Does anything stop lecturers from contesting to be a Senator? Aren't they smart enough to know these politicians have people to pay back after they are elected into office?

Do the professors pay anything back to anyone?

Is there any student that's hasn't been a victim of handout sales by these professors? Are those profits included in their income?

Not in support of senators making that much, lecturers aren't holier either

What makes it bizarre than it should be is the senators paycheck is still vague up till now. fG dey tok one lie. Senators dey tok another thing. What is the range for these bunch of waec holders that decide the administration and economy of this country? What is the range or even the figure? Why is it shrouded in mystery?

I wish these profs can stand up and say they would not be available for any inec duties but the fear is they go go hire profs the way they hired fake bishops that year. Smh

University professors rig elections for politicians then turn around to complain!

Action and consequence are equal and opposite
I think you should think of it this way:
University Professors are impoverished by politicians and are then paid hugely by the politicians to rig elections

Thats a shortsighted way to resolve a problem. All the eating of one election cannot satisfy the hunger of tomorrow

.The google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin didn't finished their Phd. They both left the program when it seems they have better opportunities then. To be sincere many who found themselves in academic are only there because there are no other choices. To be really successful and rich in life one need to find his or her own path not through paid employment.
The important thing is that they were fully qualified as at that time to get lecturing jobs especially having parent with professorship background. They did not abandoned PhD, they took leave to implement and tried their luck in what turned out as very successful venture today. Now, they are one of the first 10 richest men in the world today that don't and can't cry for salary increase anymore on yearly basis.

So, those lecturers and professors crying of increment for salary on yearly basis when we are trying to recover from effect of one should take risk like these Google guys to end poverty that make them demand for more and more on yearly basis. Many of them can't even teach well for dullest students to understand, and research they can't even do. We have nearly uncountable number of universities, but we can't see the impact of their researches being translated to practical usages. Yes, I know they will hide under financing, those who end up getting grants do end up in financial wastage to sponsorers in many cases.

When companies see prospects in your research works, you will not need to beg them to finance it before they do. And many don't even need big finance, taking parts of meager salary is enough to implement it practically and end poverty for your life time and family who will then be absent among those making yearly salary increment noises

Let our professors go and join politics and earn that too. Afterall, life is about choice. We have had professors who became a professor first and then a National Assembly member. They choose to be a professor or a politician or both.
.....my brother the thing weak me, Professor here Professor there they have not been able to make the Country prosperous, with any worthwhile invention.

Is like telling a secondary school teachers not to be available for marking WAEC or Neco? There are even more demand for INEC, they even fight for that opportunity because it is not free. It is not for all professors, if you are lucky; you even thank your star.

The poster above me has lost his senses. People they are fighting for is here supporting injustice. If the so-called Professors did not thought you well in school, will you have the gots to type in English and spell correctly? You need help. So teaching is not hustling abi?

You see why I always tell people to Japa, because when you travel and become more exposed, you'll hate Nigeria.
No, the poster above you has not lost his senses. I just think that this trend of comparing the remuneration of totally unrelated professions is as absurd as it is dishonest. Why do we choose to compare the salary of politicians to the salary of academics? Why is it that we NEVER question the salary of football players or compare same to the salary of, say, doctors? I'll tell you why: in our irrational state as humans, football players are more important to us than doctors because while footballers bring us much joy by the entertainment they provide, doctors give us no joy at all by the ailments they diagnose. The same goes for the politician and the university professor. The politician knows how to spread joy among his constituents but the professor, in some instances, is a kill joy by the manner in which he handles his students.

Furthermore, please note that it is a free world and that there is no law that bars any professor from becoming a politician or any politician from becoming a professor. So, if the professor covets the pay of the politician, let him become a politician and spare us the pity party. I can only feel for the professor if, at the time he freely and willingly made his career choice, anyone had lied to him that he would be better paid in this country than a politician.

Tell me any other sector in this country that is adequately remunerated. Why do we make it seem like academics are the only underpaid group? And by the way, the English that the poster above you wrote was not taught him by the professor who only spent four (or five) years with him. It was taught by the combined effort of the primary and secondary school teachers who spent a whopping cumulative twelve years teaching him and getting him ready for life and for university. Yet, when NUT goes on strike for poor pay, ASUU turns a blind eye to their plight. Instead, it is the association of petrol-tanker drivers that threatened to join the teachers in a solidarity strike.

