Dino Melaye Faces Criminal Prosecution Over Failure To Pay Personal Income Tax by Mynd44(mod): 5:51am On Aug 29, 2025
Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has been summoned to court over alleged failure to pay his mandatory Personal Income Tax for 2023 and 2024, as well as underpayment of taxes in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

A criminal summons, dated August 21, 2025, was issued by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court, requiring Melaye to appear before the Magistrate Court at Wuse Zone II, Abuja, on September 5, 2025.

According to the FCT Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Melaye only paid N85,000.08 in 2019, N100,000.08 in 2020, N120,000 in 2021, and N1,000,000 in 2022, despite declaring much higher annual incomes.

It revealed that for instance, in 2022, he declared an annual income of over N6.5 million.

It was revealed that an administrative assessment for 2023 and 2024 was issued on May 23, 2025, but when Melaye failed to respond within 30 days, a notice of best judgment assessment was issued on June 23, 2025.

DAILY POST reports that attempts to deliver the notice personally or to his representative were unsuccessful, prompting the IRS to paste it on the gate of his residence in Maitama, Abuja, on July 9, 2025.

The notice outlined that Melaye’s total tax liabilities for 2023 and 2024 were assessed at N234,896,000.00 and N274,712,000.00, respectively.

The notice read; “Despite reminders and ample time provided, your non-compliance with Section 41 of the Act constitutes a breach of your obligations. Consequently, the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has, in accordance with Section 54(3) of the Personal Income tax act, proceeded to raise a Best of Judgment Assessment in respect of your tax liabilities for the years under review.

“Accordingly, your tax liability has been assessed in the sum of N234,896,000.00 and N274,712,000.00 for the period of 2023 and 2024 respectively. The computation and assessment are attached for your action. Please note that the Service has also identified income under declaration and under payment for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 years of assessment, during which payment of N1,000,000.00, N120,000.00 and N100,000.00 were made respectively. Notices of additional will be issued, upon conclusion of our review.

“Your are hereby informed that you have the right to object to this assessment within thirty (30) days from the date of receipt of this notice. Any objection must clearly state the grounds of your objection and be substantiated with relevant supporting documents.

“Failure to make payment or file objection within the stipulated period will result in the assessment being deemed final and conclusive, and recovery proceedings will be initiated without further notice,” the FCT IRS stated

Melaye, a former member of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, also served as chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT and briefly chaired the Senate Committee on Aviation.

He was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the November 11, 2023, Kogi State governorship election.

Dino Melaye the money man. His Tax alone should be able to power the budget of Kogi state for at least 3 months.

That guy balls really hard. I wonder where he makes his money from since he's been out of office.

He declared personal income of 6.5 million naira in 2022, but by some stroke of magic his taxes for the very next year skyrocketed to over 230 million naira, how😂?

Did he gross personal income of over a billion naira the very next year to have attracted such a humongous annual tax?

He has been extra vocal in the political space lately, so Gbajabiamila and Wike have opened his book of retribution😭.

Not only him there are many who also don't pay and if they pay grossly underpay.

As a matter of fact, many Politicians underpay. Their Tax Filings and Returns are only done randomly and by guess work. Most times they only apportion what they feel and just pay.
Re: Dino Melaye Faces Criminal Prosecution Over Failure To Pay Personal Income Tax by emkz: 6:16am On Aug 29, 2025
Quite unlike Dino Melaye, he has not released a skit to explain himself away or behave like a sick person as he did when police barricaded his house when he refused to honour their invitation and eventually started acting film when they cut water and electricity to his house.

While making skits, he didn't realize he was under house arrest.

I think this story highlights how the "wealthy" game the system. Dino declared less than what he earned to evade taxes. He forgets that funds flowed to his bank accounts which can be traced as legitimate income. I suggest he pays because it is a fine or appeals.

With the fine, the Nigerian Electoral Laws effectively rules him out for presenting himself for elections.

So he can earn from our tax and flaunt it online, but won't pay tax. How can he be paying such a meagre sum as tax? That is criminal, yet he goes around with police escorts paid with our taxes.
The amount I pay as tax annually, I should be getting a salute and "thank you sir" at every checkpoint if Dino pays this little.

Look let's be serious in this country....it is not possible in anyway that Dina Melaye (or any forever politician in Nigeria) would have an income of only N6.5m in any year for the past 16 years.

This is the same period in which the former governor of his state paid all his children (and some just newly born) school fees hurriedly in one year from nursery to secondary for over $10m (you can convert it to naira, I cannot be bothered). That N6.5m in one year is probably less than what Atiku's driver earns now, so please let us be serious in this country.

If we were in the USA that you all sing about, all that matters is he is living beyond his"stated" means, no one cares whether he is opposition or Mother Theresa.

Go and read about how almost a 100 years ago the USA was unable to pin murders and other crimes on most Mafia kingpins and started to ensure they used tax evasion crimes to lock them up for 30 or more years. This is the way America sanitized their society and ensured they put the mafia into check till today.

If we were in Nigeria you people will be making noise that is a mafioso suppose to pay taxes in the first place, while being kidnapped and dieing from their bullets and watching them spend their ill gotten wealth like Dina did on rendezvous with Roman Goddess.

A criminal is a criminal. When Tinubu or Wike are no longer in the seat of power, please someone should use the laws also on them.

How can distractions be distracted? Dino himself is a distraction. He has no real value on his own, except when he gets help or favour from stronger politicians. His constituency is on the Internet and his constituents are the followers of Tunde Ednut on Instagram.

If the IRS finds Dino wanting, the way to go is what they’ve done. Give him a notice and charge him to court.

Olayinka Lere committed an offense and he is liable to answer cases in court on how he got such sensitive and personal document to display online to the world. The IRS also has questions to answer on how such document was leaked to someone who is not their staff.

Can you imagine. Even with my 150k salary, I paid more than 85k as tax for the year.

Do you know how much our president pays for his tax, with his Bourdillon bullion vans oppression huh

The eyesore on Bourdillon Road
2nd January 2025

Beyond his neighbours, there is something about the sight of people hanging around a president’s residence that does not speak well of his leadership capabilities. Maybe no one has nudged him to see it, but the impression that spectacle on Bourdillon Road generates is that Tinubu enjoys the sight of suffering humans and thrives in—and through— their poverty.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”
