According to a report by Vanguard News on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, has suggested that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, may be reinstated on September 18, signaling an end to the state of emergency declared in the oil-rich state.

Wike disclosed this shortly after casting his ballot at about 11:00 a.m. in Unit 007, Ward 9, Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, during the Local Government elections organized by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The elections, which were held across 319 wards and 23 local government areas, were overshadowed by widespread reports of irregularities and low voter participation. In several urban centres, polling stations recorded very poor turnout, with many residents choosing to stay away from the process. Conversely, some rural communities witnessed relatively better participation.

Observers noted logistical challenges, including the late arrival of electoral materials and allegations that original result sheets were missing in some polling units. Critics also faulted the conduct of the polls without the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), raising questions about the credibility of the exercise.

Despite these challenges, Wike maintained that the political crisis rocking the state was gradually being resolved and that the way was now clear for stability to return. He expressed optimism that by September 18, the suspended governor would be reinstated and governance would return to normalcy.

Political analysts, however, warn that the deep-seated divisions within the state’s political structure may continue to pose challenges, even after Fubara’s reinstatement. The outcome of the local government polls and the broader handling of the Rivers political crisis are expected to play a significant role in shaping the state’s trajectory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
