Bro , I give it to AASU at least they re the only union working in Nigeria even though they are fighting for their own .

The other union we ve ( labor union ) when was the last time they fought for the masses ? Aside the Adams oshiomole regime no union leader as been able to stand against the last & current administrations.

.A university lecturer informed me that powerful figures in universities oppose the proposed interest-free loan scheme because it threatens their long-standing control through cooperative societies. For years, these cooperatives have exploited staff by enforcing compulsory deductions and charging outrageous interest rates, effectively ripping them off under the guise of financial support. Instead of serving as mutual aid platforms, they have operated like loan sharks, enriching a few while leaving many staff trapped in debt. The introduction of interest-free loans directly undermines this exploitative system, stripping the cooperatives (usually controls by the elite and senior staffs ) of their unfair advantages and reducing the influence of those profiting from staff hardship.

Bat is giving the loan because it serves his propaganda optics.

The N8b for about 107 universities amounts to about N70,000 per staff using an average of 1000 staff per institution.

Meanwhile, the government is owing:

1. 2-3 years salary arrears for most tertiary institutions,

2. 4 months wage award to all federal workers,

3. 1 month minimum wage arrears for all tertiaryinstitutions,

4. 12 months 25%/35% salary adjustment for all tertiary institutions

5. 4 months withheld salaries for federal universities

6. NHF remittances

7. Union and cooperative dues running into several month in some cases...

These are just a few legitimate earnings of tertiary institution workers the government is owing. For a single staff, the money can run into millions of naira.

But instead of bat to pay these legitimate earnings, he wants to give 'N70,000' loans and call it an achievement... his minions are even already using it for propaganda.

Clowns in power...

The reality is not even everyone can get or even needs the loans, but everyone is entitled to and needs thier legitimate earnings.

Your lecturer friend is a novice who just picked his appointment letter last Monday. Cooperatives particularly ACADA have been a lifesaver to countless academic staff. Most charge less than 10 percent and they can barely keep up. One can join with as low as 5k deduction monthly. Even at that one can still take loan facility from other sources. They do annual financial reports so every kobo is accounted for. Cooperatives save families particularly during strikes so tell your lecturer to go and rest and pay up his acada loan. Government is a continuity and so they should settle an agreement and see if loan is required to uplift the working conditions of academics. Why be in a rush to release a loan facility in less than 2 months but footdrag on implementing an agreement borne out of collective bargaining? You dey owe me money but u wan give me loan. In those days the norm was employers owing workers for a month's long tasking. These days and from henceforth it is workers that will owe their employers for the privilege of being enslaved on their sites, fields, workshops and offices.

Strange times indeed.

The government that had exclusive rights to the evil of the debt trap is now franchising to the citizens one institution after another. It is in effect mortgaging it's responsibility to building a prosperous and equitable society by the instruments of good governance.

This government's model: If you are poor, just borrow.

It’s obvious that you don’t know what the loan is all about or how it is going to operate. There is nothing concerning ASUU in the loan, as there is no point in asking ASUU to guarantee or serve as surety. The money is meant for university staff, and the beneficiaries are supposed to repay it from their salaries. I don’t need to know the name of the cooperative, as that is immaterial to the discussion here. What is important is this: what else could make a man think that a ₦5 million loan at 10% interest, repayable within 24 to 36 months, is better than a ₦10 million interest-free loan with a 10-year repayment period, if not ignorance?
