This is the Calabar–Itu Road, the only major road connecting Akwa Ibom and Cross River State. For decades, this road existed as a single lane, carrying the weight of heavy trucks, commuters, traders, and farmers. It has always been a lifeline for millions of Nigerians in the South-South and South-East.

Years ago, the Federal Government promised something better. They flagged off a dualization project to expand and modernize the road. That promise gave people hope. But today, what do we see? Endless delays, abandoned sections, failed portions, and a road that has become a nightmare.

Everywhere you turn, there are fallen trucks blocking traffic. Vehicles get stuck for hours, sometimes days. Businesses lose money. Farmers cannot move their produce. Families are stranded. And too often, lives are lost in avoidable accidents. What should be a symbol of progress has instead become a symbol of neglect.

Now, here is the big question: if less than 100 kilometers of road cannot be completed after all these years, how many decades will it take to finish a brand-new Lagos–Calabar coastal highway that stretches over 1,000 kilometers?

The truth is clear. The Lagos–Calabar highway is being pushed for political reasons. It sounds attractive on paper, but it is not realistic when the government cannot even deliver a short, critical road like Calabar–Itu.

This is not just about bad roads—it is about failed priorities. While politics and new projects are being celebrated, the people who depend on this road are suffering every single day. And suffering in silence.

The Calabar–Itu Road does not need new promises. It needs urgent completion. It is not just an Akwa Ibom or Cross River issue—it is a national issue, because this road connects states, drives trade, and supports the economy.

We call on the Federal Government to set politics aside and prioritize the people. Complete the Calabar–Itu Road. Save lives. Protect businesses. And restore hope to Nigerians who deserve better.
