$4bn Abuja-Lagos Superhighway Set To Take Off – AEC by NewDigitalWorld(op): 2:01pm On Aug 21, 2025
AEC Unity Network Limited has expressed confidence that work on its proposed 470-kilometre Abuja-Lagos Superhighway will soon commence, a development expected to cut travel time significantly between Nigeria’s two busiest cities.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the company’s Chairman, Dr Kenny Martins, described the $4 billion project as a landmark initiative that would provide a safer, faster, and more reliable alternative to existing road networks.

According to him, the highway will be designed for vehicles to move at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, drastically reducing the hours spent on the road.

“This is more than just a road. The Abuja-Lagos Superhighway will be a transformational infrastructure project that changes the way people and goods move between the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos.

“It will also open up rural communities, create jobs, and unlock new economic opportunities across the states it traverses,” Martins said.

The superhighway will cut across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT, with additional spurs to Ondo State and Baro Port in Niger State, a move projected to boost regional trade and logistics.

Dr Martins noted that, once operational, the road would help decongest existing corridors while reducing the cost and stress of moving commuters and cargo between Abuja and Lagos.

He added that the project is being implemented in collaboration with the Federal Executive Council, FEC, the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, ICRC, and the Federal Ministry of Works, under the supervision of Minister Dave Umahi.

“This road is not just for today but for future generations. By the grace of God, very soon Nigerians will be driving on this superhighway,” he assured.

The best comment on this thread. They'd never do that for a reason. Nigeria's leadership arrangement is turn by turn and chop make I chop. That's a long term project, from which they'd never see money to steal while in power.
A fast speed train project would have united us more and brought about even development. I'm surprised why the self-acclaimed democrat and architect of modern lagos isn't looking in this direction.

I may decide to grow oil and cocoa plantation in my maternal grandmother's hometown in ekiti and even relocate there and still, be doing my business in Lagos. Once it's 5pm, I'm already at the train station to catch my 1hr train back to ekiti, even up to my back yard and call it a day. Those living in Kano, Anambra, calabar can do same. This would have brought about even development in Nigeria. I can build a duplex with shikini moni, compared to spending a billion on same building in lagos. All I need is buy beer Cartons for the family with little cash and I'd be given 1 acre of land free. Instead of wasting billions of dollar on moribund refineries which always end up in their pocket, this is a project they should've considered for the sake of posterity.

Kogi state is such an unlucky state with leadership. There's a small town in Germany called Gackenbach, where there's a replica of lokoja mount patti with an elevator taking tourists to the mountain top in droves. The mountain top is as flat as mount patti in lokoja with several acres of land with hotels, restaurants and hospltals. On mount patti too could be hotels, housing estates, standard stadium and even an aerodrome. In bello's 8 years in office, he never visited there. I had driven there once. There's a radio station there owned by a retired military man called tunde ogbegha. Because bello was short-sighted and super corrupt, he didn't bother to look in that direction because that wouid have been a 15-20 years project. Lokoja would have been a great tourist destination.

We dont have a caring leader yet, who truly loves Nigeria. All we have are businessmen in pioitics.

People are hungry, the economy in a disaster and old roads are bad but u are building coastal roads and superhighway? With money we dont have. For what? undecided

Does a costal road or superhighway fix the economy? undecided If so How and when?

I blame complacent and docile Nigerians who talk any kind of rubbish and think selfishly only about themselves.

The proponents of this project are finding a way to commit FG to a project that won't see the light of the day. Can they muster the capital needed for the project on their own? Another way to arm-twist government to embark on a white elephant.
Before you come for me, please dig out the kind of person Chief Kenny Martins is.

As long as the federal government gets it done is what sensible Nigerians are concerned about Mr. Okafor. Everything shouldn’t be about bitterness and insult. It’s high time we have super high ways roads in Nigeria.

Chief Kenny Martins is the former President Olusegun Obasanjo's brother in-law. His twin sister was married to OBJ.

However, the superhighway is a good plan if it would cut travel time and feature modern security and emergency facilities along the route.

A rail spur and tracks connecting a State capitals such as Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to the rail tracks and terminus in Osogbo would also have opened up that frontier of Ekiti and Ondo States with the cost-efficient CNG-fueled trains for passenger and freight haulage. The same can be done to other States as well which are contiguous to the existing rail tracks around Nigeria. I recall reading the former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi stating that PMB promised he would connect Ekiti to Osogbo via a rail spur BUT it was never started before he left. These are the low-hanging fruits that the current President of Nigeria and his team can do before leaving office in 2031 at most.
