I watched Superman again, and as much as I liked the movie, I can’t shake the feeling that James Gunn tried to do too much. The plot isn’t strong enough, and the pacing is off. This movie lacks proper build-up. Emotional scenes fall flat because they’re just thrown at you with no setup. And without build-up, there can be no payoff. Take one of my favorite scenes, for example, Clark talking with his dad. That moment could have been powerful, but the Kents barely got any screen time. They appear at the start of the movie, then disappear until the end of Act 2. So why should I care? The twist with Jor-El’s message didn’t work for me either, because the movie never showed us that Superman is who he is thanks to his human parents. Clark Kent’s background is completely ignored. In fact, Clark doesn’t even exist in this movie, it’s all Superman. And in a film stuffed with characters, Clark gets the least amount of screen time. James Gunn clearly thinks introducing the DCU is more important than telling a standalone Superman story. I couldn’t care less about the Boravia–Jarhampur conflict because this movie commits one of cinema’s greatest sins: telling instead of showing. The film is weighed down by exposition, especially in the first hour. Take the interview scene, for example. That’s where we learn Superman interfered in global politics by stopping the invasion of Jarhampur and threatening the Boravian president. This ends up being a major part of the plot, yet the movie never shows us what Superman did in Boravia. Instead, everything is crammed into five minutes of exposition. Why? I thought the Justice Gang was okay, but let’s be real, the only reasons they’re in this movie are: 1. Gunn wants to establish that the DCU is a shared world with other heroes. 2. Gunn loves throwing teams of D-list characters into his movies and could not resist doing it again. The worst part for me was when Superman gets captured and poisoned with Kryptonite. The movie then shifts focus to the Justice Gang so they can get some spotlight in a Superman movie where they had no business being in the first place. Mr. Terrific was great, Guy Gardner was fine, and Hawkgirl had her moment when she killed Netanyahu. But this was the wrong movie for them. They got way too much screen time, time that should have gone to Clark and the Kents. When the movie first came out, people said Superman was weak and lost too often. I defended him. But after a second viewing, I can admit those complaints are not completely wrong. The movie tells us Superman has been around for three years and is the most powerful being in the world. But if that’s true, the world is cooked. Who’s protecting Metropolis when Darkseid invades? The same guy who got beaten by Hammer of Boravia? Definitely not. Lex Luthor countering Superman in a fight should not even be possible. Superman has superhuman speed. In the comics, he’s fast enough to race the Flash. But here, it feels like this Superman has not even unlocked his full speed, which makes no sense after three years. Clearly, Gunn intentionally nerfed him. Otherwise, how would the Engineer have time to fill his body with nanites? And don’t get me started on how easily Superman got captured. He sees Kryptonite and immediately collapses. His heat vision just stops working. A stronger Superman would have at least tried to break the glass with heat vision. This one didn’t even try. If Metamorpho hadn’t switched sides, he’d still be trapped. Speaking of heat vision, I almost forgot he had it until the third act. He spends most of the movie just flying around and throwing punches instead of using his full power. No wonder a mindless clone pinned him down until Krypto bailed him out. James Gunn needs to fix this and make Superman stronger. I want to see him unlock his full potential. Because right now, Omni-Man would rip him apart in seconds. It wouldn’t even be close. At this point, Superman is my least favorite James Gunn project. All three Guardians of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker are better. Gunn is clearly at his best when working with D-list characters, which makes it surprising he insists on writing and directing a Superman sequel. That said, I still like the movie. Gunn did capture Superman’s kindness, boy scout naivety, hope, and optimism. But after my second viewing, I give it a decent 7/10. |

BlackManta:Now here's a balanced review. And understandable. I have similar feeling with you that other James Gunn projects look superior to this movie to me. I still like this even if not amongst my favourites. But I feel and understand why it looked over stuffed and somewhat unbalanced. He prolly depowered Supes to make him attractive to the group of peeps who feel Supes is boring and overpowered. And there's the huge burden of setting up a franchise and Mr Terrific was the biggest benefactor of this storyline. I listened to a podcast of him this evening describing the movie and the expectations and I can feel his struggle with making this successful as well as acceptable to the general audience and kick-starting a franchise all at once. So I understand the narrative struggles. Overall, it was a good movie to me. |

I'm happy for him. After his breakout role in Severance, his stock has been rising. He's in the new MI movie as well.

I always knew it wouldn't be long before Netflix and Greta Gerwig IMAX theatrical release of her NARNIA films open the floodgates of filmmakers demanding for more theatrical releases and wiggle room for their films. Like it's been established, nothing beats theatrical. Your film might flop at the box office but the exposure and buzz is enough to put you in a whole better place when you eventually move to streaming than just the typical direct to streaming strategy. ° The Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) exited Netflix this week to produce films exclusively for theatrical release at Paramount-Skydance cos Netflix wasn't flexible enough. ° Rian Johnson ending his deal with Netflix for the Knives Out franchise. I just wish filmmakers like David Fincher and Guillermo Del Toro exit Netflix and make more of the films we've always known them for.

