georgeakins:I'm not aware of that. Can you show a proof to back this claim? Let's assume it's true, which I doubt, it's normal as a businessman to owe banks. All I'm saying is, he had lots of investments. If he's owing, he has collateral to cover it or has he filed for bankruptcy ?. The VI hotel alone is valued in billions. He's not a broken man to say the least. Taiye that i mentioned also had 1 hotel in france |

You don't want entitled football players who represented your country for at least 15 years, but you worship politicians and pay them pension for life for doing a paid job? |

brain54:Hilarious belief! Running a private football academy or club in Nigeria is one quick way to run into poverty. You run it hoping that one day luck will find you. Bro, I have a firsthand experience of how private football academies and clubs operate in Nigeria. Over 99% keep it open out of passion. Profit ke? ![]() Rufai sank all he earned in that unprofitable venture. Please when talking about football academy, don't let European and even South African models deceive you to think that's how it functions properly here in Nigeria. In a broken system, every part suffers...a case study of Nigeria. ![]() |

Efe of big brother won 25 million in 2017 , like 4 years later, baba dey beg peruzzi for 200k Olawale project fame of MTN won the contest in 2013 and was given 5 million with a suv, after like 5 years, baba dey do Uber in Lagos state. Then , in 2014, he was comparing himself with wizkid. I know anybody can go broke if life happens but many people failed to use the money for investment before enjoyment. That 5 million could get him 100 acres of land at 20k per acres. Let say he bought 100 acres and plant cash crops on it, I am sure that now, he will still be up in his game because such investment will give him multi million yearly. But if you advise them, they will say “ it’s my money” “I am not a farmer” bla bla bla . It’s not until you become a farmer before you can own a farm. If not for the doggedness of our fore fathers, Nigeria will not be one of the best in Cocoa exportation. As cheap as 10 million naira is, if they use it to buy land and invest there, such land could valued at 100 million in 30 years time, and probably that’s when they will have one serious sickness like kidney problem because of their partying lifestyle they lived. Now, to get money for surgery, they will now be blame federal government for negligence, not knowing they spent lavishly while they were young and agile. Even if federal government promised and did not fulfill it, if you have your own money, you will not even remember that a government promised you something. After hitting a crazy jackpot that you don’t think you can hit in your life. You invest before you Enjoy and not the otherwise. |

Kewtt:Who does contribution to humanity help in the present naija reality? Jay Jay okocha is making a living through his betting company to take care of himself and family. Naija is not a place you say you do anything for humanity, people will demand and take your give away while some will hail you, other will still yab you that you did not do enough. Peter Obi that is going around donating money for borehole, giving money to nursing schools and other critical areas, has the reactions not been negative from some people that have never done anything good before? That is why some considered sabinus foolish for tarring roads in his community in PH, if by mistake his earnings reduces and he goes broke, it is the same people of that community that will yab him and consider him an object of redicle. Ahmed musa that built stadium and others, let him go broke then you see how far if he wount be neglected. Those days guys considered mikel Obi a stingy guy that did nothing for humanity, omo, the guy kept his money, stayed abroad far from hungry people back home, he is currently enjoying his money in retirement. I bet you if he had returned to Nigeria, his story would have been like taribo, rufai and the others. Omo, if you have money save it, invest it, take care of your family, as a man also enjoy your life, fly to London, Paris, Turkey, China for goodtime, eat the finest cheese, forget about charity aka humanity, cos they wount remember you when the chips are down. Go and ask of Queen Naomi and that Ibadan radio guy that planned charity event that went south, no be jail them land? To say them use that money buy car, go London or chop am belle full, them no for go jail. |

madridguy:Some European footballers also go broke after retirement. Bad investment, gambling, substance abuse, financial illiteracy, huge tax arrears bills, demanding family members, etc. Despite that even an average European bank can give you good advice on safe investment of your money as a customer. Never mind the many accountants in private practice everywhere. They can help understand the tax implications of investments. Mike Tyson once went broke. Many American sportsmen and musicians too. Clubs should start supporting players right from the Academy level on managing money. The FA too. Footballers' Union must introduce such programmes too. After retirement, many ex-footballers said they still had good money but became depressed. They had only known football since age of 6 or 7. Suddenly they were at home. The camaraderie of fellow players and the bubble ended. They could not just go out freely. So, locked at home, some turned to alcohol and online gambling. These days, footballers do their badges before, start a tangible businesst or make inroads into punditry before before retirement. |

SarkinYarki:I had to login to quote you, this was my first thought as i read the headline. This life is a mystery, Brown Ideye should remember Peter in the bible, out of overzealousness to prove his loyalty to his master Jesus, unknowingly set himself up, and his fall was epic. Though, I'm not in any way encouraging financial recklessness, but some truth are better left unsaid. "Let he that thinketh he standeth, take heed, lest he fall" says the apostle Paul. |

iwaeda:Thank you, Mr Ideye. Nigerian footballers and athletes put the FG to ransom every time they play and win a tournament for the country. They even went on strikes, refusing to play and often earned exorbitant amount of money from the government. Elsewhere, governments don't fund sports but our people here have taken their entitlement mentality to the rooftop; they were given national honours, houses and funds and they enjoyed high level of publicity and good will, yet they wanted the govt to foot their bills for life. Until sports are fully privatised in Nigeria, we are going nowhere and someone like me will continue to stage a walk-out and boycott, cos I am now a player hater though without a play hater degree (PhD). I think PhD and MSc holders hate players for a just cause -think about it! |

[quote author=Kingosytex post=136562615]He is making some points. The problem is the entitlement that most of them have as if they weren't paid doing their playing days. If they should be pampered, then all retired civil servants should be taken care of too. [/quote Imagine. Super falcon players received #150m each in a single tournament plus houses and other gifts from their Governors apart from money from their clubs and endorsement deals oh then someone is blaming the government for not paying them superannuation after retirement. Wetin go come happen to soldiers, civil servants wey retire at age 60 without stepping their foot on Cairo talkless of Europe and their total gratuity is less than #5m? |
