This is trump policy and not Nigeria mumu
Inflation rate in the US is single digit. It means nothing to them. The issue is here in Nigeria. 80 dollars in 2023 was N56,000. Today it is more than double that while value of the naira in real terms has halved making the real cost compared to 2023 equivalent to something like N170,000.

The problem is here and the problem is with this government's inability to stem inflation.

While you may argue that it comes from a recent U.S. Executive order that scrapped the duty-free exemption for lower-value shipments, and NIPOST is simply implementing it, applying a flat $80 fee hits ordinary Nigerians and small businesses the hardest. $80 charge on every US-bound parcel ls excessive.
It raises questions of fairness and proportionality. Why should someone sending a package worth $30 still pay $80 in “prepaid duty”? Policies like this stifle trade, discourage diaspora connections, and worsen inequality.
Global compliance is one thing, but punishing low-value senders is another. At the very least, there should be a tiered or value-based system instead of this blanket charge. I still say they are trying to make money off Nigerians on every opportunity and have no mercy for ordinary Nigerians
The question you should ask is,"who does all the $80 go to?"

If it all goes to the US government, then it's all good. If not, then why?

It's a stupid and wicked policy at the same time.

If you are retaliating, you should make it difficult for Americans or people in America to send to Nigeria and NOT the other way round.
The money probably goes to the US government.

The main objective is to stop Temu, shein, Ali express etc from flooding America with cheap inferior products from China.

It's a US policy.

The normal practice globally is that when small packages are sent through the post, the recipient country does not place an import tax on them. They enter duty free.

This may be because they may be gifts, product samples and so on, and would not make sense taxing them.

Trump has removed that exemption. The $80 will most likely all go to the US government.

And then? Simply put, Nigerians should stop sending packages to the US, simple, send if you are willing to pay $80.

Correct because it cannot be any other way. I engage in international trade so I am up to speed with regulations affecting our trading zone which includes USA.

De menimis exemption allowed good of value under $800.00 USD to enter the USA free of duty payment. Trump has now cancelled that meaning all good entering the USA now attracts duty payment.

Though a general policy, the ruling is primarily targeting China as Trump and his policymakers feel Chinese businesses and good are gaining too much penetration into the USA.

The reasoning is that Americans will look inwards for their purchase of goods if items below $800.00 USD, unlike before, now attract considerable import duty.

You are correct that it is receiver that must pay because it is duty owed to the USA Government by those in the USA who have bought goods from overseas. Meaning the $80.00 must be paid by the receiver of the goods in USA and not sender.

All VAT, Duty, taxes etc on goods are paid for by buyer/receiver of goods and not seller/sender of goods.

EU nation and other countries like India that stopped shipping to the US because of the ridiculous Trump policy nko? Is double digit inflation their problem too?

Nigeria should have stopped shipping too. It would have been better instead of irks like you crying over something your nation has no control over.

Nigerians should try DHL first to see if the policy has been implemented. Because I don't trust NIPOST. They fit corner the $80 for themselves.
.Why will NIPOST do that, nipost regulate Dhl activities in Nigeria and dhl fee will be more that $80

Why is NIPOST acting stupid? It is not the duty of the exporter to pay the tariffs. Other postal services are halting their parcel operations to the US but NIPOST is acting like a beaten dog.

I swear this govt is out to rip us out… now they noticed a trend in people shipping out food stuffs and other small to earn $$$ since naira isn’t looking good. Now they want a share of it but a whopping $80.
How much do they think people make from shipping small parcels of food stuffs and all..?

Thanks for posting this. Everything you said is 100% correct. The government of the day is desperately looking for money to fund their renewed "hopelessness".
I personal package sent from the US to a friend was recently charged N160k plus as customs duty. No matter how much he argued that the value is just $30, nobody listened. A package weighing less than 1kg.
Nipost is not fit for purpose and what they dont realise is that many people will simply stop using their services.

the suspension of diminmis is the reason.

It's affecting China and everyone.

sending higher package size will still fetch more than 80 USD.

I don't see why this is an issue that Nigerians should be worried about. Especially for businesses. Just add the $80 to your cost and continue your business.

The issue is, that already expensive item, becomes more expensive........

Customers would seek alternatives, thereby killing that trade or making it unsustainable.....

How is this a problem for Nigerians. An average Nigerian don't send stuff to the US regularly except they have an export business. So it's those living in the US that will bear the cost.

Eventually it becomes too expensive to purchase Nigerian products. Those Nigerians living in the US look for cheaper alternatives in the US, those Nigerian businesses selling to them lose their customers with high purchasing power. It hurts everyone, including Nigerian businesses in Nigeria.

The seller just need to add it to it.
They think say na them only can do crazy things.

the receivers will stop buying and look for American alternatives. If i used to buy an item worth 150 usd and its not 230 usd. I would rather go look for the American alternative that will probably cost 200 usd. Dey play.

How does your story change the fact that eb1lokan has made everything worse than what his 2011 expired CPC candidate left behind in 2023, eight years after he was used to make Jonathan a one term president, thereby ending 16 years of PDP privatisation and deregulation prosperity?

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.
