokunbo Ajayi story is quite tragic. Tokunbo Ajayi died in London, England on August 18, 2000. Tokunbo was 37 years old when she died. Armed robbers invaded her house at night. The matter was reported to the police. The police later caught the robbers and they confessed that they carried out the robbery and raped someone while they were in the house (the police were surprised because only the robbery was reported to them). Tokunboh Ajai was later found dead in her flat in London. Rip.

She committed suicide when she learned that the robbers confessed raping her. She never wanted the pubic to know. Someone as popular as herself raped

In the first place, that a robbery and rape occurred in the UK is baffling to me. She must’ve lived in a rough neighbourhood. Her committing suicide afterward is more surprising. Everybody has their beliefs. Fear of the unknown sent her to the grave.

I am not sure the police handled the case professionally. They ought to have left out the rape report from the public. Then, they said it was the trauma that made her travel to London. Later on, we heard rumors that the robbers got her infected. Nobody knows how true all that was then. What we know was that she died in a London flat. I remember her AJAYI was spelt AJAI. Then, as a female newscaster on Nta network, you'd be considered a diva.

She used to live in the next house to my Parents house in Festac Town around the 1980's.

My Mom admired her a lot !

I remember her passing away like yesterday.

That why I will Not blame Anty kemi badenoch Nigeria policing system is faulty and it’s beyond redemption, our judicial system is also faulty, honestly only God will help us its beyond what a particular politician can solve they will only be given us false hope. Her name was constantly spelt AJAI and she cast more on Newscap than on 9 pm.

May her soul rest well. There are too many troubles in the world, even in London!
