Otedola: How My Father’s £250,000 Loan Changed My Life by Islie(op): 9:17am On Aug 22, 2025
By : Abigail Ikhaghu

Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, said that a £250,000 loan by his late father and former governor of Lagos state, Michael Otedola, was the turning point that enabled him to build Zenon Petroleum into one of Nigeria’s most prominent oil trading companies.

Otedola disclosed this in his memoir, ‘Making It Big: Lessons from a Life in Business’, released on August 18 and already ranked number three on Amazon’s ‘Best Sellers in Business Biographies and Memoirs’.

The book, which blends personal narrative with business insights, traces his rise from modest beginnings to becoming a billionaire in his early 40s. It offers candid reflections on triumphs and setbacks, including the 2008 financial crisis, when he lost much of his fortune and how he rebuilt through strategic pivots and decisive leadership.

Beyond oil and gas, the memoir captures Otedola’s investments across multiple industries, including power generation through Geregu Power, finance through First HoldCo Plc, as well as ventures in shipping and real estate.

It also highlights his philanthropic commitments in education, healthcare and community development, which he describes as an essential part of leadership and legacy.

Reflecting on the £250,000 lifeline from his father, Otedola said the support gave him the confidence to seize opportunities in the fuel retail market.

Combining lessons on leadership, resilience and risk-taking, he also recalls how he backed his daughter, Florence Otedola (DJ Cuppy), with N10 million for her first major show at 16, an experience he described as a lesson in perseverance despite its poor turnout.

Otedola noted that mentorship and financial backing, which shaped his journey, remain central to how he supports his children and guides the next generation.

Make it big or go home.

Every billionaire was once faced with 3 options:
Make it big
Die
Or end up in jail

We know only the few successful ones

Try to understand people's perspective before rushing to quote them.

He meant $250,000 then, should be worth N250b now.

I don't care if the comparative analysis is correct, that's just what he meant.

You people should desist from this idea that he came from a wealthy home,

it's requires great diligence, hardwork and grace to attain that height.

He was well positioned and took the opportunities when it came.

If you think it's about your parents having money, how many Governors and president sons are among the richest in Nigeria today?

But out there, they claim self-made man.

The money was good. The connections and licences he got opened even more doors.

No real 9ja rich man/woman without political money.

Even Cosharis, one of the most honest businessmen out there, still benefitted from govt contracts to supply cars.

True poverty is sincerely in the mind. People who suffer from this sort of poverty have this fascinating desire for instant wealth while being, at the same time, fanatically loyal to the concept of impossibility.

You ought to realize that all generational wealth was started by a man who at one point in the history of his family, was as poor as everyone else.

Similarly, generational poverty arises out of the action of a man who, at one point in the history of his family, had the same opportunity as everyone else and did not build on it.

Can't waste my money buying a book written by these type of wealthy men.

When someone from grass to grace share their life time experiences, then I can buy. Give me just 100m naira and come back in the next 3 years to see me. 90% of newly established businesses fold up because of lack of money or access to good loan.

I am talking from 100% experience as entrepreneur, if you are a young guy, and you don't have good capital to start up a good business in Nigeria, it is better you find a salary job that pay little or japa if you can afford. The current economic reality do not allow small scale business who don't have access to capital to survive or make a reasonable progress in the long run.

I like the fact that they are writing books now but non of them would ever write how bribe and kickbacks are paid to dislodge others who are in the same industry.

NIGERIAN is a country that values monopoly over competitive growth. It happened in the cement industry during Obj's regime,it is happening in the beverage companies presently.

If u enter the same industry, without a big politician backing u,u will never go anywhere. These are part of the men that got to that space because of OBJ and IBB.

Obj and IBB made Dangote,Otedola. While IBB made Authur Eze and the owner globacom,Gado Nasko and many other I can't remember now.
