IamANigerianMan:Software engineering is becoming less demanding because of AI. Microsoft and other tech giants recently layed off 5000 software engineering employees. I saw it on techcrunch. Learn oil drilling or Blockchain technology. |

Guy it's HSE, other jobs are specific while all those jobs need HSE. You can't talk about production in the oil and gas without talking about safety. |

Pick the one that makes a lot of money and invest wisely, a time will come when robots will take over 90% of the jobs. I have seen a documentary where people sit at the comfort of the office and control machinery in another state. |

You guys should go and learn hand work .. electrical, plumbing etc. I have been living comfortably as an electrician for almost 15 years with wife and children. Paying school fees, house rent, buying car and land, planing for future etc. Hand work still pays by far.. I wonder why so many young boys are shying away from it lately. |

| Re: Which Of These Skills Is Of High Demand by Chescowrites(m): 9:37pm On Aug 21, 2025 |
slim75d:OP, from that your list, cyber security and project management get better long-term demand. Cyber security especially dey hot now because companies no wan risk data breach, and project management go always be needed across industries. Caregiver too dey open doors abroad if you get plans to japa. But whichever one you pick, make sure you also think of how to use the income wisely. Some people I know dey even put their side earnings into small real estate co-ownership through Keble, just to secure something solid for the future. |

slim75d:Learn Cyber but I will be honest with you, it comes with interest. You can't learn it in 2 weeks because it's broad. It took me Years of Study and Interest to become a Cybersecurity Consultant/Tutor. If you do not have interest in Networking which is the bedrock of Cybersecurity, then don't bother yourself too much. Above all, I would advise you go for anyone you have passion for. |

Kutunban:In your dreams… ![]() AI can only replace repetitive coding and testing with finite outcomes. You should know that there is a difference between a Coder, a Developer, and a Software engineer. Software engineering still requires critical thinking, dynamic system design, and problem-solving, areas where AI independently is not yet at par with professionals. You may be tempted to say one can 'vibe code' applications, but doing so without technical knowhow, such as spotting errors, understanding context, or handling AI hallucinations, will make you hit a brick wall fast. As I always say, vibe coding without technical depth doesn't scale. Sooner or later, it breaks, and it usually ends in tears. To vibe code above the basics when thinking in systems, you need knowledge of data structures, algorithms, architecture (where necessary), and debugging strategies, because AI systems often hallucinate or fabricate problems that don't exist. Has someone vibe coded medium to large software before? The answer is YES, plenty of experienced engineers and developers have. Has someone with no technical know-how done the same? Definitely NOT successfully. Vibe coding anything rated as a medium system and above without technical depth is extremely unlikely to work. I used vibe coding as an example because it is often the first area people think about when they imagine people who write programs being replaced with AI doing the programming unsupervised. Summarizing : Coders (Computer Programmers) can always be replaced. Software Developers can partially be replaced. Software Engineers will hardly be replaced. Among the three, only a Software Engineer can even design and build the AI systems we rely on today. (I am not talking of mere using AI libraries or finetuning models. I am referring to building one from scratch). Kutunban:The correct statement should be "Software engineering is becoming more demanding because of AI" (to build AI), while people with lesser skill set in the field, like Programmers and Developers, are being replaced by AI. |
