Greetings guys.
So I just got a new high end gaming laptop yesterday and would love to start a new journey in cyber security.
I'm currently a practising architect and intend to combine and dedicate some free time to the learning.
Please I'd love any tips and guidance or the possibility to network with people who are into the field already so as to get good information and guidance.
Please note that I don't have any prior knowledge on anything programming before now.

Start with giving us the tips you created to start. I can’t buy a laptop with the aim to learn typing and have no prior plan.

I already said I don't know anything about it sir.

Since you said you are just starting out, I will assume you have no basic knowledge about how computers work in general, I will say you start with CompTIA A+, it will teach you the very basics - I'm not asking you to do the certification.

Also start learning any 1 or 2 programming languages of your choice - if you want to start with python, you can try angela yu 100 days python challenge it's a good course for beginners.

You also need basic windows & linux administrative knowledge, you can start with installing the OS on a VM then learning basic task like configuring a server, running a cron job ...

Learn Computer Networking and it's use, have an understanding on concepts like IP address, Network Subnetting and calculation, knowing different IP ranges, the OSI and TCP/IP model, Port numbers and their functions.

That is the beginning phase, with the little knowledge you've gained, i believe you will be able to figure which cybersecurity domain you want to focus on then continue from there.

These are just basic stuff anyone just starting out needs to know, there is still pretty much alot you need to learn

-i- Study and understand the CompTIA A+ (Core 1 and Core 2) curriculum, but don't take the exam

-ii- Study and understand the CompTIA Network + curriculum, but don't take the exam

-iii- Understand, install and get familiar with any distribution of Linux.

-iv- Study, understand and take the CompTIA Security + certification exam

-v- Get hands on experience in an IT workplace and gain familiarity with networking equipment (preparing for the CCNA exam with practice labs gives an immersive experience of working with switches and routers, albeit using Cisco devices)

OP follow this advice from RubiesBanking.
Stick to the basics until you get a hang on it...TCP/IP, Linux OS/Linux command line, Python (widely used in InfoSec) /Bash/Powershell etc.

I’ve been testing my own network stack under heavy traffic, and using an ip booter for controlled load tests gave me a clearer picture of weak spots without digging through logs or juggling tools. The automated API made it easy to script repeats, and paying with crypto kept things simple. The low‑latency setup really helped me pinpoint issues fast.

The advice from RubiesBanking and SUPREMOTM is solid — that's basically the right sequence.

One thing worth adding once you get through the basics: TryHackMe and HackTheBox are excellent platforms for hands-on practice. TryHackMe specifically has guided beginner paths and you don't need to be at any advanced level to start — there are rooms built entirely for people new to the field. It gives you a safe lab environment to actually try attacks and defenses without needing your own setup.

Also as an architect, your structured thinking and eye for detail will serve you better in this field than most people expect. Cybersecurity rewards methodical people.

Watch Network+ videos to understand networks then, some web programming videos to understand basic web development and hosting then learn NMAP to know how to find system and web vulnerabilities.
