Lagos may shine bright during the day, but when the sun sets, some corners of the city reveal a darker reality. Despite police raids and government interventions, certain neighborhoods remain notorious for cult gang activities—areas where fear lingers, and residents whisper about who controls the streets after dark. Eyes Of Lagos reports, 1. Mushin – The Old Battleground Mushin has long carried the reputation of being a cultism hotspot. Known for its vibrant markets and bustling transport hubs, it is also a breeding ground for rival gangs and cult groups. Residents often avoid certain streets at night, especially around the railway axis and Ladipo area, where skirmishes have erupted in recent years. Known Groups: , Eiye Confraternity Recent Incident: 2024 saw a spike in clashes tied to political thuggery during local elections. 2. Bariga – The Silent Territory Once a hub for underground music and street art, Bariga still grapples with a lingering presence of cult gangs. These groups operate silently, often tied to street extortion, local turf wars, and violent reprisals. Hotspots: Somolu-Bariga borders, Ilaje area Community Efforts: Youth NGOs have started rehabilitation programs to reclaim the streets. 3. Ikotun – The Growing Red Zone Ikotun’s expanding population and porous routes have made it a haven for cult activities, especially around popular bus stops and joints. Reports link some of these gangs to illicit drug trade and petty armed robbery. Recent Crackdowns: NDLEA operations in 2025 exposed drug peddling rings tied to cult networks. Why It Persists: Lack of consistent security patrols and dense population. 4. Ajegunle (A.J. City) – Old Ghosts, New Tricks Ajegunle, known for its cultural energy and music legends, has a dual identity. While it is home to thriving businesses, certain pockets remain under the grip of local gangs who recruit young boys with promises of fast cash and street protection. Danger Zones: Boundary-Ajegunle, Awodi-Ora axis Local Saying: “If you no know person for night, no waka anyhow.” 5. Okokomaiko – The Hidden Trail Farther out from Lagos mainland’s core, Okokomaiko is one of those places that rarely makes headlines but quietly breeds violent turf rivalries. Transport hubs and university areas nearby create a melting pot for gang recruitment. Clashes: Students and transport workers have been caught in crossfires. Community Reaction: Residents say they only feel safe during daylight. Why Cultism Still Thrives in Lagos Despite police efforts and occasional raids, cultism in Lagos thrives due to: Political patronage during elections High youth unemployment Drug abuse fueling violence Weak enforcement in known hotspots Final Thoughts These areas represent just a fragment of Lagos’ ongoing battle with cultism. As authorities intensify crackdowns, residents call for not just force, but community-driven solutions—rehabilitation, job creation, and education—to reclaim their streets. https://eyesoflagos.com/the-hidden-lagos-5-places-cult-gangs-still-rule-after-dark/ cc: Mynd44 , Nlfpmod , Seun

Annoyingly, the government are aware of their activities but doing nothing about it The Ikorudu cult menace is getting out of the hand |

helinues:Sadly it looks like the government will have to go and warm eba chop cuz I doubt it will be easy for them to curtail gang related incidents completely. Well I know El-Salvador President is doing well with that though but government is government in many parts of the world and the street is the street. Even if the government still provides a million and one jobs for them, dem still nor go do am. Many of them are just born “for the street”. God help us. |

Osebanjo:How is Ogun state government curtailing cultist activities that Lagos state can? |
| Re: The Hidden Lagos: 5 Places Cult Gangs Still Rule After Dark by Osebanjo(m): 6:09am On Aug 25, 2025 |
helinues:Ogun state curtailing what bro? It’s already part of the society. And honestly if anyone offer me the job to govern that Lagos state, I’d rather run away and live in exile 😂😂 That state is way too overcrowded. Most times I pity the commissioner of police of that state and the governor. |

Osebanjo:You have not been updated. Check Makinde Fasunle on Facebook, just one of the media always exposing the arrest of the cultists from Ogun state. There are still other media page like that |

helinues:LOL. Bro nor worry. We’ll be here. There’s no need checking any Facebook page for cultism related post. Sebi na Ogun state? ABK and Sagamu boys Dey come. Dem dey reboot for now. 😁😁 |

Osebanjo:The point is you can't compared the way Lagos state is handling cultism related case with Ogun state as Ogun state government are not tolerating it. That doesn't mean cultism activities still don't exist in the state |

fijiano202:Don't mind the poster, they left out Oshodi and the Mile 2 axis as well. That list is highly inaccurate. There are places they mentioned that I would take my chances, the two I listed, once it's dusk, you won't see my brake light anywhere there, never mind night. |

helinues:You’ve not even been to ikorodu before and you think you have a say concerning issues over there… The height of cultist menace in ikorodu was 2010 to 2017,tho bad boys still exist, but it’s way more peaceful because of the presence of local vigilantes called Onyabo…so don’t speak foul of ikorodu bro…. But again, what’s life without proper bedmatics skills seff,I’m here to solve all your woes |

I wonder y Ikorodu especially Anibaba & Itu Nla areas was skipped in the top 5 These areas are notoriously dangerous, and are scenes of fatal cult clashes with rival gang members often invading these neighborhoods at will, leading to tragic casualties which can also include innocent bystanders. Other areas include Ojo, Agege (Papa & Orile), Ilaje/Makoko, Ikorodu, Mile 2. These areas are frequently cited as crime hotspots where cults or area boys prey on residents and commuters, especially at night. |
