We are obviously not ready in this country with this blame game, even the Europeans una dey quote, their players still dey inside the system after retirement

One thing is back home football is shitty

Deco is barca sporting director today, it was Abidal formerly

Alonso is a Real Madrid coach today same as Vincent Kompany

But our own football has no imprint of ex-footballers and we think they won't be growing broke

Not every will succeed in business, but if you succeed in a particular sport, it is still easier to find your way around that.

They want to pile on all the problems on the government with tax payers money.
Forget that thing wey Ideye dey talk, even sports can pay them for life, we don't just have the right system

The European clubs you are talking about, they have a system where even ex-footballers are valued

Many Ex-footballers have gone on to become great coaches and administrators but here na civil servant still dey do all of these stuffs

Tell me why a sport minister slot will be allotted to those who have never played any sport professionally?

Sports is a big business on its own that can accommodate all ex-players and feed them for life sef

You made a valid point.

Peter Rufai has MBA degree.

No matter the income, if expenses are higher, it will end in premium tears. Many American basketball players or football players who earned millions of dollars ended up broke within five years after retirement. Most of them treated their incomes like winning the lottery.

Your typical Nigerian wants money for only two reasons: To oppress or to impress.

/
You nailed it.

True
Why did Odegbamis, Amasiemekas not turn beggars, not to talk of Ahmed Musa, Mikel Obis, Drogbas, Etos, George Weahs, after Nigeria has given them platform to showcase them to the world, most of them still want Nigerian government to finance their weddings, buy diapers for their babies etc as if their services brought goldmine to Nigeria, bunch of lazy and ungrateful people. It is even annoying, not as if some of them even deserved to play for Nigeria on merit.
But Liverpool did everything to honour diogo Jota

Our values has a nation is being faded away right in our sight and because we want to sound right, we keep ignoring that

Africa needs to create a market for sport that can keep these guys busy even after retirement

We need to also invest in having professional certification schools, not everyone will want to go back to school after fame

But if there are these schools where you can learn just one thing professionally, many of them will jump on it

Does it please you to know that even most of the ex-athlete that even manages to do well in life after retirement run out of Nigeria cos there are no markets for them here

You can't even contest to be a State FA chairman, not to talk of MFA president, not to talk of being the super eagles coach

Our economy is also mostly an underpaid one, so persons that have been enjoying salaries in foreign currency now start living with the small change that they get here

In all, we need to still improve our standards as a nation, it is wrong for us to accept this current situation as the best we can have at the moment

It's a debate that's rife among Nigerians that the recent crop of professional footballers especially those who play outside the shores of this country and being paid in more valuable & stable currencies, would end up being broke... It's an abomination. Though, Ideye mentioned something profound and very important which is to to pray and be lucky to have good & sincere support systems like professional & sincere investment advisers and brand management team (not scammers).

Investment doesn't matter the low pay. Start small ans start somewhere.

In response to your assumption, the pay the older players earned then was also commensurate with the economy back then.
I understand your point but logically, Nigeria of those days of little or no investment ideas, unknown tomorrow ,etc. They can slightly be exonerated. That's y we still have old actors, retired civil servants, etc in the society still struggling. In next 5-10years, u will see most people will be independent. Nigeria was once like a forest, zoo, primitive but today, it's developing and learning. Do u know that England pays it's old players some stipends till date? Life is learning everyday

But I still wonder why bro jay jay Okocha is hawking betting company as his contribution to humanity

He runs a promo/campaign for the company and also gets super super paid for it to say the least and it's better than being idle.
Let's stop the narrative of dropping comments on issues and topics we have zero clue about.

This is stupidity at it's peak
Taribo was lamenting about dodo mayana not other ex professionals
Rufai was royalty from...lagos and yet even the donation from the FA was shortchanged
Also rufai was already leaving the game before the big money came in
Have you seen taribo, ikpeba or papilo asking for help?
Exactly!!!

Who does contribution to humanity help in the present naija reality? Jay Jay okocha is making a living through his betting company to take care of himself and family.
Naija is not a place you say you do anything for humanity, people will demand and take your give away while some will hail you, other will still yab you that you did not do enough. Peter Obi that is going around donating money for borehole, giving money to nursing schools and other critical areas, has the reactions not been negative from some people that have never done anything good before? That is why some considered sabinus foolish for tarring roads in his community in PH, if by mistake his earnings reduces and he goes broke, it is the same people of that community that will yab him and consider him an object of redicle. Ahmed musa that built stadium and others, let him go broke then you see how far if he wount be neglected. Those days guys considered mikel Obi a stingy guy that did nothing for humanity, omo, the guy kept his money, stayed abroad far from hungry people back home, he is currently enjoying his money in retirement. I bet you if he had returned to Nigeria, his story would have been like taribo, rufai and the others.
Omo, if you have money save it, invest it, take care of your family, as a man also enjoy your life, fly to London, Paris, Turkey, China for goodtime, eat the finest cheese, forget about charity aka humanity, cos they wount remember you when the chips are down.
Go and ask of Queen Naomi and that Ibadan radio guy that planned charity event that went south, no be jail them land? To say them use that money buy car, go London or chop am belle full, them no for go jail.
What Peter Obi is doing is not giving back to the society, he is only campaigning. Giving back to society is charity, you are not doing it for gain. A politician who stole from a State, is going about sharing that meagre amount of money, hoping to gain votes in the next election is not giving back to the society.

