Many of these footballers didn’t have the opportunity to go beyond secondary school education. I would suggest that African football players should endeavour to take some courses on financial investment so as to have the understanding.

If not for financial recklessness lifestyle how do you become broke after been paid in foreign stable currency weekly as an african talk more as a nigerian for years.

You know that for sure? It's an investment he had whether primary or secondary, and I would expect if it wasn't yeilding profit he should have closed it down.

The international market isn't the only market target for academies by the way.

Even if his target was local clubs he should still have been making something decent!

I don't know if taribo was being overly dramatic or entitled. But these people have no business depending on aid to organize their funeral after demise because they should have lived at least a decent and comfortable life with what they were exposed to. They are people without half the opportunities these guys had that are doing well... even if not rich but comfortable.

Imagine if I have just 10% of the fame, popularity, exposure (not even talking of the amounts he received during his career for now o) someone like rufia has/had then still solicit funds for my funeral.

I agree not only should I be jailed, but I should be sho. T dead again after dying.

Everything falls back to planning and going easy on the extravagant lifestyle. (Rufia has never struck me as extravagant though) saving something decent especially when you know and understand the kind of country and football FA you have.

Our greatest problem is that majority of us lack financial discipline and proper planning towards the future.

An average European players are already planning towards their retirement ten years ahead. Some will join the coaching crew and start taking courses in coaching. While some will start investing in a football club while some will start a football academy, training future players which he will later be their agent in the future.

Footballers or not, everyone must have a retirement plan in whatever field we found ourselves.

The biggest investment in life in human investment. Many of our football players during their time couldn't point a single footballer they mentor, sponsor to attain greater height.

Our musicians are doing so, helping upcoming artists and by doing that they remain in the industry and still have boys they're making money from.

Who does contribution to humanity help in the present naija reality? Jay Jay okocha is making a living through his betting company to take care of himself and family.
Naija is not a place you say you do anything for humanity, people will demand and take your give away while some will hail you, other will still yab you that you did not do enough. Peter Obi that is going around donating money for borehole, giving money to nursing schools and other critical areas, has the reactions not been negative from some people that have never done anything good before? That is why some considered sabinus foolish for tarring roads in his community in PH, if by mistake his earnings reduces and he goes broke, it is the same people of that community that will yab him and consider him an object of redicle. Ahmed musa that built stadium and others, let him go broke then you see how far if he wount be neglected. Those days guys considered mikel Obi a stingy guy that did nothing for humanity, omo, the guy kept his money, stayed abroad far from hungry people back home, he is currently enjoying his money in retirement. I bet you if he had returned to Nigeria, his story would have been like taribo, rufai and the others.
Omo, if you have money save it, invest it, take care of your family, as a man also enjoy your life, fly to London, Paris, Turkey, China for goodtime, eat the finest cheese, forget about charity aka humanity, cos they wount remember you when the chips are down.

You are right anyone can go broke but if a footballer that plan his career very well and invest wisely go broke..... that brokenness is just a facade , he will still have alot of things to fall back too... but if you don't have something to fall back to naa Oyo you dey

Even our so call politician no earn 10% of what some players earn annually.... if you know what is good for you ... then you invest especially in Properties like land and house

99% of Nigerians including politicians and salary earners have 0% financial literacy. This is why they don't know what to do with a windfall and resort to borrowing immediately after a windfall. The desire to live larger than life is one resounding reason for their financial recklessness. The 1% that have financial literacy can be found amongst the illiterate market traders

Kanu Nwankwo invested in a lot of real Estate in Oniru then but he was swindled and today he is struggling, baba just pray for grace ..Even Micheal Jackson was facing heavy financial problems when he died ..You can invest in businesses they will fail , you can invest properties and you will still need to sell all once money is not coming.

I know anybody can go broke if life happens but many people failed to use the money for investment before enjoyment.
That 5 million could get him 100 acres of land at 20k per acres.
Let say he bought 100 acres and plant cash crops on it, I am sure that now, he will still be up in his game because such investment will give him multi million yearly.
But if you advise them, they will say “ it’s my money”
“I am not a farmer” bla bla bla .
It’s not until you become a farmer before you can own a farm.
If not for the doggedness of our fore fathers, Nigeria will not be one of the best in Cocoa exportation.
As cheap as 10 million naira is, if they use it to buy land and invest there, such land could valued at 100 million in 30 years time, and probably that’s when they will have one serious sickness like kidney problem because of their partying lifestyle they lived.
Now, to get money for surgery, they will now be blame federal government for negligence, not knowing they spent lavishly while they were young and agile.
Even if federal government promised and did not fulfill it, if you have your own money, you will not even remember that a government promised you something.
After hitting a crazy jackpot that you don’t think you can hit in your life. You invest before you Enjoy and not the otherwise.
