In cities that are largely unplanned with no strict land laws or lands are considered ancestral and passed down the family, this will be the norm. You cannot try it in larger cities like Abuja.

Land is only leased for up to 99 years after which it returns to the FG so you cannot possible bury your dead relatives or yourself there and that is why they have designated burial grounds however in my home town, I have 3 uncles an aunt and my grand dad buried around the house...and my grand mum buried in her bedroom.

I guess to prevent the family from selling the property. My dad insisited we bury him in his main house. He even choose the exact site within the compound. Wait till you see those burying people inside the living room
I just came back from my uncle's burial.
Before he died, he told his Children that they should hurt him in his bedroom and that's where he was buried.

House that he didn't build but he inherited, leaving his brother with nothing, even with some space left at the back of the house.

Even in death he was still very greedy.
Very Greedy man.
Thank God for my Dad that has built his own house

For future reference. So that you can tell your children where some of their relations were buried.

It's expensive.
Burying site for dead body now cost btw 1.8m to 2.5m depends on the location.
Where we buried my beloved baby sister last year cost about 40m for the regular area normal size chamber. That is aside the finishing ie tomb stones etc.
Vaults and gardens Ikoyi.

In African tradition we believe in reincarnation and we have seen it happen many times.

Regardless of what science claims, we still see newborns bearing birthmarks from a previous life and some children even recall where they once lived and who they were before death.

Deceased relatives are buried within the family compound so they may return and be reborn into the same bloodline — that's only if they had lived an honorable life. Those who brought shame, committed crimes or tarnished the family’s name are thrown into the evil forest to prevent them the chance to reincarnate within the family and serve as a lesson for the living.

Almost every households, communities are doing this, it has become not only a habit but culture, for people burying the dead in their households.

There are designated places for burying the dead, like the cemetery, or graveyard.
Some religious bodies or churches have burial grounds in their surroundings specifically for burying the dead.

What do you think make people prefer burying the dead in their houses or compounds?
Las las when the shidren need better money...dem go uproot them still go that cemetery

Its cultural in some places where men are buried inside the house (not just compound). It is considered disrespect for a successful man to be buried outside his house.
In some other, the cost of burial site may not be affordable.

Because before “civilization” came to Nigeria and we started having cemeteries, people did die and were buried. Every tribe and culture had a way of doing it. Bad person ➡️ Evil forest straight. Good person ➡️ In the vicinity of the home.

It’s a surprise that they don’t haunt new owners who later purchased the house. My Neighbor that completed his house never knew someone was buried in that land till date.

Just to lay claim on the land it's buried.

Semi related but with billions of people dead n buried. The earth is supposed to be covered up with bones

Where are all the deadbodies?
No new cemetery built
The current/old ones still have spaces
Population of people who buries in cemetery is more than the people who bury at home
Very valid question . I also thought about the wood used for burials if they are truly necessary . Because to me they are a waste of resources . I think most burial grounds are reusable after a while . Only the burial places of the high and mighty are kept for way longer . By the 2nd-3rd generation of most regular family , no one will truly care about what happened to the bones or even know the burial places . I don’t know where the burial place of my great great grandparents are. I doubt most people do . And that is what will happen to every one of us . In fact I am leaning more towards cremation when I pass .

I won't allow my parents to be buried far away from where we can see them regularly. Some parents are gods.
Some religion people will tell you it's wrong to burry at home but their parents is not buried at the cemetery including their prophets.
Same way you we become after our time on Earth here . We ought to live with all uprightness and honesty.

You said something here which I find very funny. You said: "It has become not only a habit but culture, for people burying the dead in their households."

You made it sound like cemetery burials are the regular norm, while household burials are the new trend. It is actually the other way around. Household burials has not become any habit or culture. It WAS always the way we did it. It is cemetery burials that are becoming a habit among some urbanized people.
