Japa: See What This Nigerian Man Living Abroad Told Me To Rush And Do For Him. by NiceLegs(op): 1:39am On Sep 02, 2025
Hello Everyone. Something happened today and I want you all living abroad to learn from this story.

So today, I got a call from a client I have not met before. During his introduction, he said he lives in USA and that someone referred him to me. I introduced myself aswell. After a short exchange of pleasantries, he went straight to tell me he wanted to buy plots of land in Lagos state. He said wanted an area that is already fully developed. He went on to mention areas like Egbeda, Ikeja, Surulere, Maryland, Yaba, VI, Lekki Phase 1 etc.

I told him there are no available plots of lands in these areas because they are Lagos Mainland and Island areas. These areas are already fully occupied with buildings. No virgin lands here. Even if he will see, he won't be able to afford it cos they will run into hundreds of millions which I know he doesn't have. I told him I once saw a plot at Ikeja for 450m and I know he doesn't have such amount of money.

He insisted he wanted these parts of Lagos because he wants a developed area he can buy a land and start building. He said some people have been telling him to check Ibeju-Lekki areas. I told him Ibeju-Lekki areas are complete BUSHY areas and if he buys there, in the next 20years, the area would still not have developed still.

I showed him some plots I have at Ikola-Ipaja area, close to Iyana-Ipaja and he loved it so much. The price of a plot there is about 35m with CofO. He loved it together with the price which he said he was very okay with. We discussed further on them and then he told me he wants to get five plots. Two plots for him and three plots in his children's name.

He didn't say anything about wife.

I agreed but his request got me so curious so I asked him a question.

Now this is where it get interesting.

I said "Sir, you are in USA and I'm sure you are living happy there, why did you decide to start buying plots of land in Lagos. Some buy maybe 1 or 2 but you are buying 5 at once. Why?

Do u know what he said?

He paused for a long while and said this....

"You won't understand. But let me make it brief. I came to USA over 35 years ago in the year 1983 as a young man. I came here and started hustling hard. I did all kinds of jobs. I even went back to University to further my education. I was able to get a Bachelors degree. Ever since I have been in USA, I have watched Nigerians come here and return home. Some return to nothing while others return to something. I came here and spent all my years building life here but the regret I have now is, I did all that without thinking of home. Most of the Nigerians who also came to USA around the time I came in 1983 all have several plots of lands back home in Nigeria. I have NOTHING to my name. Some of them have built houses, duplexes even mansions. I have nothing. Except for the house I was able to acquire here. I recently realized my ex-wife even has 2 plots of lands in her name in Nigeria and a mighty duplex she built in Nigeria without my knowledge. She is currently living in the duplex as we speak. She got them while we were still married here in America and she never told me. After our divorce, she relocated back to Nigeria, opened a supermarket business and is living in her duplex. That was a shocker to me. As If that is not enough, 4 of my Nigerian friends who came to USA around the same time I came just told me they have so many landed properties in their names back in Nigeria. According to them, they were buying them all these years and they never told me. One is even coming back in December to dedicate his new mighty duplex which he built on one of his plots. He showed me the picture but I was angry. Yes...I was angry because these are Nigerians I called my close friends here in USA for so many years. I have been moving with them for years in USA but they never told me what they were doing yet they always ask me about mine. I'm hurt".

This man spoke for over 2 hours. I did not even know what to say.

He ended by saying...

"Any Nigerian living abroad should not make the mistake I made. Think home. Think home. Think home. Get Lands and properties back home. These are investments you are making in your name back home. Let them be appreciating while you are here hustling. Let your kids know the Assets you have for them back home. Buy as much landed properties in places that appreciates fast. Abroad is not my home and I don't plan on living here forever".
He ended by saying he will get back to me before the week runs out so we can proceed on the purchase of the plots of land.

After the conversation. I just started thinking. His story is sad because it's a mixture of betrayal from people he loves and one of regret due to lack of foresight.

This is around past 1.AM here in Nigeria and am still awake thinking about it. That's why I decided to post it here so that our brethren in Diaspora can learn one or two from this man's sad story.

