The acrimonious relationship between former presidential aide Reno Omokri and his ex-wife Tuokpe Onuwaje is negatively impacting their children, particularly their special needs son.

The pair tied the knot on June 12, 2004, and their marriage was officially dissolved by the Lagos high court on August 25, 2005, due to “irreconcilable differences”. They share three children together.

But in September 2024, Onuwaje, a school teacher, had accused Omokri of domestic violence.

She claimed she “tolerated physical abuse” in their marriage, alleging that Omokri’s assault left her with a “swollen jaw, ruptured eardrums, and weeks of pain”.


TheCable, however, contacted the legal authorities in Contra Costa County, California, United States, and obtained a letter from the Children and Family Services clearing Omokri of abuse allegations made by his ex-wife.

In the letter dated August 28, 2018, the authorities stated that they had received allegations of physical abuse by the author towards one of his children.

The family service said the allegations — which placed Reno at risk of abusing his two other children — were investigated and “closed as inconclusive”.

The agency added that Omokri’s “children reported no safety concerns” when in his care.

On Monday, Onuwaje also accused Omokri of neglecting their special needs son, claiming he has not seen the child since June 2024 while giving preferential attention to the boy’s siblings.

In a Facebook post, she challenged Omokri to move beyond “photo ops” and prioritise “real life,” urging him to spend meaningful time with their son.

“Reno Omokri Stop showing up just for photo ops—show up for real life. Our son with special needs is waiting for quality time with his dad, not just the fleeting visits you do with his siblings,” she wrote.

“You haven’t seen nor spent time with your son since June 2024! Over a year!

“Prioritize meaningful moments over social media validation. Be present, be involved, and be a constant in your children’s lives.

“Real parenting happens in the everyday moments, not just in staged photos. Put down the camera!”

However, according to the 2018 documents obtained by TheCable, while both of Omokri’s other children provided exonerating testimony, which was crucial in clearing Omokri of the abuse allegations at that time, the case was “closed as inconclusive”.

TheCable understands that owing to his son’s autism and nonverbal status, Omokri is unlikely to be alone with him since the two other children are no longer at home.

This situation creates significant legal vulnerability, as any new abuse allegations from Onuwaje would lack witness testimony to either confirm or deny the claims.
