Why are women underrepresented in software development?

This is a rhetorical question. Putting the question in other words, "with great successes recorded by women in the software development field, why is there not an influx of women in this lucrative field?"

Yes, women are doing well, but there are misrepresentations of the profession that keep many women out: narrations like the gender stereotype - it is a male-based role.

Ada Lovelace, the world's first computer programmer, was a woman. Since then, we've got women like Grace Hopper, a pioneer in computer programming who created the first compiler and contributed to the COBOL programming language.

So, women; this is your field, own it!

In modern society we also have several women that are taking giant strides in this noble industry.

Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com ) has also had its fair share of female alumni who have gone on to make their mark in the profession. Among them are:

Mariam Adedeji- Senior Application Engineer at Sourcegraph, UK (2017 Set)

Jane Ihenacho - Software Engineering Manager at FairMoney (2019 Set)

Naheema Adeleke- Frontend Solutions Engineer at AgileRL, UK (2020 Set)

Motunrayo Ogunyemi - Software Engineer at Bloomberg, UK (2021 Set)

Adefisayo Adeniji – Software Engineer at StanbicIBTC ( 2022 Set)

Aishat Moshood - Software Engineer at PalmPay(2022 Set)

Haishat Ibrahim - Software Engineer at Fincra (2022 Set)

Ize Majebi - Software Developer at IGT, Canada (2022 Set)

Victoria Umoh - Backend developer at ZetivaHR (2023 set)

Jimoh Rukayat - Software Developer at Uniswitch (2024 Set)

Agu Racheal – Web Developer at Nile Technologies (2024 Set)

Adedolapo Adeshina - Full-stack Developer at KPIE ( 2024 Set)

Mary Adekunle - Cloud Application Developer at Signal Alliance Consulting (2025 Set)

She started her professional career working as an Application Developer at Upperlink Limited. There, she created critical applications for organizations like Babcock University, ESUT Business School, and LCCI, to name a few.

Abiola has developed and patented a software product, Customer Management and Self-Service software which integrated some leading accounting software.

She was mentored and trained by the global leader in Cyber Security -Symantec Corporation at their headquarters in California USA. She is passionate about impacting knowledge into others.

In one of her songs, Beyoncé asks: "Who runs the world?"

Women are not innovative. Always doing what has already been done. Creative energy and sexual energy are similar

Wonderful, this is an encouragement to our ladies to explore the world of programming. It's so flexible and versatile that you can't even know everything. It's also so rewarding and highly lucrative.

Not only you, ai can do almost everything now, all you just need to have knowledge of what you want do with it. Without learning code, I made a discord chat bot using the code I generated from chatgpt and it worked perfectly well

That’s a lie, anyone can go to school mostly now that government is paying for your school fees and still give you 20k monthly stipends. Nothing like school bro.

impressive but AI is becoming a threat to software developers.
Re: See Women Doing Great In Software Development – Sure, You Too Can by koladata(m): 11:37am On Aug 27, 2025
AI mainly threatens entry-level software development roles. The real challenge is how new developers can transition to senior-level positions when entry-level opportunities are scarce. This scarcity also makes senior roles more competitive. Software development still favors those who have been in the field for years, but for newcomers, it requires going the extra mile to stand out and progress.

AI can write snippets for you, but it can’t handle some advance software coding, like performance optimization, load balancing, message brokers, dependency injection, advanced stored procedures etc. Even if AI gives you code, you still need to know where and how to apply it. I’ve been 10X faster with AI, it still hallucinates and won’t replace deep engineering skills. Without experience, you won’t know how to use it effectively