May God give everybody abroad foresight so that you won't wake up in 30 years time and start regretting that you did not do what u could have done while you were still young.

The man isn't man enough, he needed someone to tell him what to do before he do it. Must his friends tell him about their landed properties in Nigeria?
Re: Japa: See What This Nigerian Man Living Abroad Told Me To Rush And Do For Him. by FunnyDude(m): 6:23am On Sep 02, 2025
Lol. That's why I read all these new japa people shouting they won't come back again to Nigeria after managing to get the visa.

You will learn that no place is like your ancestral country. Look at Akon now investing heavily in Senegal.

Abroad just like Lagos is designed for young age who can hustle and bustle because of the fast paced nature.

Travel abroad ooh have options ooh but don't forget that your country, think of your old age.

You'll never be young forever

This one is trying to promote his business.
People who are okay with this poverty-ridden country will use it to brush their ego.

Insecurity is the issues
Re: Japa: See What This Nigerian Man Living Abroad Told Me To Rush And Do For Him. by Sucre6: 8:13am On Sep 02, 2025
So he needed friends and family to nag or advice him before he makes decision ??
He ain't man enough to make his own decision ?

I see no betrayal here, his friends were busy thinking fast and making move while he was sitting pretty waiting for them to think for him.

Insecurity is the issues
Insecurity didn't start 15 to 30 years ago when his mates were buying properties. Insecurity is a recent venture that the government has decided to encourage by turning a blind eye and giving audio reports on successes against insurgents.

There are different sets of Japa people.
Some japa and still carry their African identity with them.
Some japa and they want to forget they were born in this part of the world.

I can relate to his story very well. This place ehnnn there are a lot of nasty people. Those people he thought were his friends are not, why because they are Luke friends you make in prison...born out of necessity to survive, once they are no longer in that confined space, they realize they have nothing in common and the friendship dies.

Also that wife's behaviour is quite common.
Women secretly competing with their husbands. I think the system makes people callous and treacherous.

He should thank God he still has the means to redeem his self. Nobody send anybody for here ooo. Everything is transactional. No love on the streets.

Which Ibejulekki is bushy and won't be developed in the next 20yrs?

And someone like you calls yourself a realtor.

Even at Ibejulekki current state, it's still more valuable with higher potential than Iyana Ipaja and the environs.

The latter can no longer grow in proportion worth attracting anything worthwhile both from the government and private sectors.
Re: Japa: See What This Nigerian Man Living Abroad Told Me To Rush And Do For Him. by Zanzibar1: 2:59pm On Sep 02, 2025
it cost $427,179 to $500,000 to buy a moderate house in the United States. If he can afford that then he wouldn't need to buy any properties here in Nigeria.
I wouldn't want my kids to grow in Nigeria if i am lucky enough achieve it.

But on another thought, $500,000 will buy lands and build a alot of solid properties here in Nigeria. But what exactly are you coming back to in Nigeria? I think that's the most important question.

Gbam . Well said....
The kind of wickedness I see in ppl, I wonder what changed as soon as they landed abroad. Ppl lose their conscience and all that matters is what they can get no matter if anyone or ppl get hurt...
I have come to the conclusion that they were inherently evil even in naija but hardship or condition didn't allow them show their real colors...

The Nigerian patter is that we are worshippers of mammon. If the individual you are dealing with has no money to give you, the person is treated like trash and whenever the person giving them money no longer has to give, all the double respect and honor ends right there and he will be laughed and scorned.

There's nothing to regret at all as long as he has money. He can even acquire more landed properties that's better than their own.

Many Americans will never actually pay off their house. And in retirement, some find they have to downsize because their retirement income isn't enough to maintain that. And Nigerians in America are living check to check just like them. However, if they invest even a fraction of their money in Nigeria, they can basically build their own town. And in Nigeria they would own it all 100%, no debt.

Even if you never plan to return, why not leave something to your kid besides well wishes and a crumbling, overpriced house likely in the middle of nowhere. In Nigeria, they can have tons of businesses and property generating so much income, they can live like royalty at home, or comfortably abroad.
