Most of us grew up thinking the bananas we eat today are 100% natural fruits. Sweet, soft, and seedless. But here’s the twist — the original wild bananas didn’t look or taste like what we enjoy now. 🍌 The Wild Bananas The first bananas that grew in the wild were full of big, hard seeds. They were smaller, less sweet, and not as “friendly” to eat. 🍌 How We Got Today’s Bananas Through centuries of selective breeding, humans picked and replanted bananas that had fewer seeds, softer flesh, and sweeter taste. Over time, that’s how we arrived at the modern banana we know today. 🍌 So, Are They Artificial? Not really. Today’s bananas are natural but modified by humans through traditional farming methods, not chemicals or labs. It’s like how farmers cross-breed plants or animals to bring out the best traits. 🍌 Do Wild Bananas Still Exist? Yes! In some tropical regions (like Southeast Asia and parts of Africa), you can still find wild bananas with seeds. But they aren’t widely cultivated because people prefer the sweet, seedless ones. So next time you peel a banana, just know you’re holding the product of thousands of years of human selection. Sweet, soft, and seedless — but very different from the original. cc: nlfpmod

success1smyn:Those are wild bananas. Human's did not create the version of bananas we commonly eat. It's equally from nature, however a result of NATURAL MUTATION which is healthy. It wasn't modified. It was just that farmers over the years found natural agricultural ways to grow them. Nothing was genetically modified about it. |

damosky12:Exactly 👌 You’re right — humans didn’t “manufacture” bananas in a lab. The ones we eat today came from natural mutations that made some bananas sweeter and with fewer seeds. Farmers just helped the process by selective breeding — planting and replanting those naturally occurring varieties until they became the common banana we all know today. So it’s not “artificial” in the sense of GMOs or lab-made fruits, but rather a cultivated natural variety. Nature gave the mutation, humans nurtured it. 🍌✨ |

One key thing about the bananas we eat today is that they cannot grow from seeds. This is because they are mostly triploid hybrids (having three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two). That condition makes them sterile — so even though you sometimes see tiny black dots inside, those are just undeveloped seed traces, not functional seeds. The wild bananas (with large, hard seeds) reproduce naturally by seed, but the edible ones we eat are propagated through vegetative means (suckers, offshoots, or tissue culture). So in short, the very same mutation that gave us soft, seedless, sweet bananas also made them unable to reproduce naturally. Farmers step in to “clone” the plants so we can keep enjoying them. |

delugadou:the cassava we eat today has been modified to be resistant to pests and to increase since the 1980s. The beans we eat in Nigeria from 2019-2020 has been modified. Tomatoes, bell pepper and corn same thing. Companies selling GMO patented seeds have been operating in Nigeria for long. An example is seedco in Abuja and maina seeds kano. Universities like UI and abu have been able to produce modified seeds . Nigerians are only shouting now because bloggers are using it to farm engagement/ traffic https://allianceforscience.org/blog/2021/10/nigeria-welcomes-gmo-cowpea/

success1smyn:It's not artificial. Not in the slightest. There are ways some if our farmers grow crops today in Nigeria to be larger. No chemical, just minor positions hacks. |

success1smyn:GMO companies and pushing these lying so you can believe it is okay for modify farm products for better nutrition and taste. There was no time that banana was like that. It's all manipulative lies. |

TheBillyonaire:Lolz, you are very wrong sir/ma. This is not GMO but selective breeding by farmers over thousand of years. Seun, nlfpmod, I think this is front page worthy. |

success1smyn:Not true. That picture has been circulating in the wild for a while now. May be you are getting to see it now, have seen them years now. |

There's a similar situation with Corn. Corn was originally a grass till humans made it what it is today. Corn is entirely man made food. |

Ah! Thank God o, and God bless everyone who contributed in modifying it to get rid of the seeds. We are not monkeys now. Please anyone caught still cultivating the wild ones should be arrested immediately. It's my favourite fruit ke! |

But oga, banana comes in different sizes o. We have the fat ones, long ones, tiny ones. Were they all with seeds? I've forgotten their botanical names now |