BlackManta:Going by your handle and your past antecedents here viz à viz your fierce defence of the DC lore, this is a brave review, it takes gut and I applaud you for it. it totally encapsulates my feelings the movie in as much as i wanted it to be all round good. This is hoping everyone on both divides take a cue. No lore is perfect, no filmmaker is perfect, especially whilst adapting an all timer comic character like the Supes with a rich history of cannon to choose from, things could easily go wrong or right. No need to stand in defiance and just overlook obvious flaws, just to prove that you love the lore so much and anything they drop is flawless... Hey, we might still have the darkie Snyderverse today, if audience just lapped it up, so criticism this "Superman" is getting, is for James Gunn to do better next time, if he really wants a successful universe... I still think 7/10 is a tad too much 😬, but hey, at least you can now see the light |

oyaskii:The criticism for this movie is coming from only a fraction of the audience/critics. Critics have already given him an approval to double-down on what he did with this movie. I was hoping this movie will kickstart something great for the DCU, but this point, I'm as excited as a sloth |

DieRich5:The last thing I will do is go back and forth about a CBM movie, that was the obsessed me in my early teens, still don't know what happened and why I really despise them now and somewhat giddy at their failures too I haven't seen this movie and I don't plan to, could the plot be crap? Don't know and don't care, I'm just stating the average review of CBM fans compared to the average audience who knows about superman the character. As someone who currently lives in the Chi and also lived in DC during my fellowship in Georgetown uni around the snyderverse years, the two geekiest cities over here, I can boldly say MOS version of the supes didn't have the love legacy currently have with "CBM fans" not the general audience and I'm talking about the character not the plot of both movies which is valid because those guys had shit to say about this one too. CBM fans got the supes they wanted while others wanted Batman in Red and Blue |

First of all, Superman does not exist. He's just a fictional character that you can make anything out of. Comics books of him gave many people different imaginations. Some foolish saw him as God. That's stupid to .me, because he never existed. James Gunn saw him in a certain way and portrayed him as such. I now wonder why he's hated for not following the imagination of others. |

Superman (2025) - 60% The DCU adopted the one strategy their retarded fans have criticized the MCU for years—using mediocre movies to break even or turn a profit at the box office. I don't know why I didn't piece it together before; this is clearly why James Gunn was hired—to create another version of the MCU. His job was to replace the M with a D and shoot all the movies in the same style that DC fans have called lame for years. I mean, how is it a coincidence that the very first movie that kick-starts the DCU is the worst thing James Gunn has directed since 2014? Nicholas Hoult is outstanding in this movie; he's just too good for it. Acting-wise, I think he is ahead of everybody else. I don't know why he didn't get praised a lot for this, but I love the fact that I wasn't aware of what he did and then I just went into the movie and got blown away. He beat David Corenswet (not like Corenswet stood a chance) in a movie where he's supposed to be number one. Also, he's the one with the stupidest script, but it's what he does with it that makes him stand out. Corenswet comes in second, and the rest could be replaced with C-list actors and the acting would still land. Corenswet is a good Superman; he's not a great actor, but he does what needs to be done. He nails Superman's character, although Gunn and his ideas do not allow him to showcase Superman's abilities. Their costumes are bad, except for Superman (I'm not blaming his mum) and Mr. Terrific. CGI and almost everything else is MCU-level stuff. There's nothing god-tier or next-level about anything else here. Everything is like what you've seen before in the MCU. In fact, the plot is bad; it has many aspects that don't make sense even by the standards of what the movie is working with—Lex Luthor being its biggest issue. For Hoult to handle this and beat Chukwudi Iwuji (the High Evolutionary) with what he delivered is really something. Anyways, enough about Hoult; everything I want to say concerning the plot has already been dissected on the thread. This one na MCU in disguise. Gunn shouldn't have written this movie; what worked in his Guardians movies doesn't work here. The pace is as dumb as the things that keep the movie going when the plot has run into a brick wall. |

Kaycee7:I saw it twice when it was in theaters and I loved it both times. I don't think they have a good idea about the power scaling most of them are complaining about in the movie. The Costumes they are also complaining about are comic book accurate. Plot was above average IMO but to each his own. I no get strength to argue about that one. |

I brought up some of my issues with the Superman speech to Lex Luthor... It didn't make sense at all, it felt insecure and whiny... Superman was not human, instead whining about him being human like the rest of us makes absolutely no sense... Feels like some sort of modern whiny teen having an emotional rant to his therapist... This kid crying about his feelings to Lex Luthor is not Superman at all... It follows the trend of modern Hollywood where male characters have become emotional disasters crying about their struggles at every turn... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFnKxPDBvrI?si=_QJnFCgLddNT9dge |

Palehair:Nepotism has always been a thing in Hollywood for a very long time, No? Heck, Francis Copolla inserted his daughter in The Godfather lore way back in the 70s, basically catapulting her career. M. Night Shyamalan includes his Daughters in his project even when it's clear other people could do a better job, even one of the daughters had to admit, she got the chance to adapt one of Ireland's biggest books, simply because of her last name. My point is, nepotism exists everywhere, and i am not even mad about it. No parent who can certainly soft lunch thier kid's career, will fold their hands and not do it, because that kid being successful in any field, tells on great on their own parenting too. DDL has always insisted on the gimmick that he his retired after bagging an unprecedented 3 Oscars, it was always gonna take, some sweet savoring nepotism to bring him back...so fairs i guess |