Sentiments will get us nowhere. While I haven't much regard for your politicians and their brand of politicking, I have no sympathy either for your professors and their insular myopia in their self-centred quest to better their lot at the expense of everything else. Still, how is it logical that some of the best paid humans on earth are players and not workers? And, why do we never compare the pay of these entertainers to those of serious workers?

Workers must demand a pay raise if there is stagnation or no increase at all.Asking them to quit their professions for what ever reasons to penned here is just ridiculously.
Workers should demand with common sense! They should remember they were begging employers some years ago that even if the give them N30k, they will collect. Now, they they turn increment to yearly basis when the effect of one is still on ground.

hen they were created, they were not created with that profession. It was their choice to accept it to feed themselves, and if you now eyeing there professions because they get higher pay, then make another choice to walk to where you think you can get higher pay without making noise or disturb our peace.

It is never a crime to do so. Imo government that is almost ending tenure increasing salary, if they think because of that is the reason they need increase, then they should go to imo universities or politics or UK universities to try their lucks so that they can allow those over qualified tht re even ready to collect less to enter or how is that problem?

Your ilk are the reason why the crop of leaders we have always emerge. Small thong you will be screaming hustle which never transcends the realm of yahoo. But someday, after we burn this country to the ground, when everyone is a fraudster, tailor or carpenter, when all our doctors and teachers either migrate or become poultry farmers, only then will sense seep into some dumb skulls. The same China and the west that are eons eicher than you still honour education, but una think say education na trash and it is okay for the educated in society to struggle.

You tried. But your analysis is not balanced and technically supported the overblown salary of Nigerian senators.
While you stated premises for the low salary of academic professors to be interrelated with students’ tuition fees, you should have identified similar premises for the overblown salaries of Nigerian senators.

Oya, let them reduce senators' pay to 700k a month, since 500k seems so big to you.

Solidarity is only active in melody in Nigeria anyway. The song is so stale and fantasy driven than one for calls for change.

The handout exhortation nko?? During exams time, ANZ sheet nah for sell, working sheet blank A4 paper nah for sell, even those money pass they re salary self
Dvdpity:
Professors in the Nigerian university take home pay is not up to 600,000 it's around 450-534 thousand per month. Not enough to take care of transportation and fueling of vehicle, talkless of feeding the family, clothing the family, paying house rent, funding research, publishing manuscripts in reputable international journals, helping extended family members who look up for help and finally, paying medical bills, most of these professors and Nigerian lecturers are heavily suffering from different medical illnesses. Most coming from years of exposure to chemicals and others Hazard in supervising undergraduate, postgraduate and personal researches.

It's very terrible to be a lecturer in Nigeria now.

Salary was never designed to make anyone rich!

Poverty is a choice!

Middle class life is a choice!

To be rich is a choice!

Thanks you for your insightful post!

sreamsense:
It is not by force to work for government, they should vacate universities and go out to hustle to give room to those that are even ready to collect N200000. There are professors outside schools hustling for their monies, they should go to the streets or politics where they think there is money. Employer can not make you rich, they can only give you money to feed your family. If you want to become rich, go out there and hustle for your money. Even if they are paid N5,000,000 a month, In two years, they will still come back to say they need more. There are many professors, PhD outside academic environment who are employers of labour.

If the two Google guy founders that have up to PhD in Computer engineering and the other in Computer science with parent having professorship background also ended up in lecturing, they will not end up as one of the biggest employers of labour worldwide today . Is not too long that salary increase was done, and if government yields again now. NASU,SANU and many others will also come again to ask for increment. If you think you are eyeing UK money, find your way to UK to look for teaching job or take to odd jobs for survival. When you know where the money is, then use your leg to go there now, and let those that are even ready to collect N100,000 enter

Brilliant. Now, what do you now have to say about the senator own?
It is by choice, if you are interested in senatorial position and already knew there is money there that you want, then go and join politics with your even over qualified certificates, it is never a crime to do so; it is part of human hustling for better opportunity.

You will not be the first professor or PhD holders to be at senate and you will not be the last either.

No need to reduce, since you know there is money there; carry your certificate to go and join politics too, it is parts of hustling in life. It is part of laziness and selfishness for you to think others salary getting higher pay than you should be reduced because you are not getting same opportunity, instead your certificate is over qualified, go there and hustle your way to senate too
