Obasanjo: I'm Getting Closer To Departure Lounge by Biodun556(op): 12:05pm On Aug 25, 2025
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he was in a hurry to see Nigeria attain its potential for greatness, stressing that he is now “getting close” to his departure lounge.

Obasanjo made the remark while reflecting on his years in public service and his new book, ‘Nigeria: Past and Future,’ where he assessed Nigeria’s leadership trajectory and criticised both past and present administrations.

According to him, his writings and interventions over the years have not been borne out of animosity but out of a desire to see that Nigeria progress.

So sad,can bear to lose such a great leader and a good man who cared/is still caring for a nation.

Rest on great-grandpa.

See on the other side.

That's right...

I was watching his podcast recently and couldn't help thinking the same.

Unfortunate he might never see Nigeria get better.

He was one of the greatest leaders Nigeria ever had though. I can see how passionately he sometimes speaks about a better Nigeria.

Dude did his best as president but somehow the trajectory of progress after his tenure was diverted by those after him. Instead of building on what progress was made under him

It's unfortunate we now find ourselves in the situation where we presently are in!

Go and read and watch about his time as president. No be everything be Cho Cho Cho. Almost all the systems we have in Nigeria today were set up during his time.

Obasanjo really meant well for Nigeria. If he has had his way with 3rd term maybe, just maybe Nigeria would not have been where it is

No president has been able to surpass his achievements

I remember, he would be hosted in a live phone in program where anyone can ask him anything about the country and he had good answers to give.

He knew so much about the nation

Keke, cheap telecommunications boast , debt forgiveness were all orchestrated by his administration

By the way

Seun, why did u stop the 40 character thing

Pairing Yar Adua and GEJ was his greatest undoing in terms of a successor plan but then what were his options? Odili was one of the hopeful, but to me not a good choice, Donald Duke was another hopeful, but being from the South, replacing another southerner was not going to work and Obj knew that.

Next was Atiku but he had fallen out of favor so Obj was not going to support him. I cannot remember who the nortrhers that were in conntensions were but for some weird reason, he went to recruit Yar Adua who was not even nursing any ambition and not particularly impressive as a governor. of Katstina state.

Yaradua was a good man, not a tribalistic and was fair to everyone. There was no fantastic governor those days especially from the north unlike now. He was also looking for someone who is not corrupt.

He may have been a good man, but with due respect to him, there were question marks about his credentials as a leader. It was in his time we were hearing 8 point agenda. What many young people do not realize is that there were a lots of complain about his leadership style and people were saying he should reduce the 8 point agenda to 1 since it was looking like he was overwhelmed.

Maybe reducing fuel price is what you like about him, it was a populist move but on the long run was a bad move. CAnceling the sale of the refineries was another major bad thing. Then the investment in the power sector which they prematurely began to probe is why we are still where we are in terms of power.

The power plants that were coming into the country were abandoned at the ports because there was no more funding to get them out and continue with the power plan.

GEJ just came and decided that looting was what he should be remembered for

No funding to clear NIGERIA power plants in NIGERIA ports. Do you truly believe that bobo ? Oga Obasanjo should bless us with billions and bail us out of his way out. Not that in spirit he will be wiring us small small money every 4yrs like Abacha our Sugar Daddy.

If the budget to pay contractors who already financed the importation is stop, then yes there will be no funds to clear them.

Obj has done his part, he has no stipends like 'sugar daddy' tp give

Now that you know, isn't it time to give your life to the Lord Jesus Christ while there's still time?

God is no respecter of persons, if Jesus Christ isn't your saviour and you leave this world, it's hell fire straight.

Only Jesus can Save

Thief Obasanjo should stop talking nonsense he had 8 good years to develop Nigeria and he practically destroyed the country.
Almost all our major challenges as a country originated from his presidency.

Obj has never spoken about this, at least not to my knowledge, but it was the complaint by those who know about power around that 2008 period.

The probe itself was probably well-intentioned but the approach is stopping the ship that had already sailed was a bad move. To be fair to Yar Adua, it was the Senate that was mostly responsible for that.

All the Ghana must go flying around in those days and the bloated pay for politicians that originally start with 1999 did what for the polity?

yaradua was picked to compensate his brother shehu that died when they were incarcerated n also to please his region.

I pity those who believe obj meant well for Nigeria, he picked 2 puppet that will b easy for him to control.

Yaradua was a very gentle man who even made his clear the election that brought him in was rigged, and u should observe Jonathan too he was also a gentle person

Obj picked 2 gentle men whom he could control

Lol at OBJ in a hurry to see Nigeria attain its potential for greatness. What a classic joke.
He was president when UAE was building Dubai Mall, Dubai Metro, Burj Khalifa. He had 8 years as civilian president and about 3years as military president. He even lobbied a 3rd term. He and Atiku built personal farms, universities and other businesses instead and like Obi 'saved' money. Imagine your dad saving money when you were supposed to be in school.

dubai Metro started construction 2006.
Cost: ≈ US $7.6 billion

Burj Khalifa started construction 2004.
Cost: ≈ US $1.5 billion

dubai Mall started construction 2004.
Cost: ≈ US $1.2 billion

(Before you say maybe money no dey) Obasanjo government had committed approximately US $16 billion to electricity with nothing to show. You can guess where the money went.
It was the same period that they sold PHCN and NITEL. Please, don't tempt the truth.
