One Dies In Garki, Abuja Building Collapse, Fire Service Issues Warning by BlackViper(op): 10:05pm On Aug 25, 2025
A building foundation has collapsed at an excavation site within Radio House, Area 8, Garki, Abuja, claiming the life of a 25-year-old man.

Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Monday, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) said its personnel from the National Headquarters promptly responded to a distress call on Sunday, August 24, 2025, when the incident occurred.

The National Public Relations Officer of the Service of the FFS, DCF PO Abraham, who confirmed the incident, said rescue teams recovered the victim’s body from the rubble and handed it over to his family.

The FFS, while expressing condolences to the bereaved family, stressed the urgent need for strict adherence to safety regulations while constructing buildings.

“The Federal Fire Service commiserates with the bereaved family and urges construction companies to strictly adhere to safety standards in order to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement said.

The incident added to the growing list of building collapses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in recent months.

In July 2025, a two-storey building under construction reportedly collapsed in the Gwarinpa area, leaving two workers dead and several others injured.

Similarly, in May 2025, a partially completed structure at Jabi District reportedly caved in during heavy rainfall, trapping construction workers before emergency responders could reach the site.

In March 2025, at least three people reportedly lost their lives in another building collapse in Kubwa, a satellite town in Abuja, raising renewed concerns about substandard construction practices and weak regulatory enforcement.

Urban development experts and civil society organisations have consistently raised alarm over the spate of collapses in Abuja, attributing them to poor engineering practices, use of substandard materials, and disregard for approved building plans.

Residents have urged the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and relevant regulatory bodies to intensify monitoring of construction projects and sanction erring developers.

The recent quest by the Federal Government that land lords should insure their buildings comes to mind. Insurance companies, would usually take stringent measures to ensure safety before insuring you because they won't want to run at a loss. Which is a plus to checkmating this disaster.

This is a very sad news. May the soul of the man who lost his life rest in peace.
Very sad one, I don't like hearing bad news, it hurt my feeling, may those who are injured receive fast healing, the project management check be investigated for substandard materials that might be used during construction, government need to do more in terms of supervising construction projects.

That's the ideal. But most people earn below 70k, especially teachers of private schools. How do you expect such humans to thrive?

Tinubu is a symbol of evil and bad events. He'll relocate to Iragbiji after 2027.

Nigeria need to create standards and create licensed professionals plus inspectors. License fees generate money, inspector licenses create jobs and ensure quality. Buildings are much safer as a result. Only licensed building inspectors can sign off on the construction. If they sign off on rubbish, they face jail time. I wonder what the standard board is doing? Just stealing money I guess.

In Nigeria NO safety rules apply to construction sites. U see carpenters on top of a three story building without protection, this is toooooooo bad. At d end da blame devil, while they them caused it

It appears that building collapses have moved from Lagos to Abuja because a certain fellow who purportedly built Lagos is now building Abuja!

Tenants pay for it. They will inflate the rent to meet the quota.

I want to ask... what is the duration(lifetime) of a building/house?
How many years will take for a house to be called an old and fragile building?

It depends on the structure of the building bro.
A good structured building could stay more than 50years. The world is evolving, developments and innovations can occur within this period for the building.

Wow.

I really appreciate.

I was thinking the lifespan of a building is 20yrs, and after that 20yr, it starts to deteriorate gradually.
