Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has sparked controversy after reacting to Peter Obi’s condolence visit to the family of late Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, visited the Rufai family on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at their residence in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos—one day after the football icon was buried.

Obi, accompanied by former international Sylvanus Okpala, spent time with the family, offered prayers, and signed the condolence register.

He explained that he had only learned of the burial date the day before, while in Abuja, and flew to Lagos early that morning to pay his respects.

However, shortly after the visit, Olayinka took to social media to question the motive behind Obi’s action.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“Peter AGBỌ́TIKÚYỌ̀ Obi.

“Peter Rufai died on July 3, 2025, he is paying condolence visit on August 23, 2025, just because of what Taribo West said. Just anything for the camera and media shaaa.”

The tweet appeared to link Obi’s visit to earlier comments made by former Super Eagles defender Taribo West, who had criticized the silence of Nigerian Football Federation and other local football association following Rufai’s death.

Olayinka suggested that Obi’s visit was a reaction to that criticism and aimed more at gaining media attention than offering genuine condolence.

His remarks sparked mixed reactions online.

While critics of Obi echoed Olayinka’s view, accusing the former Anambra governor of using the visit for publicity, others defended Obi’s actions, describing them as sincere and timely given his explanation.

Peter Rufai was buried this weekend and it's normal that the deceased family will still be receiving visitors especially those who could not attend the burial.
PMB was buried about over a month ago and the family is still receiving visitors even after moving to Kaduna.