Some European footballers also go broke after retirement. Bad investment, gambling, substance abuse, financial illiteracy, huge tax arrears bills, demanding family members, etc. Despite that even an average European bank can give you good advice on safe investment of your money as a customer. Never mind the many accountants in private practice everywhere. They can help understand the tax implications of investments.

Mike Tyson once went broke. Many American sportsmen and musicians too.

Clubs should start supporting players right from the Academy level on managing money. The FA too. Footballers' Union must introduce such programmes too.

After retirement, many ex-footballers said they still had good money but became depressed. They had only known football since age of 6 or 7. Suddenly they were at home. The camaraderie of fellow players and the bubble ended. They could not just go out freely. So, locked at home, some turned to alcohol and online gambling.

These days, footballers do their badges before, start a tangible businesst or make inroads into punditry before before retirement.
When those European and American sportsmen go broke, they never rely on the government to feed them. They are not entitled.

I don talk my own, any player who reached the level of playing in Europe and got broke later in life and some people start gaslighing Nigerians on the Idea of not taking care of him, the player and the people supporting him are compound idiots. Nigeria is not owing you anything you were paid your full bonus while playing part time for Nigeria on matches you were supposed to play for free considering the fact that most of your compatriots were swimming in Poverty while you were swimming in luxury then

if you use the context he was coming from, ideally a person who was paid in europe weekly isn't suppose to be broke, although then financial literally wasn't common so alot of people were not wise with their income

On a lite note, I feel our living nation heroes are to be giving stipend to atleast live a normal life by their association, it's a good deed, doing something at a national level is no small feet.

That's a lie, even though it wasn't as huge as it is it is now,but it was huge to give you and your family luxury life till the end if you manage it well. I remember when we were small during those times when complete football Magazine was our Internet for everything football, the wages then were as mind blowing as it is now. If you lay your hands on those wealth then and got broke later in life na you do yourself, nobody should gaslight Nigeria for not taking care of anybody even their colleagues in Europe are not been taken care of by their country at old age

Imagine Taribo West bought a house that can house around 500 cars in Milan. He's presently crying foul as we owe him something. Many of the ex international were on spree spending and thought many was like water and cannot finish. CR7 built 7 stars hotels to his name. He's thinking of retirement already, unlike our African hero like Amokachi that bought private jet barely 3 years to his career abroad.

I'm not aware of that. Can you show a proof to back this claim? Let's assume it's true, which I doubt, it's normal as a businessman to owe banks. All I'm saying is, he had lots of investments. If he's owing, he has collateral to cover it or has he filed for bankruptcy ?. The VI hotel alone is valued in billions. He's not a broken man to say the least. Taiye that i mentioned also had 1 hotel in france

The outcome of life doesnt always go as planned or the way you predict it to be, so when you see a man or woman living in poverty at old age, struggling and hustling to earn a living, some of you jump into conclusion that they either spent their money unwisely,, they didn't invest or they didn't they save for rainy days

There are people who never did anything bad to deserve being poor but are are living in penury

Life can happen and throw anyone off balance. It could be lack of opportunity, failed investment, terminal illness or series of bad luck

Most people you see as failures at their old age didn't plan for it. They hustle quite well and some of them were doing well before the uncertainty of life hits them

They shouldn't be jailed, but they have no one to blame but themselves.

However NFF should engage local and international investment firms to organise financial management training for all players in the National Teams. In fact they should start from U17, so that they know the basics even before earning big.

Even if at age 20 and earning a net salary of £20k a week, if you set up automatic deduction of £5k a week, that's N572mln in a year.

Invested at NGN 2045 bonds for 15% and compounded till maturity, that's N4.6bln waiting for you in 15 years.

Do the same in USD at 4% and that's $608k waiting for you.

This is another problem being faced by the ex footballers.

Some of them are very interested in investing but so unfortunate investing in bad business or bad people/partner who are only interested in scamming them and taking their hard earned money.

Many of these footballers didn’t have the opportunity to go beyond secondary school education. I would suggest that African football players should endeavour to take some courses on financial investment so as to have the understanding.
When Didier Drogba divorce his wife, we were all surprised. Because Drogba is one cool guy we all know and respect.
I think he did what was best for his peace of mind.
Apart from financial literacy, we need to put peace of mind as a priority too.

Lol. In the West, there is social safety net provided by the govt.
If they get really badly broke, they can get housing and basic support to live. It's only that they have lived a luxury life that basic life may seem like poverty. But millions of Europeans and Americans live such basic life.

It's 9ja that has no govt social support.

Peter rufia has a football academy...

I don't know if taribo was being overly dramatic or entitled. But these people have no business depending on aid to organize their funeral after demise because they should have lived at least a decent and comfortable life with what they were exposed to. They are people without half the opportunities these guys had that are doing well... even if not rich but comfortable.

Imagine if I have just 10% of the fame, popularity, exposure (not even talking of the amounts he received during his career for now o) someone like rufia has/had then still solicit funds for my funeral.

I agree not only should I be jailed, but I should be sho. T dead again after dying.

Like I said maybe na taribo just dey over play the matter for his own reasons.

Everything falls back to planning and going easy on the extravagant lifestyle. (Rufia has never struck me as extravagant though) saving something decent especially when you know and understand the kind of country and football FA you have.

Why can you depend on them?
How do we know it wasn’t the family lying that they needed money? Rufai was sick, abi? So who was in charge of his money?

You can't compare Diego jota's situation, not similar man. Jota's situation is unplanned sudden ending. Moreover, the family are not crying for help or labelling their country or club authority in a bad light. Jota situation is a compassionate driven, individuals, clubs are willing to give to support the family left behind. We have not even heard gift announcement from Portugal his country
