For the records these were never afrobeat

when fela was alive none of these people here could call their songs afrobeat

Afrobeat is reserved only for fela musics

And Fela, the founder of Afrobeats, has no songs in here?

Where is Zombie? Beast of a Nation?

=====================

Don't you guys think its time to draw the line between African songs and Afrobeats? Most of these songs here are simply African songs? 2face and Psquare's style were mostly Reggae. PSquare was doing some Pop & RnB. Abdelkareem was pure rap.

Only Wizkid's Ojuelegba is pure and refined Afrobeats. Fela and Tony Allen were the pioneers of this genre. There's a special african drum that goes with it, some percussions and usually a slow-type of beat with this special trumpet sound, and usually with some Yoruba lyrics to boot. It should be said that afrobeats lyrics tend to be socially conscious or afro-lifting.

Another pure trendy and modern afrobeat song you would find is Wande Coal's "So mi so".

Other sensational pure afrobeats songs are

Teni - "Askamaya" (extremely melodious beatz. I think Dr. Dolor or Spellz. Unbelievable beatz)
L.A.X - "Sempe" (Afrobeats on fire! Somehow underrated)
Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid - "Ma lo" (One of the most unforgettable Afrobeats collabo)
Runtown - "Energy" (Great. Some elements of Afrobeats)
Tiwa Savage - "49-99" (Traditional afrobeats)
Tiwa Savage ft Naira Marley - "Ole" - (Pure afrobeats)
Simi ft Adekunle Gold - "No forget" (Excellent afrobeats)

Wizkid ft Kuti - "Jaye Jaye"
Wizkid - "Ojuelegba" (One of the grandest)
Simi - "Joromi" (Classic afrobeats)
Fireboy - "Jealous" (Modern afrobeats)

Honourable mentions:

Skibii - "Sensima" (Experimental afrobeats)
Burna boy - "Anybody" (The intro of the song alone na afrobeats cheesy cheesy"wink

Please list more if I forgot. Thanks guys
fela was afrobeat founder, not afrobeats founder.

Any list without the Great and Legendary Fella Anikulapo Ransom Kuti is, to the best if my knowledge, no list.

1. Fela
2. Fela
3. Fela
4. Fela
5. Fela
6. Fela
7. Fela
8. Fela
9. Fela
10. Fela
11. Others can start entering the list.
Re: 25 Greatest Afrobeats Songs Of All Time (NO. 10 - 1) by lenghtinny(m): 6:50pm On Aug 21, 2025
Afrobeats has been turned into a songs sang by an African instead of the sound that was used to categorize the genre originally

Psquare has never produced any Afrobeats themed song because I’ve never heard the elements that make up Afrobeats in their songs. Infact their style was designed after the likes of Micheal Jackson and Usher than Fela.

Tuface has experimented with it before but African queen is not Afrobeats.

I’ll pick Reekado banks “Rora” as an Afrobeat song over many songs on this list angry

Where is this lie coming from, that Fela founded Afrobeat? (or even the one with 's')?
For your information, Fela is not the founder of Afrobeat. But he became the most popular, the most controversial and a freedom fighter because of his exposure and vision.
When Fela came back from London after his studies, he used to do menial side plays during musical shows at NTA but he was not getting any attention or recognition.
So Fela traveled to live in Ghana 1967-69 and he joined a musical band there called Hedzolleh. He was later joined in the same band by Hugh Masakela of South Africa. That is where he (and Hugh) learnt what is now called ''Afrobeat''.
Before Fela set up his band in Nigeria, Orlando Julius (a well established Afrobeat musician at the time) voluntarily gave him 3 of his (Orlando's) band boys to help Fela start his own band. So there were other musicians playing the ''Afrobeat'' sound before Fela.
The Afrobeat sound itself is deeply rooted in Highlife (from Ghana), with a heavy dose of the saxophone, bass guitar and drums.
