We should learn from other countries. Their footballers even pay their country's football association. It's truly disheartening that Nigerians lack a sense of patriotism in any form. Always want the government to take care of them, leaving 150 million in perpetual poverty. They spent their money on women and on an unnecessary show-off. Read about Etor and this guy from Senegal, even George Weah of Liberia. I think the government resources should be used to take care of the less privileged and the poor, not the privileged ones

these retired footballers after their retirement they can still go into other job opportunities in the football sector.. like football club coaching, football player agent, football TV media presenter, football analysist, football journalist, football administrator, CAF officials, FIFA officials and administrator, football club scouts, advertisements and endorsements and many other jobs in the football sector to make themselves busy and earn more money and enrich themselves the more..there are some retired football players that are doing this jobs now and making more money and not depending on their government for help or financial assistance

They were paid each time they played for Nigeria. These ex-footballers feel entitled. You can’t blame the government for your wrong financial choices. FG has supported these guys in the past, let them rest

What world map? Was playing for Nigeria their full time job? You guys are outrageous. I have little pity for the ones that played in Europe. Imagine someone like Obafemi Martins (God forbid) going broke me you want me to pity him. Wake up abeg

How many games did they play for Nigeria compared to their clubs that Nigeria should fund them for life?

They played more for clubs than county

Sports, especially football, is a very short career. Irrespective of the amount of money earned within a career span, it can fizzle within fleeting moments. It was even far more difficult to have very good investment options in the 80s and 90s, unlike now. Even at that, things can go awry with one wrong decision. That said, some of the younger players then made very poor financial choices. Who would believe that Amokachie once owned an unneeded private jet?

This doesn't however negate that government and sports administrators ought to have an input on ex sportsmen welfare. If politicians who pilfer public funds at can attract government support even to the point of bankrolling their hospital bills and even burials, how much more our exsportmen who put smiles on our faces.

But Taribo didn't say he's broke na. Peter Rufai is the person in question.
I doubt he earned much, as he played for little clubs unlike the Okochas and Taribo wests.

And they played for the country free of charge?, dem no collect their bonuses?. Are you aware that they were paid in dollars?. Are civil servants being paid in dollars?. So after all that, Govt must take over their responsibility after retirement?. Is Nollywood actors not putting Nigeria on the map, how many artistes are crying to Govt after their career?. Abeg shift.
I ask same question, why do they think they deserve better than other Nigerians. Means wiskid and Burna who put Nigeria on the international stage should be government responsibility too

Nollywood actors and local musicians will soon be asking Government for retirement benefits too. They may even ask Govt to take over the responsibility of their kids after retirement. Were Taribo and his colleagues owed their bonuses whenever they come home to play during their active years?. If only you knew how powerful these players were during their playing days. That's why I really love what the President is doing, make sure their bonuses and rewards are given to them now, let them do whatever they want with it, so that when they retire, they won't have any entitlement mentality.
Bros some politicians are still collecting retirement benefits after stealing all our tax money.
Do u know what most of these footballers went through before they can travel out of the country?
Some countries erect statues for their heroes but our we prefer to honor our politicians than those that makes the country proud.
Make una the reason oooo

Re: Taribo West’s Salary In 1999 Emerges After Criticising FG For Abandoning Rufai by Amarachieze(m): 3:19am On Aug 26, 2025
Very petty and a distraction from the main issue. So Taribo should use his savings for Rufai's burial? The issue is more of insensitivity on the part of government and the football body. Ex-politicians that received state burials, what was their salary or is it because they were broke? By the way, how much did the FGN spend on Buhari's burial, a man that inflicted pains and promoted bigotry in Nigeria. And does it mean his family couldn't have successfully buried him?

Where did they get the figure from?
Jaap Stam became the most expensive player in football history in 1998 when he transferred from PSV to Man Utd and the total fee was £10.6m.
I just checked. Taribo's movement to Inter from Auxerre was €3m in 1997 so how is he able to be earning over half of his transfer fee every year? That's a big fat lie
Transfer fee is a one off payment to the selling club, in certain instances the player might get a cut, it has no bearing at all in the salary a player can negotiate with the buying club.

Not is agreement with TARIBO..imagine if in the future OSIMHEN family starts asking for support for burial after collecting millions of dollars and buying fast cars..some players actually give to the community financial aids but they should apply sense...those days imagine if he bought lots of lands and invested in businesses.

Re: Taribo West’s Salary In 1999 Emerges After Criticising FG For Abandoning Rufai by wacuc0: 4:30am On Aug 26, 2025
Transfer fee has nothing to do with salary. Transfer fee is buying over a contract from an existing one and it goes mainly to the club not players. You can be bought for 1m dollars or even a free transfer if your contract is finished and got paid millions of dollars. Messi got a free transfer and is earning big. Same for most of the players in Saudi Arabia earning big. Buying of players is the business of the club owners and directors, That is how they make their money.
