Very deceptive thread. They calculated without tax removal. Lol. And that was per annum. Remove tax and see what's left. Lol. Very funny people.

Taribo was the under paid in his club. He was cheated badly but endured. Jay Jay was paid peanut compared to the talent he has. He was in the same class with Rohaldinho. He was too good.

People still don't get it. Peter Rufai did not ask anyone for 1 kobo. NFF did not know about his illness sef. And it was a long term thing. The mistake I can say he did was that he didn't get pali of another country where he can access better health care at a cheaper cost. Peter spent all his money on his sickness na. Yet, he asked no one...one kobo. He didn't expect his family to ask anyone for his burial as I believe he would want a queit one. Na him family wan cash put asking for help. Person no ask help for his treatment, but family go.ask for money after he died.

And Taribo is right. NFF is useless. Yes, they should help the family. Did Rufai ask for help when he was alive? Nope. So, he is right. NFF is useless.

Peter might not want a big burial, but he was a legend. He should be buried quietly. That was our number 1 na. Rufai. The excellent goal keeper. Too good in his days. When we won the nations cup, Pele picked two Nigerian excellent players. Guess who they are: Jay Jay and Rufai. Respect this man.

Transfer fee has nothing to do with salary. Transfer fee is buying over a contract from an existing one and it goes mainly to the club not players. You can be bought for 1m dollars or even a free transfer if your contract is finished and got paid millions of dollars. Messi got a free transfer and is earning big. Same for most of the players in Saudi Arabia earning big. Buying of players is the business of the club owners and directors, That is how they make their money.
I know all that. What I'm pointing out is the level of wages and fees in football at that time. If the most expensive player could be just £10.5m, that tells you that football fees and wages were not as humongous in volume as we have them now. A situation where a player is bought for cheap or free and paid huge sums occurs when a players is almost at the end of his contract. His wages at his previous club will determine how much he's earning in the new club. But in a situation where a player has substantial number of years, his wages will directly affect the transfer fees

Transfer fee is a one off payment to the selling club, in certain instances the player might get a cut, it has no bearing at all in the salary a player can negotiate with the buying club.
Present wages determine transfer fees

Let’s be real—money was never the problem. Even if the country paid him millions, it wouldn’t have changed a thing because he lacked financial discipline. Look at Mikel, Okocha, Musa—none of them were in the world’s top earners, yet they secured their futures. He had the same chance but blew it. Stop dragging the government into what was clearly a personal failure.

Na players that just played just on their off period during their career for Nigeria was paid a 100 times more than an average earning in the country for just that, they made more than a thousand times more than an average earning in the country in their career days but squandered it, we still carry our budget go settle first? We should all pardon Taribo West for his stupidity.
They were paid weekly at their various clubs in either pounds or Dollars weekly.
Apart from Endorsement and other benefits.
Back to Nigeria context, The get paid after each matches played for Representing Nigeria.
The set of Those that won Olympic gold medal were paid also apart from bonus received from FIFA and European football bodies.
Majority of them earned over 1 billion Naira just few years.
But their reckless lifestyle affected them expecting FG to also shoulder their days of retirement.
As a civil servant, after my retirement I can never get paid 30million or given accommodation for free if not something extra ordinary happens at the cause of my duty.
Taribo West goofed big time.
It should be a lesson for other footballers spending recklessly now
Less I forget, the Falcons were also paid 165millon each apart from accommodation given to them.

Imagine making minimum of 10 million naira every month for like 8 to 12 years plus other bonuses and allowance as a professional footballer, then later blaming the government for failing to use your money well many years later

oga why Okocha mentioned in the paper and likes of Kanu no go broke? Why are they still billionaires?.... stop defending nonsense...#193m yearly in 1999, I guess u be genz tho,not to know how huge that was in 99..evn now more than 70% of Nigerians won't make up to #50m in their entire life time, and u here creating nonsense excuses for someone that earned 193m yearly, excluding bonuses and money earned from brands in 99😱
My dad in 1997 sold his land in Dideolu estate in Ogba then for 1.7m. Today, that land is worth 150m.

In 1999 if I'm correct, land in Lekki Phase 1 was 2m. Today, an average plot there is 1bn. One could get plots of land in Sangotedo in 2003 for 450k per plot. Land there is now at least 40m.

In Ikate in 1999, land in Ikate was around 200k some claim. Today, it is 300m.

I would advise footballers to live on 20% of their post tax income. So, if a player is earning $50,000 a week, after tax, he might be left with $20,000.

Live on 20% of that which is $4,000. If you think it's small, increase it to 30%, or $6,000 a week. Save 10% which is $2,000 a week. The remainder which is 60% or $12,000, invest it into businesses that have a 90% or higher success rate such as property.

Even if one decides to build block of flats in Lagos with the money, that's about N1bn a year of property. Over 10 years, that's 10bn. The income from that a year would be around 400m as rent which is $250k a year, or about $5,000 a week. This is a worst case scenario.

Also, building property to rent out in Nigeria is probably the least profitable way to money in real estate.

There are relatively safe way out there to invest ones money.

They were paid for their services for both club n Country

My dad's salary in 1997 was 5,000. In 1999 after Abdulsalam Abubakar raised salaries some months back in 1998, it went up to N10,000.

These footballers need to tell us what they do with their money.

Peter Rufai held a Masters degree and played in Europe for a long time after his stint with Dragons of Benin Republic. I doubt he was financially handicapped.

The NFF will always defend itself. The way it treats players & coaches generally is not commendable. Sometimes allowances are not paid & coaches emoluments are delayed.

You've a point. Some Nigerian footballers in the desperation to play abroad signed ridiculous contracts that enslaved them. A lot of the retired players are not doing well & some were bankrupt. In England professional players have a contributory pension fund which manages players funds & pay them wages on retirement.

Please let use our head to reason and talk even in Europe football players are being honored treated specially even in their old age in respective of how much they earn when they where active, why is African case always different I think because of greed and wickedness ,let not forget in Europe countries footballers are being showed respect after their passing ,you see minute of silence in the stadium and brief history about them but here in Nigeria and African nobody gives a dime ,saying Taribo West earned more than 100 billion is ridiculous because the figure meant be high do you remove tax from it ,do you remove expenses from it ,what about family members support and the community he came from please let us not george like that if you could remember very well the cost of malt in 2020 was 200 naira check the price nah it's more than double as of today .

Can that be said about Nigeria??

If not that our talents run to Europe to Garner some sort of experience, do you even think we would be regarded as a footballing nation??

Can you count five players that were home based that made it to the apex of their career??

My brother no get me wrong. I remain correct guy to those wey know me well.

And realistically, do you think it's advisable to do anything without benefiting one's self?

That's where Fashola remains different in all governors across Nigeria.

See, even in China, during their early development. Embezzlement was frowned upon. Everyone worked to the betterment of the nation even to the level of provincial leaders but you think no one did anything for their own benefits?

Whatever benefits mean to anyone, when the common goal remains to make the country better, it'll rise.

This is my belief. As I find true and total altruism as a farce and deceit.

Some people even just want a good word to their names...( That's benefits too)

So my brother, I no know how best to explain my mind on the matter but I hope this small talk wey I talk go clear you on what I really meant by that comment.
