That rant from Taribo was unnecessary. People are here attacking the government because of their hatred of the government. Taribo was just being stupidly emotional. If Rufai asked for assistance in their WhatsApp group, he should not use it to make mouth. After all, people in my WhatsApp group, especially, Old students association, do request for assistance from members of the group that are better off. Adorning your country's national Jersey is a privilege and not a right, neither is it a favour to your country. The Nigerian State owe you nothing as a sports person after your retirement. As long as you got your reward and pay while in active service to your nation, you have no case against your country if you later went broke in life.

Is it all their old players that they employ and rehabilitate?

Have you heard of O J Simpson? etc

The majority of the key staffs under Ministry of Sports were old players and Athlets.

But to expect that they will all be employed and treated the same is to live in a dream world.

They were well paid during their playing days, by the govt and their clubs. It is their responsibility to plan and save for their old age.

Anything the govt gives is just a bonus.

It is a sad matter that our heros past are poor and cant seem to fend for themselves in their retirement. However, it is also important that Footballers understand that the Nation doesn't owe them anything after the match bonuses and other allowances they earned while playing.
Yes, they made us proud while they wore the green and white, and we are thankful for that, but they cannot pretend they did not gain anything from it. The profile of an international in a foreign club is much higher than that of a player who is not playing for his national team. so they also gained a lot from it then.

Of course, from a perspective of compassion, there is nothing wrong with the NFF or other state FAs, paying final respects to a hero by supporting his family during his funeral, but it is really not an obligation.
Every Nigerian whether footballer, basketballer, soldier or trader has an obligation to invest his earnings well and manage his expenses to ensure he can live in relative comfort though the rest of his natural life. It cannot be different for anyone.
I hope this unfortunate business will serve as a lesson not only to the young footballers still in active service, but also to every young man or women currently enjoying good cashflows today.
