Enugu Revives NIGERGAS Industry After Decades Of Collapse by Editorialtimes(op): 7:11pm On Aug 28, 2025
By Safiyat Muhammed | Enugu

Enugu State has recorded another milestone as Governor Peter Mbah on Thursday commissioned the revived NIGERGAS Company, decades after the once-thriving industry went moribund.

NIGERGAS: From Eastern Pride to Abandonment

Established in 1962 under Premier Dr. Michael Okpara, in partnership with an Italian firm, NIGERGAS was a household name across Nigeria. The company produced acetylene, nitrogen, and medical oxygen, which were widely supplied to hospitals and industries nationwide.

However, years of neglect led to a total breakdown of the facility, leaving a critical gap in the supply of medical oxygen and industrial gases.

The Road to Revival

The journey to recovery began in April 2024, when the Enugu State Executive Council approved funds for a full overhaul of the plant. On Thursday, Governor Peter Mbah officially cut the ribbon, signaling the rebirth of the industry.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Governor said the revival of NIGERGAS aligns with his administration’s vision to position Enugu among the top three economies in Nigeria.

Economic Impact and Industrial Boost

With its revitalization and technological upgrade, NIGERGAS is expected to:

Bridge supply gaps in Nigeria’s health and industrial sectors

Create jobs for skilled and unskilled workers in the state

Boost internally generated revenue for Enugu State

This development comes barely a week after the Governor also commissioned the refurbished Hotel Presidential in Enugu, further showcasing his administration’s commitment to economic growth.

Governor Peter Mbah is by far the best governor of Nigeria (among his class of 2023). You see this moniker, I hardly praise politicians, but you see that man, others need to learn leadership from him.

He has been outstanding in governance probably because he's a thoroughbred private oil/gas player. His plan is to rocket Enugu's GDP from $4 billion to $30 billion. Dude has an audacious ambition.

The only governor that has taste for quality east of the Niger. Check what he's doing and compare to that of prof.

If this’ll happen, the day it will happen, marks the beginning of great rebirths and rebounds of industralization in the south-east/south-China’s strategy of development.A day God will be pleased, actually looking forward to that day.

I pray he remains focused, of recent the worst thing to ever happen to mankind has been doing everything possible for him to decamp

Governor Mbah did what gburugburu couldn't do in 8 years in 1 year. He executes projects as though it's his personal investment...

That thing is not a big deal. Tinubu will stop nothing if proposed. We just don't have creative leaders. The governor of Ebonyi State would rather build flyovers where they are completely unnecessary than revive moribund industries through PPP arrangements. Tinubu may not be perfect, but he's obviously open to ideas that will move the country forward.

The Best thing is to bring in the private sector to buy a stake in the company. If not, another governor will get there tomorrow and spoil everything again like before

Great one from Peter Mba, the man has truly convinced me even though he came into power through the backdoor. That's what many expected from Tinupoo but the man fell flat after grabbing power grin
